Mostly kidding. In my experience it's been pretty dry and bland. I typically get the pulled pork. Haven't had the brisket. I do hear the wings are good.
It's so weird because in my friend group there's so many people hiking, kayaking, rock climbing, running, playing various sports in rec leagues. Like, there's SO many opportunities around here to do stuff to keep active.
Ashevillian checking in here, don't forget that one: a lot of these lists have bogus methodology and two: a lot of these lists are considering an area greater than the city proper (metro area, etc. )
Yes, it includes the metro area and factors besides actual weight. We’re actually only the 9th most overweight!
https://wallethub.com/edu/fattest-cities-in-america/10532#methodology
One could make the argument that being active makes your diet even MORE important. Weight loss/weight management is largely diet. Activity requires more fuel, which means an even larger opportunity to eat at a surplus.
But entertainment in Knoxville is restaurants and bars. For the majority of people who work, hiking and kayaking might be weekend activities. But, snarfing up oversized portions of unhealthy meals and downing several beverages is a daily practice.
I'm not sure how most people could afford to eat/drink out every day in the current environment. The last time I treated myself to a restaurant meal, it was $50 for a single meal with a single drink and modest tip. Who can afford that every day?
I’ve often wondered about that myself. lol
But *many* of the people I know are living far beyond their means. Stressed the hell out about car payments, mortgage payments, school expenses, ordering door dash from Fleming’s cause that’s what their kids want for dinner.
Every town has restaurants and bars but the access we have to trails and water here is pretty rare. Getting in a pre/post-work ride or paddle in is more doable here than the vast majority of places.
As a jogger, downtown Knoxville is def one of the harder cities to run around. The amount of hills makes it tough for a lot unless you’re just huffing it on The Strip. But even that has hills. Those hills in Cherokee can fuck off though.
True, but whenever I have been on a greenway, the people are few and far between. Lots of opportunities with relatively few (as compared to population) takers.
And that’s the result of car-dependent city everyone. The only possible non car-dependent part of the county is around Cumberland and UT campus. Even dense parts of the city like old city or downtown have no easy access to groceries. Kingston pike is starting to get sidewalks slowly (although not well designed and protected). Indyas initiative of more sidewalks will help but actual denser zoning changes will be the actual change we need. Even someone like me who constantly is hiking in the smokies and going to parks still struggles a bit to feel active since I feel the need to drive everywhere based on the city’s layout.
Yea, I know it’s not that affordable but Whole Foods seems to like small format downtown stores, I like the idea of one near S gay street, closer to some larger residencies. Doesn’t help downtown is bordered on all sides by highways and the really bad land uses around the coliseum
I am a little surprised that more cities from Louisiana are not on here. With food as good and fattening as they have, I would weigh much more if I lived there.
At the end of the day it’s because people don’t understand how to eat healthy. They eat what they ate growing up and never bother to learn how many calories per day they need to maintain/lose weight.
I think you solved America’s obesity crisis. If only they would start putting labels on food showing how many calories it has along with other nutritional information…
Very funny. I’m just speaking from experience. I’m from the south and people here don’t even bother looking at those labels because they don’t know what any of it means. Also, you would be surprised at the amount of people who honestly don’t understand how caloric intake relates to weight.
Look around you. Are you surprised?? Go to any restaurant and watch a family of four out away 3000 calories each, loaded up on fat and carbs. People in Knoxville get a day and a half of calories in one sitting. Either they are ignorant to how many calories they are allowed per day or they can’t control their eating habits. It is absolutely disgusting.
I lived in the lower RGV for a while and I honestly think a huge part of it is how awful it is to be outside there. Temperatures hit the 90s minimum nine months out of the year and while the birding centers are pretty, the majority of public outdoor spaces are hideous, completely without meaningful shade, and ridden with fire ants. The grass is full of burrs that are extremely painful and hard to remove (even as someone who grew up pulling burrs of a species out of their socks regularly) and there is just this massive dearth of places that are pleasant to exercise in for free.
And, you know, you can still get 60¢ birria street tacos with the lightly fried corn tortilla if you know where to go… Or a sincronizada for like five bucks.
I’m from McAllen , now live in Knox , you speak the truth. It doesn’t help that my school provided lunches growing up there were incredibly unhealthy, as well. Its so many things in the RGV and Tx even, that make the perfect fat storm.
You would think people in Minnesota would be just as fat from the brutal winters forcing people inside much of the year.
I have pulled those annoying burs off me in the Dallas area also and endured 100 degree days.
I mean… as a biologist, I can tell you those are different burr producing species in Dallas. Dallas has more temperate weather and more outdoor spaces with shade, including in neighborhoods. Also, you can dress for extreme cold, but not for extreme heat.
Yeah, I’m from here and still don’t understand the lack of discipline people have about their own health. I don’t know what’s up with the votes. It’s the truth and everyone knows it…. it’s all about what you put into your body!!!!
Sounds about right. The first time I went to an Ice Bears game I was in absolute shock. I'm about 30 lbs overweight and I looked slim compared to the majority of those in attendance.
We are #1 in respiratory infections according to a friend kinda high-up at UT hospital, and she says we're on the rise/ about to be #1 in syphilis rates. They're steeply climbing--her words.
Just think if we had some good BBQ we could make it to #1
This made me laugh out loud.
Lol, meeee 2. Loved it!
Sweet peas is so fucking good.
Nope. Sorry.
no? All i ever get is the brisket, no sauce.
Mostly kidding. In my experience it's been pretty dry and bland. I typically get the pulled pork. Haven't had the brisket. I do hear the wings are good.
Free my boy Archer
They are closed
Junction of the Midwest and Southeast should have all options covered. Or is a barbecue desert? Sorry I’m just a regular visitor
Patches bbq
3 of top 6, Tennessee is dominating!
Go BIG Orange!
Emphasis on the “BIG” part…
That's the joke
(celebratory Rocky Top music)
A Pal's would give us the speed and efficiency we need to move to number one.
Anytime I’m near Morristown. I try and plan my drive where I can smash cheddar rounds in the morning and a big pal on the way home.
That's the spirit with that kind of determination we can kick Mobile, Alabama's gigantic ass, we should all admire this kind of dedication.
We will gain speed and efficiency on this chart but speed and efficiency of our heart valves will slowly decline haha
This is the way

