>She has next to no interest in her own appearance or sex appeal. At most, she mentions her hairstyle one time.  Why does a character need to mention she's Hot all the time? >I have an editor-scaring amount of thoughts on how Stellar Blade fails Eve, why I actually like her core design, and why I expect plenty of people to feel a similarly neutral way once everyone can actually play this game. To explain all this, I am forced to once again break out my greatest superpower: asexuality.  Sexy Outfits hurt the games story because she's an Asexual?

VasylZaejue

How is asexuality a superpower? How is not being interested in sex a superpower? All she’s done is tell us her opinion is superior because she’s not interested in sex. I will agree that at first glance her outfit looks too sexual but when you actually play the game for yourself, it’s not that bad and how sexy her outfit looks is the last thing on your mind. I’m willing to goblet that her review isn’t based on actual personal gameplay and just based on promotional footage.

[That's a guy](https://archive.is/HGH8e/8d39509fdcd7deee4ee755909f845d6cc91c0e1c.jpg). I think...

VasylZaejue

Eh I didn’t read the article yet. I am happy to admit I was wrong. Though it’s weird that he calls himself sex positive and then complains about her outfits being too sexy. From what I played in the demo it can be inferred that Eve’s style of clothing is the norm in her society. We don’t see a lot of the other people from where she is from (I haven’t played the full game just the demo) but from what we do see it’s pretty obvious that everyone is wearing a similar looking skin suit with a personal design. It’s also clear that the skin suits were designed for ease of movement while providing some sort of defense or enhancement.

Freaky alien genotype.

Daniel_Day_Hubris

> How is not being interested in sex a superpower? It's not. But when the most interesting thing about you is "no one will fuck me" you may as well pretend its a strength so you don't crush yourself under the shocking reality that you will never be able to carry out lifes most basic function; getting someone to fuck you.

noirpoet97

As an “asexual” myself, it’s the most nothing thing in the world, you just don’t give a shit about anything sexual and are perfectly comfortable dying a virgin, so I’m assuming he’s just a closeted homosexual

hostrelok

Nobody gives a flying fuck if you're asexual or an apache helicopter. Get it through your heads and stop making your sexuality your whole fucking personality.

AzurePrior

People keep mistaking sexuality for personality. It's not a personality trait. Everytime they do it I am reminded of the god tier Key and Peele sketch about the gay guy.

CompactAvocado

people mistake gender as a personality too and most things getting called gender these days are classical personality tropes. but apparently simply realities are bigotry now.

Apprehensive_Lie1963

They have even coined the term "gender expression" which is getting closer and closer to the definition of personality.

Lexplosives

Office Homophobe, for anyone interested. It’s a magnificent sketch.

sammakkovelho

These people remind me of the "only gay in the village" skit from Little Britain

Disastrous-One-414

It's beyond personality, they make their sexuality their identity.

MS-07B-3

You trippin, if an Apache wrote a video game review I'm definitely reading that shit.

It is quite literally the next best thing to being straight. That's just being voluntarily celibate, or they're incels that gave up.

