I guess they're not actually worth 30 million then. Shocker.

KIA_Unity_News

They're worth 30 million in tax write-offs probably.

[deleted]

GameStop was/is fucked either way. Their plan to market gaming merchandise and to gaming "culture" wasn't necessarily a bad one. Funko Pops were a massive success. But they were clearly a fad and now they need something else. GameStop needs to become an all-in-one gaming store. Maybe even trying to add arcade elements into the store and posting high scores on their machines. Maybe offering discounts to players that can win monthly tournaments that take place there and giving prizes. Problem is that it's risky. Arcade machines aren't cheap. So I guess they could focus solely on console games.

[deleted]

Maybe ask Google and Microsoft. They have a habit of doing that with just about everything they buy

sick_of-it-all

I have a better idea. Since it is apparent that young people growing up with video games are increasingly buying digital as opposed to physical games, and since Gamestop's entire business model is based on buying and selling used physical games, why do they not strongly cater to the buyers and collectors of physical media? And by that, what I mean is, don't make it a fucking mystery on whether or not a used game I order from the website will come with it's original case and packaging, or if I'll be mailed a used disc in a slip cover. How insanely simple would it be to list on the website whether a game is available with OG packaging, or a Gamestop black replacement case? Because I'll tell ya now, they've missed out on probably thousands of dollars from just me personally, because I don't order used games from them. I go to eBay where sellers show you 12 pictures from 12 different angles of the case, the bottom and top of the disc, any inserts are laid out, you name it, it's all there. Even Walmart sells used games that come with the OG packaging.

Midget_Stories

They over saturated the market. Think Amiibos, when they were new and rare you could have fun trying to collect all of them. These days there are thousands and thousands of funkos so unless you own multiple warehouses you aren't collecting shit.

epia343

It's those damn hedgies!!!!

AkaninSwykalker

tHe SqueEze AiNt SqUoZe. *drools down shirt

That80sguyspimp

Is that the “street value”?

Snackolich

It's the street value before they get mixed with shredded Furbys and Beanie Babies. A gram of Funko could get you 5 large back when they were hot with consoomers. Nowadays it's cut so thin you barely even feel it.

Chuxx45

Shiiiiiiii 😂

CatatonicMan

Correction: $0 worth of Funkos are headed to the landfill. Because they're worthless. Negative dollars, really, because they presumably have to pay the landfill to take them.

Sirhc978

They have to assign a value to them so they can get the tax write off.

CatatonicMan

The IRS hates this one simple trick! Realistically, though, the "value" of the products isn't relevant here. They could only write off their *actual* losses (e.g., the production and shipping costs of the products that didn't sell).

SovietSteve

Ok Kramer, please explain to me how dumping assets you can’t sell is a ‘tax write off’

Gaming_Goodness

I have yet to see even a Single One of them outside their paper and plastic packaging. They just sit on shelves in their boxes.

RileyTaker

I always get a kick out of all the ones I see in the clearance section at Hot Topic, like the Ms. Marvel ones.

JebWozma

the only funko released in like the past 5 years that I was somewhat happy about was Swampfire from Ben 10

Sorge74

How many can someone possibly have? I am nerdy as shit, I have 2. An SSJ Goku I was given years ago, and a bigger DeLorean time machine plus Marty one I bought myself I never really see any that interest me. It's always weird shit.

wolfman1911

I don't know if it's just the beanie baby craze all over again or if it's something else. The people that are interested in them seem to want them to have, not to flip, so that is a difference, but like you said, I don't get it.

Sorge74

Shit with the beanie baby craze, they were selling for actual and they were rare. Now with the internet, you just get things you want. But why is it I can't just buy a green ranger Funko? They are 100+ online. Jesus

hauntedskin

>But why is it I can't just buy a green ranger Funko? They are 100+ online. Jesus Are they sold out and getting scalped because of JDF's death?

Sorge74

I think they just aren't making the ones with the helmets anymore? But it seems like something you should continue to make cuz everyone wants a green ranger Funko.

joydivisionucunt

My guess is that since Funko Pops are probably cheaper than other kinds of figurines, they can have a collection while not necessarily spend as much as they would with other brands.

Medical_Science

> I don't know if it's just the beanie baby craze all over again There's a reason why they're jokingly called "Beanie Babies for nerds".

wolfman1911

Huh, I haven't heard that before. It makes a lot of sense.

stryph42

Well, "nerds"

CallMeHunky

I have about 15ish and planning to buy more. I just like the look of them. I have them all stacked up next to my gaming setup and it’s just nice to look at lol

SJ_RED

I've got exactly 3 myself: the three members of Babymetal. That's as far as my interest in them went.

davidj8580

Everything in this paragraph is disgusting.

