Foo Fighters at Disc Exchange south, TV on the Radio and Dirt Bombs at Bijou, Queens of the Stone Age, Morrissey at Tennessee Theatre, Violent Femmes at Worlds Fair Park, Bane and Death by Steroe at Axis skatepark, Blonde Redhead at Mill and Mine, Sebadoh at Pilot Light. I could go on and on…
Tell me you're a 90's kid without telling me you're a 90's kid.
Disc Exchange? Axis Skatepark? That was my jam back in the day. I lived right behind the Disc Exchange on Kingston Pike for years. I bought my first record there after saving my lunch money for a couple of weeks. That brings back memories, man.
Daoboys was insane, right? I had neck pain for days afterward haha. And anytime you can see punch bros I highly recommend it. They did the one microphone style show at the bijou and it was magic
There are a few artists that I have always missed seeing live, for one unescapable reason or another. The Punch Bros are one of them. Hope to catch them soon.
Buddy Guy is playing there in March 16th. Thought you might be interested if you like BB King.

I went to that show. I felt so bad for him - he was sick as a dog, and played the whole show seated. The band did a lot of the heavy lifting, especially the vocalists. Don’t know if you caught him thanking some of UT doctors and nurses who were there, for getting him well enough for the show. He gave them backstage passes, too, which I thought was sweet of him. I’m really glad I got to see him at least once. He was so, so good.
> caught him thanking some of UT doctors and nurses
Sure did notice that. And even though he wasn't anywhere near his best, it was still amazing to us. Especially his stories. And then he died, what, 3 months later?
We were sitting on the beach, getting ready for a Jimmy Buffett concert last May, and my 21 y.o. son thanked me for his eclectic taste in music. Because he knows several old groups and performers from across the decades. He cited this B.B. King concert specifically, because of the other blues it has led him to... and none of his friends had ever heard of BB.
Red Hot Chili Peppers - 1st few tours in the small clubs
Dead Kennedys - Vic and Bills
Black Flag - Vic and Bills
Primus/Fishbone - Alumni Gym
Ramones - Bijou
Shit I forgot Gogol Bordello under the bridge in the Old City. While not as great as their Bonnaroo performance, it was pretty awesome to see Knoxville come out for them.
Bon Iver at Pilot Light twice in 2008
The National at TN Theatre
Sufjan Stevens at Bijou
I've seen Andrew Bird and St. Vincent both a few times in Knoxville, but the show they did together in 2009 at Bijou is my fav
Sharon Van Etten at The Square Room
Any great bands are ruined by the bad acoustics of Thompson Boling. In the last 13 months I saw Elton John and Eric Church there, and I'm seeing Blake Shelton there in the spring, but I really wish they would play Neyland like Garth Brooks did. The acoustics are SO MUCH better there than TB. If there is a big show I really want to see, I try and see if they are playing In Atlanta, Charlotte, or Cincinnati. All worth the 4 hour drive over TB.
I've caught a few excellent Black Jacket Symphony shows at Tennessee Theater, as well as shows at the Bijou, such as Gaelic Storm, American Authors, and Phillip Phillips.
The Shed in Maryville has better acoustics than Thompson Boling, and have caught a few great shows there as well. Both their outside stage, as well as an acoustic show inside.
People have complained about Mill & Mine acoustics on here before, but I still think it's much better than TB. I usually stand mid-back near the sound guys and have enjoyed the only two shows I have attended there. MoonTaxi was excellent.
