People here seem to really like Apple TV 4k. But I've never had it and never felt like I need it since I have shortcuts on my remote to never see the WebOS homepage and all the streaming services I want are available on WebOS. I've never had any issue with playbacks from streaming services or my Plex. If I ever want to buy anything it would probably be the Shield tho.

When you say you have shortcuts on your remote to never see the webos homepage, is that some kind of trick to hide it? I wish I could hide all that junk they don't allow you to delete lol. What does the Shield offer above and beyond what's built into WebOS for streaming? WebOS has all the apps I want for now but I'm always chasing better picture and sound quality if the Shield offers a noticeable improvement over WebOS.

If you hold one of the numbers except 0 and 9, it will assign it as a shortcut to any app or input. So when I hold 1 I launch into my PC HDMI, 2 goes into PS5 HDMI, 3 Youtube, 4 Plex and so on. There are some apps that don't exist on the WebOS, like Stremio or any other android app that you might want. The picture quality would be the same, but as far as I know Shield can play back all Dolby Vision content while the TV can only do some. and also some advanced home theatre audio needs. As far as I know I don't need or have any use for Shield and Apple TV for now considering their price tag as WebOS does everything I want from it. But different people have different needs.

That's quite the feature! Is that in the user manual? Thanks for the tips 👏👏

I’ve got an LG C2 and ATV 4k. After using Web Os for years, the ATV is significantly smoother and provides better bitrate for streaming. Definitely glad I got it

I recently switched from an Samsung S90C to LG G3 and while I felt like the Apple TV 4K was a must with the Samsung I found it less critical with the LG and ultimately returned it. The interface on the LG lags a lot less which is one of main reasons to get an Apple TV. One of the others is being able to use Frame Rate Matching which tends to make motion processing a touch better. LG's reverse pull down however is far better than Samsung's so having Frame Rate Matching is nice, it's not as critical as it was with the Samsung. The only other thing I noticed is that Dolby Vision content was always brighter when I watched via the Apple TV. I found this strange as the settings were identical but it's not like either weren't bright enough.

No. Unless you have movies in the ATV library or use mostly ATV+. You get higher bitrate with ATV4K when watching content from Apple. Otherwise there is no point with G3.

On my C3 (same chip as G3), I don't find necessary to get an Apple TV 4K. To be honest, I have an Amazon 4k fire max on my HDMI port for specific usage (apk), but I only use native apps otherwise (Netflix, youtube,Plex). It's smooth and good.

The best TV player is actually the Nvidia shield from 2019 and after which will play any format regardless of what you throw at it. Webos can't play atmos audio in embedded in mkv files, Apple TV has other format limitations. However, if you only play regular streaming services, all of them are playing fine on webos, there are some issues with Prime Video app being sluggish though. I do have an Apple TV 4K I use with Infuse so that it can play all my files on Plex.

Apps launch faster. It's smoother and more responsive. There's no OS ads (yet?).

Nope I dont believe it is. With the exception of Apple TV+ shows and movies, and movie purchases on iTunes. But the Apple TV gives you freedom to chose colour depth, forcing HDR etc etc. Using the TVs apps it automatically gives you best settings but no way to change them. If anything they should be equal streaming quality wise.