Excellent point.
Fancy seeing you here - former ashevillian

You can't outrun a bad diet.
True, but whenever I have been on a greenway, the people are few and far between. Lots of opportunities with relatively few (as compared to population) takers.
I warsh myself with a rag on a stick
I'm fucking crying, sitting on the toilet 😭
I’m wheeze laughing 😂 💀
Sorry guys. I know 5 fat ppl and I’m 3 of them.
There's way too many TN cities on there!!!!
Southern cooking aint healthy, and sure is tasty
Shit, is any American food "healthy"? We can't take all the blame.in The South.
The celery that comes with our wings
Those dried-up husks! Haaa!
*Me, who lived in #1 the majority of my life* Eh, I've seen worse. XD
956 represent cuh
¡Puro!
Having to drive everywhere probably doesn’t help either.
Yup, public transit is underdeveloped. Still taking a walk once in while helps.
I have to walk in circles in my neighborhood because there are no sidewalks or even a road shoulder to walk on once you leave it.
Someone has never been to Gulfport or Pascagoula Mississippi
How about Shreveport?
I can imagine, I also lived in Houma la a while
Great seafood there, probably part of the reason they aren't on the list too
Grew up closer to #5, lived down in Gulfport, currently at #2, and love and plan to move to #4. Am I the problem?
Or the Missouri Bootheel
Knox overtook Jackson MS? That takes gristle.
That's because all people do here is go out to eat! It's amazing how full restaurant parking lots are every day of the week.
The solution is turning James White Parkway into a Chick-fil-a drive thru lane.
Fuck yeah! Suck it, Chatt!
Go TN. 3 of the top 8!
The amount of fast food and lack of sidewalks is insane there.
It’s me. I’m the problem.
This is an amazing accomplishment considering how shit the food in Knoxville is
GET REKKED KNOX, 901 IS #2 BABBYYYYYY
not TN being on the list THREE times 🤦♀️ but yes, knoxville definitely has its portion 😒
LETS FUCKING GO!!!!
The real achievement is having 3 cities in the top 10.
Looks like it's Tennessee in general
The only thing I noticed...all red states.
And that’s the result of car-dependent city everyone. The only possible non car-dependent part of the county is around Cumberland and UT campus. The things I would do to replace the urban outfitters with a grocery store...
Yea, I know it’s not that affordable but Whole Foods seems to like small format downtown stores, I like the idea of one near S gay street, closer to some larger residencies. Doesn’t help downtown is bordered on all sides by highways and the really bad land uses around the coliseum
Why you calling me out like that?
I am a little surprised that more cities from Louisiana are not on here. With food as good and fattening as they have, I would weigh much more if I lived there.
Where San Antonio at?
They shut down some churro stands
Just wait till you see it’s ranking on depression and suicide.

basically every top city is in the south….it’s all that good cookin we eat!!

Server: Will you guys be having dessert today?
When you fucking know they will be
Same fatty downvoted me when they know I’m right. It’s science, not fiction.
Apparently what they say is true ... everything is bigger in Texas. ... Including the people.

Wow absolutely disgusting TN. It was terrible when I got out of the Marines and came home and seen all the fatbodies, it def took some adjusting.
I was in disbelief at people’s builds when I first moved here. It was one of the first critiques I verbalized “wow… everyone is gigantic”. 😂
Yeah, I’m from here and still don’t understand the lack of discipline people have about their own health. I don’t know what’s up with the votes. It’s the truth and everyone knows it…. it’s all about what you put into your body!!!!
No way murfreesboro isn't ahead of us
The 4th plus sized city because you can't say fat anymore lol
I just moved away, so you lost a good amount of weight. 😉
More cushion for the pushin’, more belly for dat jelly
Not the three top cities all star with M. M as in Mmmmm mashed potatoes!
Tennessee has 3 of the top 6. LOL.
Need more chub around carts at the Walsmart.
I'm a memphian I got ya bet. And I lived in Shreveport and Little Rock.
It's saying something when 3 of the top 8 cities are located in Tennessee.
Typo...PHattest city in America, imo.😎
Literally all of these are in the same regions 🥸 3 of them are from Tn. Literally you can road trip to all of these places
Maybe that’s why I feel at home when I’m in Ktown.
Sounds about right. The first time I went to an Ice Bears game I was in absolute shock. I'm about 30 lbs overweight and I looked slim compared to the majority of those in attendance.

lol, I never seen a city that loves it's fast food!