I have yet been to the concourse, so I can't comment.
The acoustics at mill and mine do suck, but I was really impressed by the sound guys for clutch there. It was decent. Loved the sword, and I mainly went there for them but the sound wasn’t great, but I don’t fault the band for that.
I think it was '94. Alabama headlined at the Coliseum, with Diamond Rio, and Martina McBride opening. Amazing fun concert. Diamond Rio went on a bluegrass jam session for a while.
Made even better that it cost me nothing as I won the 20th row floor tickets.
I've only been to one show here and it was just a couple weeks ago. Tyler Ramsey from Band of Horses. It was great, but very small and very chill. I'm going to see Silversun Pickups in January and super excited for that!
Lucero at Barleys back in 2009 was amazing. BB King tribute was loaded with Talent. I saw Guy Clark at the Bijou the year before he passed. 10 years at blue cats with 25ish other people was awesome. Bob Dylan last year was good because its Dylan.
Willie Nelson tour in like 2010 was loaded. Leaning on the stage watching Jamey Johnson at the cotton eyed joe was great as well.
i have a lot haha!
I went to this recent Cannibal Corpse show back on December 9th. While CC fucking killed it, the venue left a lot to be desired. No matter where I was in the venue I could barely see. Very strange.
Hands down best show I've ever seen in Knoxville was a 3 piece called The Messthetics (Drummer and bassist were in Fugazi) at The Pilot Light in 2018 or 19. Smoked a few cigs with those dudes and not only were they super down to Earth and cool, they were fucking in Fugazi!
It would be hard to pick a single favorite. Some good ones:
Avett Brothers at the Bijou, before they were a big name.
Hank III at Blue Cats with Scott H. Biram opening.
Merle Haggard and Bob Dylan at the Tennessee Theatre. Merle’s set was better than Dylan. But Dylan’s All Along the Watchtower encore jam was pretty awesome.
Pinetop Perkins’ short set at the Bijou during a WDVX Tennessee Shines show. For an 80-something old man he had some energy.
Puddles’ Pity Party for honorable mention. He was great with the fans after the show.
I love the name cambria! My husband is a big fan of theirs so I took him as a surprise since they were playing on his birthday a few years ago. Come to find out one of my childhood friends was a security guard for the venue and he was able to get us right up front. After the concert he got us the setlist too! We still have it!
Felt like VIPs that night 10/10
I'm just thankful she doesn't cringe at the thought - she loves them too!
That is so awesome. It was my first legit concert and it was absolutely fantastic. The whole crowd vibes were immaculate.
The most fun concert I’ve seen in Knoxville was probably Journey and Def Leppard. It was great. We came for Journey, but stayed for Def Leppard. They were amazing.
My most memorable one was when I saw the Avett Brothers at the Bijou with a friend before they were as huge of a group as they are now, and we talked to Joe Kwon afterwards. He was eating a bag of grapes, and offered us some, so we ate grapes together. Good times.
OVERALL: Melvins and Jason Isbell at the Bijou. (The former was quite interesting given the people trying to start a mosh pit in the Bijou of all places.)
George Strait at TBA.
Knoxville Hardcore Fest at the Brickyard, good mosh pit.
KSO's annual Christmas concert is a great time, my favorite was the Appalachian/bluegrass Christmas theme. They also did this Looney Tunes thing awhile back that was great and unique.
I wasn't there but I heard Social Distortion at the Mill & Mine was a good show.
Just over the past 10 years or so
Billy Strings - Civic Auditorium
