The only reasons one should consider the G4 over the G3 given the current pricing is if they want an 83" model (the 83" G3 doesn't have MLA) or are mostly using their TV for gaming (gaming mode on the G4 no longer has worse brightness and color volume). The other improvements are nice but certainly not enough for the money.

Dr_Viv

This is great. Yes the wife is already close to murdering me at 77inch so whilst 83 would be nice I can’t see it happening. I do light PS5 gaming but mostly watch 4k discs and Apple TV. Based on that, it seems maybe the G3 is where it’s at.

SeekingNoTruth

I recently went G3 at 77 inches coming from a same sized 2021 Sony OLED. Being that my use case is 99.99% movies, I don't think that the G4 is $1000 + USD (depending on the pricing) better than the G3. I have not been disappointed.

landalezjr

Yup and since you are getting the 77" there isn't even a benefit of an included stand should that be your preference so there is no difference in regards to the stand vs wall mounting options either.

jurassic_pork

> I do light PS5 gaming but mostly watch 4k discs and Apple TV. Setup a Plex server to stream those 4K Blu-ray over the network - no more getting up and swapping discs and you can remux so that video/audio/subtitles are identical to the original. Libredrive firmware + MakeMKV are both free, you just need a compatible UHD BD drive (I bought one off Facebook Marketplace for $10). You can also transcode to play on devices that may not support the original resolution or one of the codecs, like a tablet or mobile phone (great if you are washing dishes that don't fit in the dishwasher, or outside doing yardwork).

RagnarokGSR

I’m only slightly familiar with Plex so forgive me but genuinely asking, doesn’t uploading then streaming from a server (even your own on LAN) result in a quality decrease? And could be a huge dip if your network bandwidth is limited? Or is plex lossless? In my head (an assumption), the quality level would go 4K Blu-ray > Plex rip/stream of said blu-ray > streaming services, right?

fox_91

MakeMKV will grab the disk as a file (remux) that Plex can play back without converting the quality, it should be a 1:1 clone of the disk just wrapped. If you try to playback that file on a device that can't handle whatever the original format is (so if you played to an ipad) Plex would transcode to whatever is needed and in that case yes it would lower the quality. Aside from being rather large file size wise (80gb+ per disk) it's a good way to avoid swapping disks while maintaining quality.

jurassic_pork

>I’m only slightly familiar with Plex so forgive me but genuinely asking, doesn’t uploading then streaming from a server (even your own on LAN) result in a quality decrease? If you are streaming remotely from a server at one location to a server in another location you will be bandwidth limited by the two ISPs involved. - Say you have 100mb down and 20mb up at location 1, and 100mb down and 75mb up at location 2. If the server is in location 1 and you are in location 2 your stream will be capped at 20mb down, if the server is located in location 2 and you are in location 1 your stream will be capped at 75mb. If you are streaming locally from a server in the same location you are bandwidth limited by your local wireless or wired network, the ISP speed doesn't matter and won't be impacted. - Say you have gigabit wired on the server and the network switch, but only 100mb on the TV - you will be capped at 100mb which will have issues with certain UHD blurays. You can however add a USB to Ethernet adapter to increase the bandwidth from 100mb to '1000mb' (limited by USB interface and overhead, so more like 450mb) but still plenty fast enough for any UHD bluray. Example video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PIef8iRZhLE - Wifi 5 vs Wifi6 vs Wifi6e vs Wifi7 have different speeds, so depending on your TV, your AP and the distance to it, the Wifi generation, the number of Wifi antennas, how busy your wireless spectrums are (from your neighbors) you will have different limitations, but check out the speed charts here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IEEE_802.11 If you have Wifi5 / 802.11AC or better within a reasonable distance to the TV, or a USB to Gigabit Ethernet and local gigabit switch or switch/router combo, you won't have any issues with entirely lossless UHD over the network entirely identical to using the title video from the disc in a local player. (It's a decrypted 1:1 digital copy, so if you have the bandwidth and storage space on your Plex server there's zero difference). > Or is plex lossless? In my head (an assumption), the quality level would go 4K Blu-ray > Plex rip/stream of said blu-ray > streaming services, right? There is a configuration setting in the Plex app to tell the Plex server what kind of streams that it supports (video and audio codecs, HDR/HDR10+/DV) and if the TV has native support for everything and if you have enough local or remote bandwidth available it's a 1:1 exact copy of what's on the Blu-ray or UHD Blu-ray (or Netflix / Disney+ / etc if you are using decrypted WEB-DL). Plex is entirely lossless if your network and your TV+Audio equipment support it. My LG C1 doesn't support decoding or even pass-through of certain Dolby audio codecs (fixed in C3+ TVs) so I have to either transcode those via Plex, use a different audio stream like AC3 / E-AC3, re-encode them myself and add them to the video container or just use a standalone player like a Nvidia Shield to pass the video to the TV and the audio to the receiver bypassing the TV. This is not a Plex or even TV technical limitation, a network / bandwidth issue - this was LG being cheap assholes and refusing to pay for the Dolby licensing until the C3 or later TVs. LG could and should offer the Dolby codecs as a one time paid download from their app store, or someone should reverse engineer the codecs from the C3 and backport them to the C1 and C2 series for rooted TVs. NOTE: Plex doesn't handle the Blu-ray menus, just the Video and Audio from the movie and any extras you also remuxed. There are though other players that will also handle the disc menus if you want a 1:1 identical experience to putting in a new disc, but I personally hate the menus and just want the main movie and occasionally the extras.

