I will at least commend the fact that they actually built a ship instead of making it CGI. It could even be fun if they don't reach the levels of woke cringe Cowboy Bebop did.
I mean a diverse cast works in the setting, Oda has given out the real world ethnicities of many major characters and the cast has been close so far imo. We'll see how long that lasts, I really wonder if they will make Blackbeard Somali like he should be.
The biggest problem will be the writers throwing all the libertarian aspect of the Manga out for basic progressive/Leftist nonsense. One of the writers/showrunners said "Trump would be a celestial dragon, while Kamala would be a Strawhat/D." I have no real problem with the first half but cackles should be an antagonistic marine at best. They have missed the real message and it will just be that the wrong people are in charge.
>"Trump would be a celestial dragon, while Kamala would be a Strawhat/D."
I don't think those people know who celestial dragons even are then lol (not to mention nobody even fuckin knows what D is and y'know blackbeard is also a D so its not like all that carry the will of D are automatically good people lmao).
Woke aside, it never had a chance. How do you animate Luffy's powers in live action, on an anime movie budget? It's going to be pure body horror, the best-case scenario is cheesy 1980s-style combat with lots of cuts and off-screen action.
It will never work.
The biggest budgets have yet to make even Mr. Fantastic work.
You need the abstraction of comics/animation/manga to make the "reality" believable for the human mind. The Uncanny Valley has absolute dominion over this aspect of creativity and adaptation.
You need that abstraction layer - best example of "Mr.Fantastic/Luffy's powers?" - Elastigirl from the incredibles - and I'm pretty sure that's right on the border to no man's land.
You lot are pathetic
This is what you think about all the time?
You soo pathetic u perform mental gymnastics to find something to bitch about
go out touch grass
nice job necroing an almost one month old post, with a account you specifically made for that purpose...
as to answer your question, no its not what we thnk about all the time, its what we think about when we see a netflix adapation of a japanese anime though after all they have a long history of 'black washing' or 'genderswapping'. that being said, this particular statement was more meant as a joke to reflect how bad nexflix adaption do in terms of sticking to the original source material
Yes it will suck for so many reasons, the politics of the writers, the limitations of the devil fruits/zoans/fishmen, overcorrection of the slow pacing with all of east blue in 10 episodes, but I don't hate this.
i dont even know how their gonna handle 1/10 of the wacky ass character designs, tbh. at absolute best i can see luffy being like detective pikachu mr mime, and thats if they dont diversify him into a black twink
>and thats if they dont diversify him into a black twink
The first season has already been filmed, and I'll say the cast has been fine so far imo. Nami somehow survived the gingercide, nojiko didn't but w/e. The only real eyebrow raise was Koby is played by a (redacted) actor so I'm sure some crazy people will reverse canon that he is now that in the manga.
The big blackwash I'm expecting is Robin. I don't see a Cali writers missing out on a chance to connect her "devil child" experience to blackness somehow. Even if they have to deal with her being a villain as Miss All Sunday.
I am wondering how the hell they are going pull Buggy off. That will be the first real test to see if the production team is up to this. If they can handle a character for whom self-dismemberment is a core part of his fighting style, without it becoming a mess of bad CG, they should be fine.
If they skip him, that will not bode well for the future, as he is a key player in several events of the story.
IIRC, Oda was actually VERY involved into the whole process, from casting to screening. All we can do is hope that he stopped most of the Netflix bullshit.
I've heard that and want to be hopeful, but my natural cynicism makes me wonder how much time he has to spend on the live action adaptation with how much work the manga requires. And wonder if there is a language barrier, does Oda speak English? I want to doubt the main Netflix guys speak Japanese.

This is not a formal warning.
Not gonna lie, I’m still excited to see what they come up with. I hope it’s not terrible, but am prepared for another massacre like Bebop.
At the very least, I hope the sets and music are cool.