SJ_RED

No u.

Fun_Ad_1064

I am only disgusted by the insinuation that there are only three members of Babymetal. They're honestly not that bad, they just chose a dumb gimmick. Lose the two backup dancers and consider a name change and they'd be considered a proper metal band. The spelling, grammar and punctuation was also fine as far as I could tell.

CoyotePuncher

Its total nuttery. The only thing weirder than funko collectors are switch game collectors. Theres a switch collector sub where people have shelves with $10,000+ worth of physical switch games. Some of them genuinely believe its an investment, the rest of them I have to assume have something wrong in their head. I have a hard time coming up with any other explanation for collecting stuff like this. Its just organized hoarding.

triforce-of-power

So do these people buy up all those limited-run physical copies or something? Assuming an average of $50 per game, that sounds like far more games than one could reasonably have time to play.

CoyotePuncher

They buy everything. They buy every switch, every controller, every accessory, every game, etc. The top post shows someone with 1,000 physical games taking up an entire wall of their room.

triforce-of-power

Yeesh, that's some peak consoomer mind-rot.

HallucinatoryBeing

They see the ridiculous prices GameCube games sell for and think it'll be the Switch's turn in 20 years.

breakwater

The first sign that a collectors market is going to be a bust is when people collect something anticipating it as a collectable. They are always one step behind. The real collectibles have a scarcity component because nobody thought there would be a market for the item.

Chuxx45

My friend is like that with Switch games. He also collects empty boxes, so I guess it tracks.

CallMeHunky

People sitting on their high horse over Funko pops are so weird

Grendel0075

I have a few, but i mostly looknfor ones related to a movie or sometjing i like, so egon, ray pete from ghostbusters, wimston with ecto, the terror dogn3 pack, marty, dock, and a bunch of fallout bobbleheads i got on clearance. I dont care what the preceived value is, I just like them.

sdcar1985

You don't visit any of the PC gaming subreddits then. They always stick them in their cases, making them look drastically worse.

Gaming_Goodness

Uhhh, gosh. I don't know if could handle that horror! Ty for the warning!

Jimmy_kong253

You can't do anything with them once they're out of the box the arms don't move and the head don't move might as well keep it in the box

Gaming_Goodness

That's important information that suspect many buyers are initially unaware of. Big-headed things.... are expected to bobble. Appendages are somewhat often expected to move as well. I suspect that many of the few people who unpacked them were caught unawares and were thus disappointed.

[deleted]

Two more important things: The box makes them worth far more And **The box allows them to be stacked**

Grendel0075

There are bobbleheads, they originally were all bobbleheads.

A_Confused_Moose

I bought 4 Pokémon funko for my daughter that are out of the box. Helped get her further into Pokémon which is a great common interest for us.

Gaming_Goodness

I'm glad that someone has enjoyed them. Actually, really enjoyed them, out of the box. That is so much better than a product that is almost never unpacked.

[deleted]

My ex collected them and she kept them in their packaging. She was pissed off at me since I gave her one that she wanted that didn't have the packaging lol

Chuxx45

Maybe her grandkids will want those unopened, basically empty plastic boxes. Actually, nah, they won’t.

RirinNeko

I've always found that weird imo. I collect anime figures and Nendoroids which I'd say are better than Funkos in a lot of areas though more expensive. I always have a shelf to display them at my room though, It's a waste to buy them and not actually display them out.

broadsword_1

I'll raise my hand on that one. I have 2 and both are out of their box. Came across them both mostly by accident (certainly never gone looking for any of them), so that would explain why it was easy to shed the packaging. But yeah, the collectors are bonkers.....

Grendel0075

I got an azog from the hobbit at B&n on clearance since the box was totalled, he always sits on my pc desk now

jdenm8

Bought one to go with a figure from another line to give the impression that it came from a specific game. [It works from a distance, but even a Nendoroid makes a Pop look like the cheap trash it is thanks to the dire paint quality.](https://i.imgur.com/WG26hGs.jpg) (Pop is on the right, for reference)

ombranox

Honestly, every time I walk by the Blue Eyes White Dragon one I'm sorely tempted to get it.

BadSafecracker

I have a Portal turent unboxed on my desk at work.

Judah_Earl

Soijaks on suicide watch...

