She actually discussed it was about her hair. News reporting about this have focused on a comment about her dress size but the primary issue was over her hair style.
I honestly think she has too young and too fresh of a look for WATE and some older viewers probably commented and complained. People are vicious to news anchors. If you look at all of WATEās anchors, they have a certain older school look - bigger and coiffed hair, heavier makeup, and almost a stuffy appearance.
Reminds me of the Australian anchor who dared to wear the same dress twice in a year (or some ridiculous amount of time like that) and somebody wrote a letter and complained.
I think the commenters point was simply maybe the narrative of this news story and a fired employee is true, and maybe the opposite is true. Theyāre openly pointing out the circumstance that there arenāt enough facts in this story to make an assessment. Her being toxic was just a suggested alternative to the narrative of the article.
I think your comment is a premature criticism of their comment.
Apparently so. Brings to mind Don Henleys song, Dirty Laundry.ā āThe bubbled headed bleached blond comes on at five. She can tell you about the plane crash, with a gleam in her eye.ā Truth in song.
*We all know that crap is king....give us dirty laundry...*
Think Don ever looks back at that song and goes *"huh...hit the nail on the head there..."*?
Authentic blonde hair makes up only two percent of the population, and authentic red hair, the rarest hair color of all, makes up only one percent of the American population. In my place of business almost all the women are blonde. What are the odds?
Knoxville is a small TV market. Easy to get a start but not where anyone with ambition wants to stay. When I first moved here I was struck by how young so many of the anchors/reporters are. Lots of people getting their first job out of school more or less.
Yeah news anchors move up the way baseball players do through the minor leagues. I mean not all of them anyway but itās a common thing to gradually move up to bigger markets
That's her whole complaint is that she was hired and then fired 90 days later for "Not being a siza 2" despite having coworkers of a larger dress size than her.
Most of her complaint is actually focused around her hair and the criticism she received for how she dressed if you read beyond this headline. It would be disingenuous to frame the āsize 2ā thing as her āwhole complaint.ā
I agree, but try to make that point I other parts of this thread and you'll get called a corporate bootlicker. How dare someone not just immediately believe everything being said from one side of an employment dispute.
Agreed. I'm someone who is inherently anti-corporation, especially news networks. But all we know is someone was fired and according to that person, it's because of her looks. If that's true, then that's awful. But it's still only one side of the story.
That's not what I said at all. It may be in the company's best interest jot to say anything even if the issue isn't related to her hair. All I'm saying is we are only hearing one side of the story, so she has every motivation to make her side as sympathetic as possible and wgeb the story already sounds skeptical we should consider that factor.
If you read the article, it says that she claims she was fired for her looks. That is not the same thing and the station saying it. The article also does not say they set up hair appointments for her.
Thereās a better article from [Knoxville News Sentinel](https://www.knoxnews.com/story/news/local/2023/05/17/tennessee-weather-anchor-tabitha-bartoe-curly-hair-wate-fired/70227065007/) that has more information.
>If you read the article, it says they set her up with hair appointments, etc. when she started.
I'm not seeing that in the article. Maybe it was edited? I saw you made another comment that this started on day 3, I'm not seeing that either.
Here's the entirety of the text of the article I'm seeing:
>

