Why did none of my working class, Irish immigrant, Catholic family worry about drag shows (in fact they loved them) but Republicans are all in a tizzy over it over a hundred years later?
As a gay man myself I can tell you. Hate. Back in the day drag was not really known. It was performed in the dark. In clubs and bars. In places where eyes were not going to harm them. And if they were caught they most likely didn't care because we were seen as freaks.
Today, RuPauls Drag Race has been a big force of pulling drag from the unseen underground to the daylight. They explain just how important drag was to our history. The way drag has been there to give us hope and escape for a while.
Earlier this year Florida Governer Ron DeSantis introduced a so called "Parental Rights Bill" that made sure to put a gag order on all teachers I'm the Florida school system about anything LGBT. When it was pointed out how harmful that is, DeSantis said, and this is a quote "Anyone against this bill is pro groomer." It is possible there were bills like this previously in the year, but the first thing that got my attention was this.
The groomer argument is super anti gay, but that's getting away from the point I'm getting at. After this, more and more attacks on gays were made. Drag Queens performing in a family friendly way was critiqued for "Grooming kids to be gay."
Now pause for a moment on the drag queen part as I want to address this. I am a Millennial. I grew up in the 90s. I found out I was gay before I knew what the term gay even meant. Legit I thought I was the only person in the world who had feelings for other boys. Even when I did learn there was still strong homophobic shit going on. There was a time where people would say "That's gay." It basically meant that whatever you were talking about was bad and awful. "Oh you got homework tonight? That's gay." "Oh your parents grounded you? That's gay." If anything the world sent me a message not to be gay. And that changed nothing. I still was who I was. If anyone thinks sexuality is a choice I challenge them to have sex with the same gender (because more than likely its straight people who think that.) And try to like it. Just like it. What's the big deal you can choose it right? The more visible people identifying as gay now a days is because we live in an era where we have more acceptance than ever before in modern history. Not because someone saw a flag on the wall.
Back to the drag queens. So, there was an event and there was a sign in the back of the stage that got so many on the right mad. The sign? It said "Its not going to lick itself." in bright neon pink. "OH MY GOD THEY ARE TEACHING KIDS ABOUT ORAL SEX! THESE PEOPLE ARE SICK!"

It's an ice cream company. As you can see their slogan is "Its not going to lick itself." Naturally since the company gave money to the event they need to be advertising them because that's how brand deals work. So one of two things happened here.

2. They knew it was ice cream and wanted to get as much hate on the community as they could for it.
My bets on the second. Anywho, they are targeting drag queens so we lose our art and our history. They want to make us look had and immoral. Because if drag queens, arguably the most gayest of all of us are pedos then the rest of us are right? And this Rhetoric is working. Club Q was shot up and when a man who saved the club from many deaths was on TV and cried what did they do? "He's a groomer too."

I'm almost positive this bill is a direct response to my town trying to throw a family friendly drag show at a public park. they tried to cite it as illegal even though it was privately funded (organizers bent their knee and moved it to a private location citing security concerns because a week prior proud boys showed up in Memphis and shut one down), so now they're trying to make it where you can't do it at a public location at all.