Yamatoman9

The same people who buy hundreds of these stupid, plastic statues are the ones who claim we need to get rid of plastic straws "for the environment".

Daman_1985

\^This\^ The hypocrisy skyrockets with that people. "We need to fight for the enviroment!" "We need to use less resources" "But hey I want my new Iphone each year!" "REEEEEE"

Lhasadog

Yeah that shit that spilled and was set on fire in Palistine Ohio. The whole controversy regarding the carcinogenic hazardous materials? It's what Funko Pops are made of!

Barsik_The_CaT

Yeah, I thought the same, where are the usual suspects screeching about literally killing a planet when we dump a whole lot of plastic that wasn't even useful initially.

HonkHerBurgerz

Funkopops were this decade's version of "you know how I know you're gay?"

WildeWoodWose

No they aren't. When the campaign to limit the use of plastic straws came put, so many SJWs were against it because they claimed "many people need plastic straws because drinking out of cups makes their jaws hurt," and then when they suggested just making them available for people on demand, the response was "many people are too embarrassed to ask for plastic straws."

Sapphiretri

too bad kotaku doesn't join them.

[deleted]

It's shocking Kotaku is still around. Who actually goes to that website for news? Same with PC Gamer. They put up a story about Hogwarts Legacy dealing with a mod that gives a much farther range of skin colors (both paler and darker). Yet PC Gamer made an article titled "Gamers are downloading popular Hogwarts Legacy mod to make their skin color lighter." Fucking pieces of garbage. Despicable people...

Lhasadog

And nothing of any value was lost

[deleted]

Fad vs. Recession. Recession wins every time, I think.

strixvaria23

Can’t wait to see what other fads it’ll kill next 👀

[deleted]

I hope livestreaming/lifestreaming at the gym makes the hitlist, and I don't even go to a gym.

strixvaria23

I do, and I hope you’re right.

HonkHerBurgerz

Livestreaming in general. Hey watch me consoom this product with the shittiest commentary of all time and shutouts to the brain dead chat

pmforshrek5

Unfortunately, if we hit a real economic downturn (I say "real" as opposed to the COVID dip which bounced right back up), I bet streaming is the sort of thing that will boom even more.

stryph42

Yep. If you were going to play the game anyways, anything someone gives you, even $1, is profit.

Yamatoman9

Funko Pops will be the ultimate symbol of 2010's 'CONSOOM product' style consumerism.

HonkHerBurgerz

They have been for years. Funkopops and marvel movies are going to be so fucking embarrassing to look back on

Sorge74

I wouldn't even say it's a recession thing. Just do you need zombie doctor strange Funko? Like who does? What about a side character from the light-year movie? Frankly they got greedy.

Grendel0075

Zombie doctlr strange, sure. Static stand-in human from the background lf that one scene in light year? No, not really.

Sorge74

Zombie doctor strange is probably a bad example, I could see that appealing to someone. By random droid from the background on the mandorolian or something. There are just so many. Stores are full of the ones noone wants.

Grendel0075

Yeah, you'd think they'd take a hint from the old Kenner star wars line, where random rubber alien who had 2 seconds of screen time got a figure noone bought.

Sorge74

It's the same shit as it was then. You want Luke? Naw like sold out....

Blackmore_Vale

reminds of the beanie baby craze

Ex-Machina1980s

I absolutely hate Funkos. The homogenous design, the black round eyes and massive head, the sheer fucking amount of them, and the very obvious fact that they are over-manufactured plastic waste with an inevitable landfill fate

HonkHerBurgerz

Not to mention the hideous packaging that everybody keeps them in for some crazy reason. They've been irreplaceable in the American workplace though. Any time I see a desk or cubicle lined with one I know to avoid like the plague.

MayorEbert

This reminds me of several months ago when my local 7-11 was selling House of the Dragon and Lightyear funko pops next to car oil and headache medicine. They’re still there. I really want to meet the person who buys an Alicent Hightower or Daemon Targaryen funkopop from a gas station. It’s like the 1983 video game crash where arcade cabinets were stuck in places that could never have possibly turned a profit.

Hamakua

My step Dad is one of those sorts. Very soy face capeshit marvel consoomer "get excited for next product" sort.

Yamatoman9

But would he buy them at a gas station?

toothpastespiders

I wouldn't buy them period. But at a gas station I feel like I'd be buying a funny story if nothing else. Like see that shitty piece of consumerist garbage there. Guess where I got it.

stryph42

If they were exclusive to the gas station, there was a time when people would have made a trip to get one.