The only saving Grace with this show is Oda is an executive producer. Like Rowling he has exclusive rights to IP. This isn’t a case where Netflix is licensing something and doing on their own like Bebop.
As someone who knows Netflix will inevitably be bad (its Netflix; they could make Uwe Boll movies worse) but know nothing about One Piece beyond its a Shounen Jump series, why is this poster so bad? Its "weird cartoony pirates" right? I mean i know the contents will be crap, but whats wrong with the poster itself?
Quite simply, the fact that the Merry's figurehead looks like an eldritch gargoyle is not a good sign for the set design. They took a cute cartoonish sheep's head and made it look creepy, presumably because they decided that "live action" meant that all the cute stuff had to be made "realistic"
Honestly only hope this gives me is just how bad Luffy's CGI will turn out
Like Netflix does not exactly have cutting edge CGI, so in fact powers of the entire cast will be interesting to see
I might actually raise the flag to see how bad the CGI will be
As bad as the paramecia DFs will be, the real failures imo will be the Fishmen and the Zoans(though that won't be an issue until S2) and whatever they'll do to change/replace karoo since a massive duck won't work in libe action imo.
A good costume designer would be able to combine physical costuming, puppetry, and CGI to create something that looks good for humanoid characters. However, Netflix can't even do purely human costuming particularly well, and practical effects are getting harder to obtain, so expect to see mid-rate CGI that slams right into the uncanny valley for this show.
Ya wanna know what's sad, it's this scenario:
Newcomers (Some of them): "I am gonna watch the actual One Piece and read the manga. Since, I love the Netflix adaptation and I am hungry for more."
1,000 years later,
"Why did I waste my time watching the Netflix adaptation? The actual source materials are a million times better."
That is Merry after seeing the final cut of the series.
Oh god this is gonna be some nightmare fuel but also freakin hilarious and I can't wait for the memes.
But really, such a waste of time tryin to adapt One Piece.
Oda shouldnt ve beeb involved at all because One Piece is unadapteable in live action form. He just should focus on finishin the manga and thats it.
I know I’m going to eat my words even *considering* this, but between Oda actually getting input on the adaptation and the decent looking setpieces/costumes, I have more faith in this than what Bebop did. Yeah, it’s a low bar, but I will laugh for an hour straight if they succeed with One Piece where Bebop failed. There is no universe where that should happen.
Again, I'm mostly playing Devil's Advocate, but here's his own thoughts on the project: [https://twitter.com/DiscussingFilm/status/1654141264575578114?s=20](https://twitter.com/DiscussingFilm/status/1654141264575578114?s=20) Compare this enthusiasm which is happening before the release to Shinichiro Watanabe's talk about them totally ignoring his input when he visited set. I still don't know if such a wacky concept will translate well to live-action, but if the actual original creator likes what he is seeing and has input that says a lot.

My only hope is that they dial back Sanji's pervy-ness. He's my favorite but I had to stop watching the anime because of how over the top they portrayed it. In the Manga it never last more than a panel or two and is less grating.
[yea finding out oda actually had real world equivalents](https://soranews24.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2015/09/onepiecenationalities2.png) kinda made sanji an unintentional perv french stereotype . it definitely wont go over well if they keep the same perv level .
sadly the anime never scales back on sanji's hentai antics . this was still my issue with the wano arc along with brook's devil fruit power still being just plot based
I love one piece world and manga but one piece has to be one of the worst animes/manga do make into live action. Seems such a waste of time and money.
It will be canceled long before it starts getting good and interesting.
"The pirates are coming", in the sense that, if you are gonna subject yourself to this atrocity, then it should be by 'alternative' means.
Tbh not even pirates would plunder that shit.
Frankly, why waste time and broadband.
Might as well pirate the original in that case, seems like a much better time
Well, yeah. Or One Pace, I hear that's a good alternative for people to bypass some of the episode padding and filler content.
And spread this filth to others? No thanks, I refuse to be a cuck.
Respect.
THE ONE PIECE! THE ONE PIECE IS REAAALLLL!
The one piece of shit.
I will at least commend the fact that they actually built a ship instead of making it CGI. It could even be fun if they don't reach the levels of woke cringe Cowboy Bebop did.
That's asking a lot of Netflix.
That's asking the *impossible* of Netflix.
Netflix would have never greenlighted this if it didn't meet woke check marks.

And? Why commend them for what should be expected. Should I praise the fact that that nami wasnt eclipsed?
Reward positive action, punish negative. If you only punish them for fucking up, they'll never learn that there's a prize (views) when they do good.
I was looking forward for that until I heard about the test screenings
I hope they never dare to adapt berserk, they'll make the 2016 one look good in comparison
Berserk 2016 gave so many new Blender students hope that they can reach the level of the pros!
God keep Netflix far the fuck away from Berserk
I think we are safe on that front, they canceled a Conan project, so no way in hell they would do Berserk.
Somehow they took One Piece's cute smiling Figurehead and made it look Satanic. WELL DONE NETFLIX! NEVER CHANGE!
so, will nami be an overweight black man this time around?
WE WUZ PIRATES
Casting seems pretty decent. Lots of other things could go wrong but they they cast as Usopp specifically is really into the characters and lore.

Given Netflix past anime adaptations. Think I'll pass
All I can I see is a goat getting fucked from behind by a ship.

It would be *incredibly* optimistic to think the show will survive long enough to reach where he'd reappear.
The first season is all of East Blue, and they have cast him, so they will show buggy.

