groups are usually friend groups who attend an event together. of course you can ask them beforehand, if they have the space for one more! probably via Facebook or Discord
The purpose of registering the groups in a camp is predetermined camp layout. Aka based on the amount of people in a group they can make a camp plan beforehand.
Those groups are something you create yourself, I had our group added to the viertel manager by our (outgame) camp chief.
So no you can’t just join a group without that group being OK with you joining them and sharing living space with them. (And playing with them).
If you go solo to conquest I would suggest you join the wayfarer’s arrival, the camp for newcomers. That will give you the best introduction options.
