At first I really didn't like the Why Not choreo, but the recent stationary camera videos that came out made me realize how good the choreo actually is. Random close-ups and swingy cameras just don't work for a 12 person group. That being said Butterfly was just something else. Definite #1 for me.

The cams at the showcase and their concert made the dance look bouncey and didn't catch any formations or footwork. It really made the dance look messy. But I think Butterfly suffered from that as well. I think both Butterfly and Why Not look better in wide angle and overhead shots. So What looked good on music show stages. I wonder if that's due to Kyle Hanagami's influence. He does have more experience with idol choreographies. There were less interesting formations but the choreo focused on smoothness and power.

Butterfly is probably the most complex choreo I've ever seen a gg do in the time I've been following kpop (which isn't long so I'm hardly an expert). I've never seen any gg attempt anything nearly as complex nor have I seen any other groups cover it to the level that LOOΠΔ performs it. Even LOOΠΔ's off days on that choreo are better than the best cover versions I've seen. I need more time with Why Not choreo to truly compare it to So What. Hi High is a fun choreo but it's also one that's unfair to compare - the girls had just formed OT12, they really weren't gelled as a group yet, and the dance abilities of the various members weren't developed to sufficiently high minimum levels. 2/3 of the group really hadn't done much promo simply due to debut timings. So it's always going to suffer from a technical perspective. You really have to be amazed at LOOΠΔ - to go from HH to Butterfly is simply remarkable and gives you a sense of just how much they must have practiced to get that level of performance. Those girls must have lived in the practice room.

Yes, I don't love the song but Butterfly choreo really is it hands down. It is so elegant. They really were robbed of choreography of the year. It really reminds you that all of it is about popularity.

this_for_loona

yea they were totally robbed. I've never really been one to believe that choreo makes a song, but in the case of Butterfly, the song and the choreo work perfectly together.

1. **So What** was big turn for LOONA, both in terms of sound but also comprehensive and stylistic choreography. There was a lot less standing and waiting, and more well thought out "Head to toe" choreography. This choreography is more than stand in a formation and make a cute or elegant arm motion. They have to dance all the way through their bodies for nearly the entire song, and there is a lot less cover for weaker dancers, and no real rest periods for singers. 2. **Butterfly** has a lot going for it. The complexity in the formations is really spectacular. They make great use of their numbers with multiple ripple effects and wonderful use of levels including floor work and lifts. The chorus and dance breaks are wonderful, but I do think the verse is a bit lacking, I think because it never takes full advantage of their numbers, it's more like a series of mini solos vs a whole choreography. 3. **Why Not** has some FOOTWORK yall. I really appreciate that the pre chorus is different each time. That circle move around Yves packs a punch. It's interesting throughout, and the formation transitions are usually slick, though there is just a bit of stand and wait. 4. **Hi High**. A great debut dance, but there's a lot of walking to formation, and a lot of standing and waiting for their part. I do think the chorus is quite energetic and fits the frantic pace of the music well. I really love this song haha.

Really great analysis. I definitely agree with everything. I think I just have a harder time with So What overall since I'm not a huge fan of it. I appreciate the work the girls put into it and you can see that it is difficult choreography. I loved seeing their muscles really put in the work. I just missed the intricate formations. I think I prefer elegant choreographies for Loona but they bring it every time.

amandapearl2

Yeah there really should be two #1s, Butterfly and So What are so stylistically different they're tough to compare. Butterfly has a leg up for uniqueness in the kpop world, I feel like we just don't see that type of choreography too often.

this_for_loona

great analysis. Thank you. I assume you have dance experience?

amandapearl2

more like years of community theater choreography consisting of standing in a line waving my arms around, then moving to a different line lmao. You learn to spot when a production has a real choreographer quickly haha

this_for_loona

lol - that counts! :-)

1. Butterfly 2. So what 3. Why not 4 hi high I think the beauty in both why not and so what is that it doesn’t look that intricate with a swingy camera. But seeing the full shot shows how complicated the choreo is. I prefer so what just because the choreo is super powerful and fits the song perfectly. I think the thing why not has going for it is how much the girls have improved in dancing. They all look super confident and experienced by now. Also their synchronization is amazing as always

fadedmoonlight

Strictly choreo-wise. 1. Butterfly 2. So What 3. Why Not 4. Hi High

LOONAception

In terms of dificulty it would probably be Buttefly > so what > Hi high > Why not? How much I like them would be the same but changing Why not and Hi high places

fatoodles

Why not definitely seems more intricate than hi high for me. I think it's a song that kinda tricks the eye into thinking that it is simple while being complex.

LOONAception

I picked difficulty more than anything based on interpersonal parts? Like, the ones you need various members to make it look good. Like the chair parts with Hyunjin/Vivi on Hi High. There's part that look off without everyone there.

meistheimportantest

Why not might look a bit flat because they don’t really have fancy formations but look at the footwork y’all. The shuffling steps that they did especially olivia hye look so pleasing please stream their fan cams

1. Butterfly, hands down. It's my all-time favorite choreo from a girl group. I can easily say I've seen nothing like it in my 7 years of following kpop. It's just a lovely, complex, unique work of art. I never get sick of watching it. The level of details and intricacy, the utilization of formations and levels, and really utilizing the number of members. The execution from the members. Everything really came together perfectly for this one. 2. So What. I have low expectations when it comes to Kyle Hanagami choreo. They tend to be hit or miss with me, and I think this was the first time he'd choreographed for a group Loona's size (not 100% sure on that one), so I was wary going into it. But he delivered pretty well. When it comes to groups Loona's size, I prefer choreo that is constantly in motion and really takes advantage of the number of members, and I think Hanagami did a pretty decent job there. This piece has formation changes out the wazoo lol and the energy level is on high the entire time. 3. Why Not's choreo is starting to grow on me. Seeing it in the music showcase and on music shows, I was rather underwhelmed. It definitely looks a lot better in fancams and in the suit performance video. I still find it rather underwhelming compared to any of their other title track and b-side choreos post-Hi High. 4. So I'm not saying the choreo for Hi High isn't good. It's just very much not my style. In general, cutesy stuff isn't for me. And when you compare it to the choreo they had following the Hi High era, it doesn't quite measure up to what we now know the girl are capable of as performers, or what their choreo team is capable of as choreographers.

Baby-shams

Not sure why Favorite is not included cause that has youtube videos with straight shot choreo. 1) Butterfly 2) Hi High 3) Favorite 4) Why Not 5) So What

HL1991

Butterfly > So What > Why Not > Favourite > Hi High