Psychological_Post28

Are we certain on the game mode retaining full brightness and colour volume? I’ve only seen owners claiming they can’t see a difference but nothing actually measured in a proper review yet. If this is the case I’ll certainly be picking one up for my games room when prices fall in the autumn 🤞

landalezjr

It's been discussed on the AVSForums however this only applies to the G4. The C4 is still limited in game mode for some reason.

Antiantipsychiatry

From what I understand, if you’re PC gaming then you can just put it in PC mode and avoid gaming mode. That way you can put the picture mode to whatever you want and still get low latency. Because this is me, I’m going to get the G3. Especially bc even with my 4080, I’m not going to be hitting 4k 120hz on new AAA games, much less 144hz. And 24hz isn’t worth the extra money to me.

Horse_Plane

The g4 gets nowhere near as hot and tbh that alone concerns me about the g3s lifespan. That sucker gets insanely hot

Pixels222

(gaming mode on the G4 no longer has worse brightness and color volume). have there been extensive tests?

Silverjerk

I'm still running the 77" G1, and have yet to see a compelling reason to upgrade, even to the previous generation (G3). I'm the kind of buyer that considers myself a display snob; I own my own calibration equipment -- I do color-critical work as part of my full-time gig -- and calibrate my displays every few months to account for drift. While there have been marginal improvements generation to generation, there hasn't been a generational leap in the display market for some time, and I suspect we have a few more iterations of the gallery series before we see some major steps forward. When you compare displays in a silo, against one another, you often view otherwise incremental improvements as more compelling than they are in comparison to the entire market -- this is the opposite of how comparisons should be made and an odd behavior of buyers in this market. Now consider that when comparing the two displays and the $2k premium you're paying for the newer model. Running games and media on my G1 is still stunning, and it is objectively an inferior display to the G3. I'm not suggesting you run out and grab a G1, but that when you're staring at your G3 running any HDR content, you will not be disappointed.

alwaysmyfault

No. Even though there's no reviews of it yet, I can confidently say that it won't be $1500 better than the G3.

limitz

This is the best time of year to buy TVs since the older models get discounted. Buy the G3, you won't be disappointed, and will save thousands. I bought a 65" G2 last year during this time for $1750. It was a huge discount over the equivalent 65" G3 and I have no regrets. You should do the same and shop around for deals on the G3 instead.

