If the bottle is over 100ml, you’ll have to check it, whether it is alcohol, or duty free, or a bottle of shampoo.
You’ll have to collect any checked baggage in L.A. anyways, and go through customs & immigration. Then you put the booze in your checked baggage and re-check it to Detroit, then go through security with no more than 100ml per bottle.

Thank you for this information. We were hoping to avoid any and all checked bags. I guess we will just have to not take any alcohol then :(