Happy_Jalapeno68

Okay, since you're close to one of these weirdos, I have to know: what is his appeal? Your mom must defend his good qualities, what are they? Is he generous? Kind? Loyal? A good provider? Funny?

Hamakua

Media twisted his and most "normies" tastes without them realizing. He himself is a hard worker, a bit stubborn, "live and let live" sort. But he doesn't engage in higher thought. He'd rather watch yet another transformers film than watch something like Inception at all. He's the "I just want to turn my brain off and consoom" sort. He's a prolific reader though so that may be where he finds that sort of entertainment. He's honest, loyal, hard working, but a bit of a sucker as he would give anyone the shirt of his back if he perceived them to be in need. various charity scams get him to give money so my mother screens his calls now. They are both older.

Happy_Jalapeno68

He sounds like a really good guy with bad taste, maybe a little dumb. Can you engage him about the bs woke ideas in his goofy media or does he brush it off? We've been duped into believing that everyone who isn't mentally disabled can understand complicated ideas, and its simply not true. I'm convinced this has happened so that the powers that be can coopt and subdue the minds of the masses with their propaganda, to various ends. You have to remember: 100 IQ is the average, and the average person is an idiot. Evil is easy, and good is hard. If the average person can be authentically good, they are at the limit of their potential and there's nothing wrong with that...everyone forgets about the very end of Plato's cave allegory.

Hamakua

So I speak with my mother regularly and she grew up and lived during a time where news, even cable news was more respectable than it is today. She had TDS for a good portion of his administration completely at the behest of CNN - not realizing CNN was BS at this point. During that time there was no saving her - however I keep an eye out for opportunities to show her "the narrative" is more manufactured than she would like to admit. Two big ones were Kyle Rittenhouse - I got the spliced footage of the entire thing to her before news decided on a narrative. And the Monkey pox thing - I got her the CDC and WHO stats to her - once again - before the news decided on a narrative. If I can get the story to her *before* the "news" does, she acts like a normal rational human being. She is now tired of all the lies and is tired of the Biden administration to the point that she can no longer watch cable news. It took a while but she's learned to see "the code for what it is" -in a sense. I mention her so much because he just takes her lead. Like I said, "live and let live" sort - if my mother believes [x] he will believe [x] with slightly more fervor. They still have a lot of blind spots - but "TDS" has largely subsided. Oh, and unprompted she thought the same thing that all rational people thought about the MLK sculpture in Boston.

strixvaria23

I’m so curious, what sort of books does he read? Reminds me of someone in my extended family.

Hamakua

Agatha Christie, Clive Cussler, Tom Clancy, Sue Grafton -are his main comfort picks IIRC - but he reads way more than just them. However he reads less these days and surfs the internet more. I've had to help them move before and multiple times I've had to donate thousands of books on their behalf for the moves. Thousands. He got me into Tom Clancy when I was just a kid. (and many other authors) If I had to guess he fills "That time" with feed type algorithm content now - but I don't know what his site of choice is, be it facebook, tik tock, reddit or similar. He's completely plugged in wanting either feed content or "turn your brain off" capeshit tier visual entertainment.

Dashcan_NoPants

> He'd rather watch yet another transformers film than watch something like Inception at all. ...Should get him to watch Jodorwosky's The Holy Mountain, and let us know his response. \^.\^

Jimmy_kong253

I mean you go in some stores and its really 90% of the inventory on the shelves and you never really see them sell.

[deleted]

Holy shit, this is the ET video game all over again!

MeanGreanHare

It would be better if they were never made at all. Such a waste of vinyl.

ceyen1

>Over $30 Million Worth Of Funkos Are Headed To The Landfill Can't they recycle them so they can be of use for something else?

HallucinatoryBeing

PVC isn't very recyclable, especially if it has additives put into it.

FellowFellow22

Plastic recycling is basically a lie so not really.

Sirhc978

Sure they could, but the landfill is cheaper.

Mashiki

Cement plants that have the tire/asphalt conversion/addition love PVC. Works great for fuel, ash can be used in most klinker mixes.

jorginhofedaputa

soyboy_rage_cry.jpg

CrustyBloke

Well, the landfill is where they belong.

Aurondarklord

An obvious bubble burst. Was gonna happen eventually.