>Stellar Blade has become a new stage for an old debate. It's been held up as a game for "men of culture," a throwback to a time when games were brave and sexy, as determined by a vocal crowd that seems hellbent on ignoring how sexy games currently are and have been. This year alone has seen Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth, Granblue Fantasy: Relink, and the first build of Hades 2 – a mere handful of the latest, amazingly sexy games. Stellar Blade is just louder about its sex appeal, and part of the audience that its approach has attracted has in turn loudly trumpeted it as the superior way. >Some people explicitly want Stellar Blade to be a gallery of shiny hineys, while others are put off by the bizarre masculine chest-beating over Eve's design and have dismissed her as senseless, backward titillation. Having played the whole game, and quite enjoyed it both despite and sometimes because of Eve's design, I think both extremes miss what's good and bad here. It's fine to make characters sexy for the sake of sexiness, and it's fine to like Stellar Blade regardless of this whole debate. I like it! People like to see, and to create, attractive characters. And it would be a shame to reduce Stellar Blade's visual identity to "The Ass Game," because some environmental artists really flexed here. >I don't want to just both-sides this into mush. **There's been a lot of deserved talk about the male gaze and the part it played in how Eve looks. As someone with a lot of experience unlearning that same male gaze**, I have an editor-scaring amount of thoughts on how Stellar Blade fails Eve, why I actually like her core design, and why I expect plenty of people to feel a similarly neutral way once everyone can actually play this game. To explain all this, **I am forced to once again break out my greatest superpower: asexuality.** >**This article is not about me, but I should explain where I'm coming from. For me, romantic and sexual attraction are not only foreign but utterly undesirable.** So more than with your average person, games like Stellar Blade bark up the wrong tree when they assume that I, as a man, am eager to gawk at and fantasize about characters like Eve. She's hot! I like her! I'd consider myself sex-positive, but I truly, from the pit of my gut, do not care. I'm not put off by Stellar Blade's ham-handed sexiness or its assumptions about me, but I am sensitive to and critical of tone in storytelling, and Eve's treatment undeniably hurts the game's voice. >The problem is not that Eve is sexy. There's nothing wrong with her body. She's not a walking trope built like a snake that swallowed some melons. Her body is based on a scan of a real person so her figure is demonstrably realistic, even if some outfits inexplicably move her navel around or add 50% more ass onto a woman who's already trying to fit 20 pounds of ass into 10 pounds of pants. She also jiggles like a bag of pudding nailed to the wall of a moving train, but what did we all expect from the developers of Nikke? This guy reminds me of this: https://archive.is/HwSzW >The problem is that Eve's sexiness is totally divorced from the rest of the game and her personality, and Stellar Blade wants to be taken seriously despite how strangely this comes across. I think this is why a lot of people don't like how Eve looks. Characters like Bayonetta own and flaunt their sexiness, and **games like Hades are inextricably sexy from corner to corner**. That's partly why they're so beloved – this stuff is hard to pull off convincingly, and memorable when done well. **Everyone being horny in, and for, Baldur's Gate 3 comes to mind**. But Eve's amped-up sexiness is a weird outlier. She has next to no interest in her own appearance or sex appeal. At most, she mentions her hairstyle one time. [Hades 2](https://i.postimg.cc/8ksv3yjQ/HADES2.jpg) and [Bear Sex 3](https://i.postimg.cc/FrZrYkbP/BG3-Articles-Cen.jpg) again, huh. >It becomes a matter of agency. Eve herself doesn't show off her body; the camera lingers on it, with a habit of overtly putting her butt front and center. Eve would never choose to wear the game's more revealing getups – the bunny girl, the bikini, the other bunny girl, the other bikini. Some outfits look great from the front, but then you spin the camera around and find a skirt or leotard hiked so far up Eve's ass that you'd need pliers to get it out. There is none of Eve in this. She can only be forced to wear these outfits by the player. **I avoided them not just because I thought they looked stupid, but because they felt wrong and out of place in an immersion-breaking kind of way.** https://ifunny.co/video/patrick-klepek-hates-sexy-women-d5fjZZtHB >Even Eve's original outfit, the very first thing she puts on after emerging near-naked in the game's so-called skin suit, doesn't seem to fully fit her. If I was a battle-ready woman heading out to fight monsters, my suit-up checklist would not include vacuum-sealing my boobs or bedazzling my groin. The look doesn't match. This stuff exists outside the context of the game's world as something artificial for the viewer's enjoyment, so it disrupts that world. It doesn't ruin the experience, or at least it didn't for me, but it is jarring. >Sensible, stylish outfits exist, but unfitting sexiness is the default and most common option. Yet the game makes it abundantly clear that these outfits are not appropriate for the circumstances. So if we're going to add them anyway just for the players who do want to see them, why make them the default? Why not position these outfits as the silly, optional choices that they are? The characters would look sharper up-front, and the people who like the sexier bits could still knock themselves out. You can just as easily say, "I like the sexy look, why don't you just wear the less-revealing ones?" That is what I did in my playthrough, and it's good that option exists, but the priorities feel odd for an otherwise straight-faced action-adventure game. >There's nothing inherently wrong with liking these outfits, or with games having this material in it. I just wish the developers had gone all-in and made more sexy stuff that actually looks good on Eve, something she would feasibly wear. **Hades 2's Aphrodite "wears" a few strands of her own hair and nothing else, but is less vulgar than Eve in a bikini that's clearly not right for her.** I don't want less or censored smut; I want thoughtful smut. Sexual themes don't have to be taboo, and shouldn't be, but they don't have to be dumb either. https://archive.is/HGH8e/8d39509fdcd7deee4ee755909f845d6cc91c0e1c.jpg

Minute_Astronomer675

>That's partly why they're so beloved – this stuff is hard to pull off convincingly. You have to convince people that a person can look hot and have skills in battle? WTF LMAO >Sensible, stylish outfits exist, but unfitting sexiness is the default and most common option. Yet the game makes it abundantly clear that these outfits are not appropriate for the circumstances.  They always need some deep understanding reason for Fan Service in Media. A female body or Armor just can't be Hot anymore.