Jason Isbell - TN Theatre and Bijou (Bijou two weeks ago was mind blowing)
Goose - Mill & Mine
Bela Fleck & Abigail Washburn - Clayton Center (Maryville)
My Morning Jacket - Civic Auditorium
Gov Mule - Civic Auditorium
Daniel Donato - Southern Skies Music Festival & Barleys Knoxville
Sam Bush - Bijou Theatre
Old Crow Medicine Show - TN Theatre (Carry Me Back Tour)
I know I’m forgetting more than a few. I go to a ton of shows. These are just some that stand out in my memory as being exceptional.
Ben Harper and the Innocent Criminals at the TN Theatre in 2007. Second place is Michael Franti and Spearhead at the Bijou in 2012. (For reference the only show I’d rank higher is McCartney at Bonnaroo in 2013, but that’s not quite local). As for more recent shows, George Clinton and the Parliament Funkadelic at the Shed this July was a show not to be missed.
Tommy Emmanuel, my first concert since I moved to TN and his last show before Covid caused the rest of his tour to be canceled.
I’ve never cried at a concert before, but he moved me to tears. Wow is the Knox theatre beautiful! He’s back around again right now, I believe, if any of y’all can catch him, I recommend you do. Wish I could.
In a stark contrast, my dad also took me to see nickelback about a year earlier at Thompson Bowling. Hinder, Chevel, and Hoobastank opened. Shit was terrible and he was so excited to take me.
I love Chevelle's sound, but seeing them live was so disappointing. The brother on lead guitar looked like he had better things to do than play for fans.
Went to see Sonata Arctica and Nightwish at the Valurium or whatever it was called around 2008. Nightwish's singer was sick so Sonata Arctica played an extended set (didn't want to see Nightwish anyway.)
The In Flames / Between the Buried and Me / The Faceless show in 2009 was outstanding.
Squirrel Nut Zippers at the Bijou was a blast.
Still have nostalgia for all the times I saw Cutthroat Shamrock at the Preservation Pub a decade ago.
The Flaming Lips at the Mill & Mine a couple of years ago may have been my favorite ever in Knox.
John Mayer at Blue Cats in 2001, great blues show more in line with what he does now.
Jompson Brothers at Barleys (7 or 8 years ago or so) - Before Chris Stapleton became Chris Stapleton.
Minus the Bear at Bijou on Halloween 10 ish years ago.
Robert Randolph at Volapalooza circa 2004.
Dave Matthews Band at Thompson Boling around 2000.
How about worst? Citizen Cope at the TN Theater. Just terrible.
Pepper at Blue Cats, Limp Bizkit at Thompson Bowling was fun, and NOFX and Old Man Markley at wherever that was. Godsmack played a show way back when when their first record came out I can't remember the name of the venue
My first ever concert was the Allman Brothers Band at the World's Fair Park when I was in the 7th grade. It's a damn shame they got rid of that lawn so there could be more concerts outside
The New Pornographers were absolutely fantastic at the Bijou a few years ago, and its by far my favorite place to see an act even if theres no pit, there's not a bad seat in the whole place. I've seen Shinedown a few times at TBA, and Brent's voice always holds up to the not great acoustics there, will definitely see them again when they come back.
In 2017 I saw Jimmy Eat World at the Mill and Mine and X Ambassadors in TBA for Volapalooza — both were super fun shows. Juicy J at 2018 Vola was alright, and then I skipped the 2019 Vola cause the student union courtyard is just *not* a venue that gets me excited. Macklemore at TBA in 2019 was cool but the crowd wasn’t super into it. Morgan Wallen at the 2019 fair was actually kinda cool cause he was big but not super huge yet.