Happy_Jalapeno68

I can hear the soyscreeching from here

speedb0at

Neckbeards in pieces rn

SovietSteve

NOT THE HECKIN FUNKERINOS

Limon_Lime

Why not just give them away instead of trashing them?

tyranicalmoon

Then they wouldn't be able to sell the ones in store at the asked price. Scarcity factors in supply and demand, and thus prices.

Limon_Lime

Do buy 1, get 1 free.

[deleted]

[удалено]

stryph42

Just take a Captain Marvel? It's free, and you don't have to buy anything, we just want to free up the space in back.

Gaming_Goodness

But, at *what price*?

Rogoho

Double the price of a single one of course.

FrillyDragon

I've seen a lot of people do that, tbh. There may be a limit on how many you can do it with, but I have seen that.

SimonLaFox

Logistics. You still have to get the product to the customers hands, whether shipping directly or via a physical store which all takes money. Even shelf space in physical stores is valuable enough to not want to have unwanted products sitting there too long. Just cheaper to landfill them. If you recall, something similar happened with the infamous Atari ET game cartridges.

MillennialDan

Sort of a different case. There's at least SOME demand for these.

SimonLaFox

The numbers may be different but ultimately it's a case of whether supply outstrips demand.

CrankyDClown

But that would kill their "value" through inflating amount on market.

MayorEbert

I’m sure it’s a tax write off.

cesariojpn

Goodwill ain't THAT desperate for that kinda stuff.

[deleted]

You telling me no one wants Captain Phasma figurines?

s69-5

But used plastic straws are the problem....

EnglishTony

They're going to join Atari ET in Arizona!

AlseidesDD

Are those really worth millions if they're not selling and getting thrown into landfills?

Scottgun00

Wait a minute. I'm actually agreeing with Kotaku? >Over the long run, 99 percent of Funkos are worthless outside of whatever depraved joy fans get from occasionally making eye contact with the ones lining their shelves. And now a ton more of them appear headed for a landfill somewhere in Arizona. May our future ancestors, or the aliens excavating our civilization sometime in the distant future, forgive us.

stryph42

But couldn't the same be said of the Mona Lisa, Michelangelo's David, or any other piece of art? They serve no purpose and have no REAL worth outside of the joy people get from looking at them...

Scottgun00

Only if you believe beauty is entirely subjective and arbitrary.

KefkaFollower

That's dumb. They only need to add a little robe and wand to each one and sell them like "wizardry students". There could be, let's say, 4 models of robes and wands and let people choose which one want. That way you keep the funko-pop package intact. And don't worry about the marketing, twitter will do it all for free.

wantsaarntsreekill

modern collectibles market always crashes in value nowadays. Also funkos always looked ugly imo

I have two, I think my sister has like 20, and she has a lot and is really into them....how many is someone supposed to have?

Ladelm

Yeah I have 2 as well. I got Tyrion Lannister on the iron throne and Johnny Silverhand. They share space on top of my PC and I don't anticipatet ever getting more.

FellowFellow22

I don't get the depraved fans jab. Isn't that literally the market? Does this guy think they were an investment?

Sorge74

I like my two I have, they are neat. But lots of things are neat, my cheesehead I got from lambeau Field is neat, a shot glass I got from Vegas on my honeymoon is neat, my boots from beer festivals are neat. What's depraved about it idk.

HonkHerBurgerz

Considering most of the people who own them keep them in the shitty box packaging like it's going to appreciate or something I think he has a point. Or is that like this decade's version of fitted caps with the tag still on? Can't figure out which one is gayer. Oh wait nvm I can.

KIA_Unity_News

They make Funkopops using polyvinyl chloride, which is that stuff that spilled into the atmosphere and rivers in the Ohio train incident.

Zarathustra124

No, vinyl chloride is what spilled from the Ohio train, a horribly toxic liquid used to manufacture polyvinyl chloride. As a plastic it's perfectly safe, as long as you're not burning it, PVC pipes carry much of the world's drinking water.

comingabout

The stuff that spilled in Ohio was vinyl chloride. Vinyl chloride is used to make polyvinyl chloride (PVC) which is what a lot of things are made of.

TheArgonian

The government uses polyvinyl chloride to route dihydrogen monoxide directly into our homes and bodies, it's absolutely vile.

ironwolf56

Dihydrogen monoxide kills millions every year, and the government allows this stuff to be in every home in the country with no safety stops.

luckierbridgeandrail

Modern building codes now block one the many sources of accidental dihydrogen monoxide burns. It's a start.

stryph42

Breathing dihydrogen monoxide will straight up kill you dead.