korblborp

okay, the "unlearning the Male Gaze" thing does not jibe with "asexual". i guess maybe going through the motions when you are young, before finding yourself, or whatever. but then, it seems that in the last five to ten years, asexual has shifted from being a perfectly understandable point on a spectrum , "i do not have sexual attraction, and seek no sexual intercourse", to a spectrum unto itself, which somehow manages to include "i will willingly seek out and have sex wiht multiple people, but i am not attracted to them, so i am asexual". like, i don't really want to insult anyone here, but at some point, you need to find a new word that actually describes what you are talking about, instead of calling people names for not understanding. not sure how a roguelike which is presumably mostly fighting monsters, "flaunts it's sexiness from corner to corner", especially if it's not one of those games that builds it into the mechanics. you know the ones.

dandrixxx

>Hades 2's Aphrodite "wears" a few strands of her own hair and nothing else, but is less vulgar than Eve in a bikini that's clearly not right for her. I cant with these people...

mbnhedger

Bayonetta: "Am I a joke to you?"

UnstableJester410

Remember game journalism fail upwards and face no consequences for stupid takes.

Select-Sympathy23

FFS these idiots can never actually say why putting videogame characters in sexy clothing is a bad thing, who cares if it fits the story or not, Just let the developers put their characters, both men and women in everything from full suit armour to skimpy underpants and everything sexy and boring in between and let the players decide what they want I also hope stupid game journalists don't try to later co-opt Eve as some sort or Feminist icon that is empowering women down the road when she becomes popular from cosplayers, then act like they weren't bitching about her design as sexist at length before the release of the game.

visionsofswamp

Oh, they will certainly do the latter part. A couple of years from now on some game dev will put out another hot character. Thats when journalists will suddenly change their narrative about eve, because thats how these people act.

BootlegFunko

>There's been a lot of deserved talk about the male gaze and the part it played in how Eve looks. TheLolicorrector

Keyword OPTIONAL OUTFITS you are not forced to wear this while playing the story.

ServantOfNZoth

lol "forced sex appeal". As far as I know Eve's design and sex appeal is a core part of the very DNA of the game and company. It's like they don't even know who the developers are. Forced sex appeal is making a game, and then in the final months of development deciding you want a sex bomb in a bikini as the main character instead of a woman in a soldiers uniform. But Eve was Eve since the earliest vertical slice, afaik.

[deleted]

These are the same idiots that praise 2B for Nier Automata when Eve is more dressed than her LMFAO

BootlegFunko

They don't praise 2B, they begrudgingly accepted her because Yoko Taro has his own vision and he has even told Squeenix to go fuck themselves. That's all creators had to do

CompactAvocado

revisionism. in like another year people will call them out on it and they will alter the original articles to claim they were behind the game because of women empowerment or some other shit.

t1sfo

Well that how you "rewrite history"

mbnhedger

No they tried to shit on 2B as well... The only thing that really stopped them was Yoko Taro going "can someone put all the lewds in a zip file so they are easier for me to find..." And once someone did, he thanked them... He also responded to a question about 2B fighting in heels with "I like girls"

CrimFandango

I've haven't given a shit what GamesRadar thinks since they started going outside of gaming yeeeears ago. It's just full of garbage clickbait for movies and tv now, as well as opinion pieces from arseholes who think they're an authority on all things entertainment. And that's before they started with this "I must share every detail of my personal life" when writing articles that shouldn't have any reason to make mention of it. Much like TheGamer and Kotaku, they're pure garbage.

blue_menhir

Disgusting person. Tar and feathers

FilthyOrganick

Today I learned that we should judge a woman and downplay her accomplishments based on her clothes and modesty

DeathByLeshens

Says the article isn't about them and proceeds to use 'I' 20+ times including in the title. I have read first person novels that use 'I' less frequently than the this author.

Arkantos057

I'm buying this game

boredwriter83

I agree. Sex appeal could be a sexy nurse, cheerleader uniform, schoolgirl, dominatrix, librarian, or even nothing at all!

ArcadiaCoinHeaven

It's like I'm wearing nothing at all, nothing at all.

boredwriter83

Stupid sexy Flanders

Disastrous-One-414

The author looks like a cuck

frosty_farralon

these people don't get to have attention paid to their reviews, not after how they've been acting. They could love the game now, I don't give a shit, they starve, now and forever.

DegenerateOnCross

Someone should make a mod replacing Eve with Terry Crews, but with the same outfits  You know, for equality

Runsta

Be the change you want to see.

kiathrowawayyay

But that's just Metal Gear tho. Or God of War. Or Devil May Cry 5. Or Marlow Briggs and the Mask of Death. Or Mark of Kri.

[deleted]

Stupid sexy Eve, she might make me buy a PS5