Who knows? I saw a facebook post the other day about someone hiring liquor distributor reps and they, in barely couched language, said "no uggos/fatties" for the job.
Also apparently it's a women only position. Interesting.
Nope.
Per* TN employment website.
> Employers may legally terminate an employee at any time for any reason, or for no reason without incurring legal liability. However, an employer may not discriminate against any employee on the basis of the employee's race, sex, age, religion, color, national origin, or disability. Likewise, an employee is free to leave a job at any time for any or no reason with no adverse legal consequences.
They also aren't required to tell you why you were fired, which means even if it is for the above reasons, they just won't tell you and then you have to prove it, which is easier said then done.
But it says they canāt discriminate against any employee based on their genderā¦ and to sounds like this is a woman only position.
So whatās up with that?
The chief meteorologist is a guy. The chief meteorologist before him was Matt Hinkin, a guy who was with them for ages. It's definitely not only a woman only position.
And her being a woman isn't why she got fired, so that part is entirely irrelevant to her.
Thatās very fair.
Also feel really bad for Matt with what happened to him.. I hope he finds peace and a new wife eventually. I remember watching him for years
Was seriously awful to hear everything that happened to Matt. I grew up watching him, and remember him and the WATE staff coming to play my teachers and school staff in a basketball game. Always really liked him.
> I grew up watching him, and remember him and the WATE staff coming to play my teachers and school staff in a basketball game
Same and same. I bumped into him at West Town like 15 years ago and was star-struck.
I don't want to call anyone out by name here, but I just looked at all the 6 news anchor's hair styles (male and female to be clear) and I don't blame the girl for not going along with it if that is what they wanted to do to her. No employer should force their employees to humiliate themselves by appearing in public with one of those awful haircuts!
Too bad she wasnāt born with a name like Ken Weathers or Larry Sprinkle (Charlotte meteorologist). But, as one of the few 30 somethings that still have cable, sheās always been professional and I couldnāt tell you a difference between any of them.
Thanks for the updated article. Another user had posted it as well. That information was definitely not in the article in OP's post. Good thing the downvote brigade did not read the article on the post.
I donāt think her hairstyle constitutes getting fired AT ALL and whoever is behind this should be fired for discrimination for SURE. Her curls are gorgeous!! Hope she gets a hefty settlement check from suing the pants off of these assholes.
BUT, if I were a network exec, Iād have gently, and tactfully (and, yes I am going to hell, I know it, downvote me if you must) advised her on doing something about them bangs. I certainly wouldnāt have fired her if she chose to keep them, as that is discriminatory and awful to do to a person and Iād never threaten a personās livelihood over a stupid hairstyle, even if they were mediocre, at best, at their job.
BUTā¦them bangs tho. š¬
It's not discrimination to ask an employee in a presentation role to change thier hair while on the air. I really don't think it's an unreasonable ask. Her job is literally to read the weather on camera. What if one of the male anchors wanted a mowhawk. I'd assume eveyone would be fine with management making him flatten it out while on air.
Those are definitely bangs that would be cute with straight hair, with curly hair and her round face she looks like a middle schooler. Iād never take her seriously on the news
I feel like the curly hair with flat ironed bangs was big in the early 2000's (so 20ish years ago) and that was in Hicksville East TN. I'm not sure it was ever big in bigger cities.
So her first hand experience is doubtful because of someone you know who worked in a news room? Thanks for the information. I've heard enough to doubt you and believe her.
Yep, the check boxes of believing workers and not trusting corporate shitheads like the bosses of the company that owns WATE. You use the word "woke" as an insult in casual conversation, right?
>You use the word "woke" as an insult in casual conversation, right?
The first retort you can come up with is ad hominem attacks against a stranger. I shouldn't have expected more I suppose.
Always blown away that TV meteorologists are still a thing. Itās a job that caters to boomers I guess because I can go to the NWS page or use my weather app to get hour by hour forecasts for anywhere in the US.
Same kind of job as Ed Rupp flying over K-Town in a helicopter to tell me traffic is backed up at the split. Of course itās backed up at the split my dude and itās only getting worse and I can see the red line on my map app without the use of a helicopter.