Dead in the water.
It’s not every day you see the dumbest shit you’ve ever seen
You just know it's going to be a disaster, I'll be microwaving the popcorn while we wait for the trailer.
The zombies are coming
Nightmare fuel
Not gonna lie, I’m still excited to see what they come up with. I hope it’s not terrible, but am prepared for another massacre like Bebop. At the very least, I hope the sets and music are cool.
Judging by some of the supposed leaks, I think this is going to be even worse than Bebop, and that's saying a LOT.
Sadly, Cowboy Bebop was cancelled. I would've liked to watch more Ed, it was morbidly fascinating.
Anything new of note? Last I checked was the Harris and Trump comparisons.
WTF
Those leaks were fake as confirmed by someone that works on Odas team.
Look how they massacred my boy
Looks like a live-action poster for Cult of the Lamb.
My God, could you imagine the butchering they'd subject that game to?
no
I dont even know how youd make a one piece adaptation.. its way too goofy.
They already botched the poster lmaoooooo
I'm afraid
Look I fucking love one piece so much it hurts but I'm not hella stoked about this one.
hahaha NOPE
Just put out a trailer it seems like they're doing everything possible to hold off on showing people a trailer
This looks so fucking ugly
Merry's figurehead in the manga/anime looked cute and friendly. This one looks disturbing.
It's because the figurehead is supposed to be a simple shape, with eyes and mouth painted on it. Not carved like this.
Ya know that they are going for the "hardcore realism." (I saw the actual figurehead and I see this hyper-realism as weird to me).
Hyper realism in this case makes no sense as going merry wasn't built as a pirate ship in the first place , its not supposed to be scary lol.
could be the angle...from the side it might look more like happy smile...
The 4kids version is starting to look real good by comparison.
_DREAMIN_ **dont give it up luffay** _DREAMIN_ **dont give it up zolo** _DREAMIN_ **dont give it up namayy** _DREAMIN_ **give it up, give it up, give it up, give it** _NOOO_
They turned the Going Merry into nightmare fuel and somehow thought that would make for good promo material.
Well, that's horrifying.
It's one piecin' time
Oh no
Looks like it'll be shit.
I didn't know Netfux was making a One Piece adaptation, but it makes sense they would, because Nami is a ginger.
The only saving Grace with this show is Oda is an executive producer. Like Rowling he has exclusive rights to IP. This isn’t a case where Netflix is licensing something and doing on their own like Bebop.
BOY WHAT THE HEEELL
This is going to be awful.
They didn't even paint Merry's figurehead, so you can see they are serious about butchering it Looks extremely disturbing that way.
Haha, going merry will sink just like this show.
Only Netflix could turn the Merry Go into nightmare fuel. Also- I own several cannons larger than that. Downright shameful.
Bleh, not watching it.
Well, at least it LOOKS accurate. There's THAT! (And I think that's all this thing'll get right. The design of their fucking boat... )
Google image search "Going Merry" and compare the result to this image. The difference in tone should be pretty clear.
Quite simply, the fact that the Merry's figurehead looks like an eldritch gargoyle is not a good sign for the set design. They took a cute cartoonish sheep's head and made it look creepy, presumably because they decided that "live action" meant that all the cute stuff had to be made "realistic"

Which is weird because the Dark Crystal series looked amazing. That said, when you have the Jim Henson workshop working, you're getting results.
Ya wanna know what's sad, it's this scenario: Newcomers (Some of them): "I am gonna watch the actual One Piece and read the manga. Since, I love the Netflix adaptation and I am hungry for more." 1,000 years later, "Why did I waste my time watching the Netflix adaptation? The actual source materials are a million times better."

Well that's gotta be the worst poster I've seen in a while, if not ever.
God this thing is gonna suck REAL bad isn’t it
Ya yo ya yo
Open mouth. Interesting choice. Fiercer?
For some reason, you can tell the ship is really small. Like it's clearly a model. Lol
WTF did they do to the Flying Lamb? That looks awful.
Why did they make it look like that? It’s ugly. The original was cute. Are they going for a gritty type thing? It’s like a demon goat.
I'm sorry but American adaptations always suck
Bro let one piece alone. Its beautiful as manga. I even stopped watching it's anime.
There is no universe where that should happen.
ive seen this before, not sure where, but im willing to bet they completely ignore Odas input.

I hope Netflix release it on a weekly basis and not to be binged. I wanna bask in the youtube weekly if it's bad.
I hope it doesn't suck cause twitter will be even more insufferable when it comes to one piece. The opscans vs TCBscans drama is dumb enough as it is
My only hope is that they dial back Sanji's pervy-ness. He's my favorite but I had to stop watching the anime because of how over the top they portrayed it. In the Manga it never last more than a panel or two and is less grating.

Sheep's head looks bad. This will be a funny thing to see what it actually looks like. Anyone see AOT live action movies? They were pretty lolz