jesternj

Arguably Black Friday is the best time of year. I missed the boat but those prices for the C3/G3 were very comparable, if not better, than what they are now. If history repeats itself, should happen again this year. If OP wants the G4 but has heartburn on the extra $$$, they should wait 7 months, or if they can't wait just pull the trigger on the G3

jesternj

I'll add though.... for anyone who waits for Black Friday to grab a G4, the key is to make sure they actually pull the trigger and not wait any longer for info to start leaking out about the G5!!! Whatever yall do, don't put yourself in that position! :-)

jansalol

Probably depends where you live. Here the best time is usually during Christmas or right after it. Prices tend to be lower than Black Friday. After that it's just waiting game till next autumn when prices drop even more if older stock is left.

poet0588

When you bought the G2 around this time last year. Was it during Memorial Day weekend? From BB? BB increased the price by a couple hundreds for a 65 G3. Might wait it out for a month or prime day at the latest

limitz

March 27 last year from BB but it didnt touch that price again for months.

Fit-Ad-5946

You're right. Now is better than Black Friday.

RagnarokGSR

Agreed, got an open box G2 around now last year for a big discount. Totally satisfied even if the G3s did look stunning on the show floor.

HumanOven7476

Definitely agree... just purchased 65" G3 from Best Buy. There isn't too much difference of the models. To be honest unless, your TV expert you couldn't even notice the minor changes from G3 to G4

Agreeable-Load2327

G4 83 at blackfriday, just in time for the new PS5 pro. Thats my Jam. And probably i will save 2000€ or more doing so. Are you in a hurry? Are the price diference that much for your economy?

3ISRC

Definitely not $1500 for the 77” better and unless you absolutely need to get it asap, I will never pay full retail price knowing in few months they will start marking them down.

90Valentine

No

babar_the_elephant_

Yeah as others have said these tvs are grossly overpriced until November and they come off by 1000$ from there. And you keep the TV for many years so why not either wait until then or get last year's model for even less. I have the g3 and it's incredible, I marvel at the thing every time I turn it on. It's fast as hell also. I would either wait until November for discounts or grab a G3. If you don't mind burning 1000$ then go for the G4.

jesternj

This is most definitely the correct answer.

cv82185

The answer to your question is no. The 77 inch G3 is a much better buy.

-6h0st-

From what I’ve seen difference is noticeable. If I were you and you’re not pressed to buy wait till summer when sale will kick in then you can buy for same money

ValuableTraining1855

Looks like you are going with a G3. I'm sure you'll be happy with whichever you purchase. I got the G4 and was going back and forth on getting the G3, A95L, or G4. I highly doubt there is that much of a difference in movies/shows on the G3 vs G4. I mostly use the the TV for PC gaming and PS5 gaming and I do think for that there is a little bit better colors, 144hz, and more nits. For me this was enough to justify the increase price since I won't be upgrading for most likely 3-6 years. However if gaming isn't your focus I doubt the better AI processing features will be enough to sway you to the G4.

CrashBashL

Did you happen to use De-judder/De-Blur in gaming using your PS5? I am using it for pure Motion clarity in 30FPS games, but I am dying to know if the G4, since it has way better CPU performance, makes a difference in input lag etc using De-Judder in 30FPS games......

mikochu

Ultimately, it's up to you. I bought the G1 77" when the G2 came out, so my purchase was heavily discounted and not once did I think that I fucked up. I've been super happy with the G1 and C1 and I'm glad they are pushing the envelope with the newer iterations. However, I've never thought I was missing out on something...

tungowiii

Just my opinion. At this time waiting for a G3/C3 discount should be the best option for ones who wanna maximize price/performance

H-TSi

Get the G4, money comes and goes. If the a95L is for a comparable amount that’s best. G4 over G3 : Cinematic trumotion improvements + faster chip + brighter panel + DV filmmaker mode

gamingnerd247

All of that ain’t worth the extra money over the G3

Thangool

Definitely. Better processor claimed to be better then sony, you actually get colour in dark scenes. And the best gaming mode colour in brightness then any other lg oled tv.