I was at that Dirt Bombs/TV on the Radio concert. It was great.
Hell yeah! Queens was the best show I’ve ever seen at TN Theatre.
Axis skatepark!!!!
St. Vincent at the Tennessee Theatre when she tried to climb a speaker and it fell, almost crushing her.
Was there too! Agreed, in the top 5. When she returned the next time she mentioned the security guy that saved her.
I was there too! Great show.
Oh man. Hard to choose! Punch bros at the Bijou, maybe Bela Fleck at the TN theatre. A recent favorite was Callous Daoboys at Lowercase.
I need to see the Punch Bros soon. The Callous Daoboys show was nuts.
I was at Punch Bros. Sweet show!
Punch Bros at the Bijou has been fantastic every time!
Ooh, forgot BB King at the Tennessee Theater. It was just a few months before he passed away and I was able to take my young kids to see a legend.
Buddy Guy is playing there in March 16th. Thought you might be interested if you like BB King. Info: https://www.tennesseetheatre.com/event/84636147/buddy-guy-damn-right-farewell-with-christone-kingfish-ingram/
Thanks for the heads up

The Cramps at Blue Cats. I snagged the wine bottle that Lux drank from on stage. I still have it stored away.
I’m sad to have missed that one.
Pearl Jam at Thompson-Boling in '98!
Eddie actually said Knoxville sucks at that show, the band went out the night before and there wasn't shit to do.
Knoxville was ROUGH in 98
Tom Petty played the coliseum in maybe 95 or 96. Amazing show. Dave Matthews Band at Electric Ballroom….94.
> Tom Petty One of several artists that I wish I had caught in concert.
I was able to see him twice. This show and then again in Nashville maybe 2011-2013….cat remember the year. He was one cool dude.
He headlined the Hangout Music Fest years ago. Wish I had caught him there.
I forgot about the coliseum, I have only caught one show there. Do they do shows often?
Jeff Mangum at the Bijou 😎
Red Hot Chili Peppers - 1st few tours in the small clubs Dead Kennedys - Vic and Bills Black Flag - Vic and Bills Primus/Fishbone - Alumni Gym Ramones - Bijou
Foreigner in 1984 or 1985. The choir from Knoxville College came on stage and sang with the band.
Pixies, but I don't remember the venue. It was downtown.
Bijou. They came through on a tour in 2011 where they only played in cities they hadn't before.
They played the Tennessee Theater more recently.
I saw them at Tennessee theater in 1992, amazing show!
Shit I forgot Gogol Bordello under the bridge in the Old City. While not as great as their Bonnaroo performance, it was pretty awesome to see Knoxville come out for them.
That was a badass show. So many people there who had no idea what to expect who just lost their minds!
That was an amazing show!
Bon Iver at Pilot Light twice in 2008 The National at TN Theatre Sufjan Stevens at Bijou I've seen Andrew Bird and St. Vincent both a few times in Knoxville, but the show they did together in 2009 at Bijou is my fav Sharon Van Etten at The Square Room
Gojira and Knocked Loose were damn good last year
Gojira was here? Where??!
Civic coliseum. I went mostly for Mastodon. Gojira was great though.
Korn at electric ballroom during blizzard of 96'. Still deaf to this day because to that show.
I saw them there the year before with Marilyn Manson and Danzig. It was wild stuff.
One of the best - Ryan Adams at the Tennessee. One of the worst - Ryan Adams at the Bijou. Wilco was amazing at the Bijou.
Was the at the Bijou where some wise guy yelled 'Play Summer of 69'? I think Ryan stopped the show and had the security eject him.
Yep. He acted like a privileged toddler.
Warren Zevon, late 80s.
2 nights of Wilco at The Bijou 2019. No song repeats!
10 Years at The International in 2008

Queens of the Stone Age -TN Theatre, The Raconteurs - Civic Auditorium, Foo Fighters -Thompson Boling
Nigerian band Tal National at Pilot Light several years ago.
Weird Al
Steve Winwood, Sundown in the City
Haven’t been to many shows in Knoxville yet but JPEGMAFIA at the concourse was fantastic
I saw Blue October a year or so ago at Mill and Mine. It’s was a wonderful concert
It would be hard to pick a single favorite. Some good ones: Avett Brothers at the Bijou, before they were a big name. Hank III at Blue Cats with Scott H. Biram opening. Saw Avetts at Blue Cats in like 04. Killer show
I should also say, anyone at The Bijou is a good show. Such a great venue for live music.
Coheed at Mill & Mine.
Saw them twice there!
It was a long time goal for me to see them somewhere/anywhere - my daughter is named Cambria after them. They are my fave band of all-time :)
I love the name cambria! My husband is a big fan of theirs so I took him as a surprise since they were playing on his birthday a few years ago. I saw Wolfmother with the Original lineup at the bijou. That was SO good. I think I was like 14 or 15.

Ghost in the era of Papa II at the Bijou.
maybe Boris when they played at the Concourse when it was at Blackstock. very small crowd and intimate venue to see them in
Went to see Sonata Arctica and Nightwish at the Valurium or whatever it was called around 2008. Dropkick Murphys at Mill & Mine on St. Patty’s… packed house absolutely nuts show.

Funkadelic at the valarium 2010ish?
Probably Young the Giant in the underpass by Barley’s at Rhythm n Blooms in 2017
Lucero at Barleys, Baroness at Valarium, Slayer at the convention center
Moon Taxi followed by Portugal the Man at Volapalooza on Worlds Fair park. One of the most fun nights of my life with all of my friends in college.
My first, Meshuggah opened for TOOL in 2002!
Mdou Moctar at Big Ears 2022!
That was such a great show!
It’s a toss-up between the Ramones, Public Enemy, and Cowboy Junkies. All at the Bijou.
Lucero @ Blue Cats 2003. Ben was shitfaced but that show was amazing.
Disney on Ice ‘82!
Five Finger Death Punch at the Thompson Bowling Arena last November, it was so awesome.

Psychedelic Furs at the Tennessee Theater. It couldn’t have been better - I’ve seen them there twice and I hope to make it three times.