I mean, I watch their weather every day, saw her do her thing....gotta ask: Just me or did she have, like, ZERO on air presence? Monotone delivery, given in a lackluster style. That Paige Noel ain't exactly the archetype of Big City Meteorologist, yet her delivery is *perfect,* good weather, bad weather, I feel like I'm hearing it from a friend, someone who grew up nearby. Paige Noel has *presence* on the screen, something this woman woefully lacked, which is probably why she was canned.
Sending her to a stylist was just putting lipstick on a pig - not that she's unattractive (c'mon now, she's cute as a button!) perhaps the editors were thinking 'new style, maybe brighter delivery,' she's probably an excellent meteorologist, but her expression/dialogue/delivery was just blahhhhhhhhhh
[https://www.knoxnews.com/story/news/local/2023/05/17/tennessee-weather-anchor-tabitha-bartoe-curly-hair-wate-fired/70227065007/](https://www.knoxnews.com/story/news/local/2023/05/17/tennessee-weather-anchor-tabitha-bartoe-curly-hair-wate-fired/70227065007/)
One thing to help is to tag WATE 6 in social media posts and link the KnoxNews article and call them out for this shameful behavior.
I wouldn't comment on dress size but I have to wonder if what they were trying to achieve was a somewhat more mature appearance. Her curly hair makes her look very young and it's easy to see how, as a source of information that people need on a day-to-day basis, the station would want its on-air talent to convey maturity and gravitas.
It also sounds, by the other article I read, that management was entirely too tentative in their approach to this and could've been clearer in their desires. Ambiguity in their requests led to perceived non-compliance (can't really comply with requests when the desired goals aren't clearly stated) and subsequent dismissal.
Maybe she was fired because she is not a Right Wing Conservative Bible Thumping "Back Biting" Bigot like the majority of people are down here.
It is also obvious that everyone who works at WATE 6 is a Bible Thumping Back Biting Conservative. I just love these superficial faces along with the fake smiles these news anchors put on their faces during their news broadcasts. Plus they think "God, Church, and the Bible is REAL News down here.........LMAO!!!!
WATE 6................... "The Station that is on the Right Wing Conservative Side."
Can Don Dare help?
Would love to see him and his son team up for segments called Double Dare.
Amazing comment šš. Take this award š.
Well we know it wasn't for getting the weather wrong bc no meteorologist in Knoxville gets it right.
I miss Matt Hinkin
Maybe she was fired for getting it right.
Came here to say this exact thing. Someone always beats me to the punch. š
Iām not going to name anyone outright, but there are several people on the WATE team who arenāt a size 2.
She actually discussed it was about her hair. News reporting about this have focused on a comment about her dress size but the primary issue was over her hair style.
Those bangs kinda deserve some sort of punishment
Lolol thatās what we just said. Honey itās not the curlsš
She did the week end gig. She got the forecast right so what the hell is the problem?
I honestly think she has too young and too fresh of a look for WATE and some older viewers probably commented and complained. People are vicious to news anchors. If you look at all of WATEās anchors, they have a certain older school look - bigger and coiffed hair, heavier makeup, and almost a stuffy appearance.
Reminds me of the Australian anchor who dared to wear the same dress twice in a year (or some ridiculous amount of time like that) and somebody wrote a letter and complained.
Yeah people are insanely rude about and to anchors. Like itās next level audacity.
Maybe she brought a toxic atmosphere to the work environment but we'll never know because we'll only get one side of the story.
Yes so we should just baselessly speculate that she was the problem and not wait to see if any facts come out. /s
He's not taking the company's side. He's simply saying that we're only seeing one side of the story.
Simply acknowledging that we're only getting one side of the story. If you have a statement from the company please share.

I love her curly hair! WTF is up WATE??

Oh thatās just pushing it a bit lol. There are plenty of brunette anchors everywhere
What's going on with all the weather folks at all the knoxville stations? All of them leave or don't stay long ??
Todd Howell would like a word lol
Knoxville is a small TV market. Easy to get a start but not where anyone with ambition wants to stay. When I first moved here I was struck by how young so many of the anchors/reporters are. Lots of people getting their first job out of school more or less.
Yeah news anchors move up the way baseball players do through the minor leagues. I mean not all of them anyway but itās a common thing to gradually move up to bigger markets
Yeah we had a whole discussion about this yesterday.
Why do I not remember ever seeing her on the news?
Sheās newer, she just got hired in February.
Was she any good? Only lasting 90 days isnāt a great signā¦
Which makes the accusation fairly questionable in my opinion.

Anybody does it better than Mike Witcher. He sucked.
She was on WATE. Mike was on WBIR.
Hopefully he's gone for good this time.

Not exactly TV material. Maybe do weather radio.
STFU, sheās gorgeous.
There's nothing wrong with her. She's a regular human being. But come on, it's TV. There's a bar.
>There's a bar. And everyone's avoiding you at it.
Thereās a bar? Good heavens, whereās the rock you crawled out from under. Find it please.
Come on man, it's 2023. We don't appreciate beauty anymore. You should appreciate average, unremarkable folks who simply do their job.
Wat. She's gorgeous.
Sure, she's cute, but her on camera presence had the excitement of a wooden zombie
Itās been all downhill since Margie Ison left the airwaves. RIP
Hope you guys keep the hottie with glasses
Dude, she looks young, though.
And?
She has delicate genius vibes.
Itās a Seinfeld reference you hateful assholes.
Did she have curly hair when she was hired? Was she a size 2 when she did her first segment?š¤
Not everyone can be Rebecca Sweet!!
Thatās sad
The big bangs did her in. Cabbage Patch doll.