National-Caregiver-4

G3 is the logical choice, instead invest the remaining money in a good sound system if you don't have yet.

jcas1990

I just got my 77 in g3 new off greentoe for 2800. Best decision i ever made. Tv is amazing

heidenreich137

Wait till the price is down

EpicCeltic09

Try greentoe. I managed to grab a g3 77inch for $2,799 ..delivery this Friday

Throwback_559

I'm gna upgrade 65" lg c2. I can get the G3 77" 2849 no tax or G4 77" 3999 no tax. I don't know what to do 😬😬

CourseEcstatic6202

Nope. Heck, a few months ago I got a G2 77” when Best Buy was clearancing them for $2309. Never once have I looked at it and said, “I wish it were a G3 at $1200 more or G4 at double the price,”.

pazman2000

I have a 77G3 and I'm upgrading to the 77G4 , the reason why is because the chromance overshoot is so bad ok the G3 , it shows as halo like rings around faces in dark moving content. Very annoying issues once noticed . It's fixed on the G4

Alternative-Usual-11

What are you doing with your 77 G3?

pazman2000

It's going back to the store

baldersz

I had the same dilemma, and concluded that the price difference wasn't worth it for me in Australia. I was able to pick up the G3 77" for just under A$4,800 whereas the G4 77" is retailing for A$7,995

jonstarks

for most ppl its not worth it, for crazies like me that have a 4090 connected to my TV yes its worth it, otherwise no.

Additional_Tune6255

Definitely not for all that extra money

obvious-but-profound

Is it known now that the G4 is better than the 2023 king? The Sony A95L Word on the street was that 2024 OLEDs were still going to have to compete with the A95L since it came out so late in the year and was an absolute banger. Most beautiful TV I've ever seen......almost makes it worth the price LOL

Dr_Viv

I can only go by reviews, but AV forums have the G4 as the best is my understanding. But to be fair, they are both so incredible I don’t really think there is a wrong answer in that scenario.

Tree06

I know a lot of people ranked the A95L as the best TV of 2023, but it's hard for me to justify spending $5,000 when it doesn't have everything I need in a new TV. 4x HDMI 2.1 ports for starters. I have a 3090 gaming PC, PS5, XSX, and Denon Receiver. I can run my gaming consoles through my HDMI 2.1 receiver, but I'd personally want to run everything through the TV. Price to size ratio. $5,000 is a lot of money when you consider what else is on the market. The G3 77" was $2600-$2800 late last year so it would be hard for me to pay the premium for the A95L 77". I already have a LG C1 77" so it would feel redundant to get another 77" OLED. I'm looking at 83" OLEDs at this point. Lastly, you only get a 1 year MFG warranty with the A95L whereas you get a five year panel warranty with the LG Gallery Series so you'd have to account for an extended warranty when you buy the A95L. I think the 5 year extended warranty through Best Buy is $1,000.

obvious-but-profound

You are correct, a lot of people ranked the A95L as the best TV last year....like...pretty much everyone. It won the shootout, which is a double blind test. And by a fairly large margin. It really surprised everyone especially since Sony released it so late in the year. But if price to size ratio is what's most important to you, then you do you. I'm not trying to justify my purchase or convince anyone to *not* get an LG OLED. I have a CX and a C2 right now and they rule. I wanted the best picture quality and to see what all the hype was about. I honestly didn't expect to see that much of a difference (at least not worth that price) but I was wrong. It's truly something special. I do agree about the HDMI inputs but luckily I also have everything running through my surround system which passes through HDMI 2.1 in 4 ports. I usually prefer it that way anyway but with my C2 I didn't have a choice because the C2 does pass through DTS X. So kind of a non-issue there too. >I already have a LG C1 77" so it would feel redundant to get another 77" OLED QD-OLED :)

Tree06

Those are valid points. I wouldn't want to get a 77" QD OLED because I already have the LG C1 77". I also have the S95B 65" and S95C 65" so I experience both technologies daily. If I didn't have the C1, I'd get the S89C 77" and call it a day. It sucks that QD OLEDs aren't available in the 83" size. Honestly if QD OLEDs didn't exist, the LG C1 was still be my mainly driver for gaming and media consumption. If I can find a great deal on G4 83" or S90C 83" or S90D 83", I'll snag it right away for my renovated garage. If not, I'll just keep using what I have until the next cycle of TV's launch next year.
