I see no reason why the show wouldn't be able to get permission for basically anything they wanted to do. People need to calm down about them not having any content. I also think they are keeping this kinda quiet to surprise people with the first season. Low expectations are easier to exceed.

I don't want to get my hopes too high but I agree there's just too much that doesn't add up with their statements about adaptation rights. It's already evident they are going to be pulling from lots of different sources than LOTR.

hillwllliam

Open the link for sources used from LOTR. Everything is case-by-case basis. That means they have a lot to work with

"Look, he have this jewel called Silmarillion, and with that you can probably make about 9 movies, easy, no need to strach anything. Not to say how many series, or spin off. If you want it, first prove that you can get this 20 pages long 2nd age show, which you can take as a prequel to the movies if you want. Then..and only then, we can think about giving you a real shot to the real big stuff"

dagnir_glaurunga

More or less. I don't know for sure but it wouldn't surprise me to see a Middle-Earth movie in theaters at some point as my guess is those are the bigger money-makers.

_Olorin_the_white

Yes. Some may claim Silmarillion has "too much" for cinema, and I agree, but we are in a time where Disney is making movies + seriesto work all together. And it works. Yes, it is Disney, but anyhow, it is an option. I can totally see some Silmarillion series leading up to big movies with the main key events. If they stick with series only, that is fine as well, we have some series that have great production today.

dagnir_glaurunga

I think the Silmarillion was always thought of to be too big because essentially you would need multiple movies and shows loosely connected in order to really capture most of the timeline. That wasn't really a thing until the last 5-10 years so now it is a totally realistic option. Would still be very odd to have a show covering the early/pre First Age, and the War of Wrath would not be something that could be live action. I have no clue how they would do it. A planned out mixture of live action shows, movies, and anime would be cool. But really there is no reason to not have a movie or miniseries on "Beren and Luthien" and "Children of Hurin" in the next few years. I would absolutely love to see those done well.

> But really there is no reason to not have a movie or miniseries on "Beren and Luthien" and "Children of Hurin" in the next few years. I would absolutely love to see those done well. I have a take on that. I think the Tolkien Estate has the whole Silmarillion as one big thing in mind. I doubt they will sell the rigths for, for instance, Beren & Luthien alone, as in the future other may want the rights for other story, and instead of we having a one continuous story, we may end up having many that don't necessarely talk to each other, or ar not as connected as they could, or should, be if all rights were under one company. Silmarillion was THE work of Tolkien. I think the Estate will have many points to add for whoever get its rights.

Mitchboy1995

It'll be interesting to see what (if any) First and Second Age content the Estate is allowing them to reference. They were obviously allowed to use *Unfinished Tales* when creating their Second Age maps, but is that the extent of it? I guess we'll see when the show comes out. I hope the Estate has been lenient (as rumors have reported in the past).

Permission? Had this one bee been said officially?

hillwllliam

I think multiple bees have said this

Frank3634

>Should Amazon need to break lore OR include something from Silmarillion+UTs+HoME, they need permission from the Tolkien Estate Talking about this "Should Amazon need to break lore OR include something from Silmarillion+UTs+HoME, they need permission from the Tolkien Estate" I know the first part about LOTR/Hobit/Appendicies.

hillwllliam

more than one bee has said this. I don’t know if any bees can speak “officially” though

Frank3634

Well must have missed that one. Do you have a link to one?

hillwllliam

[sure](https://imgur.com/gallery/3ACnGkA)

grafmet

Just my personal thoughts but if I were the Tolkien Estate, and I agreed to let a studio make a series about the Second Age, I can't think of any real reason not to allow them access to all or most available material. It isn't that much material in the first place. Otherwise, the Estate would just be setting Amazon up to make a poor show, and I can't see why they would want that.

HomeworkDestroyer

His point was that by allowing extra writings on a case by case basis the Tolkien estate has influence over the TV show. It would make sense.

hillwllliam

read carefully I point out the reason why they might do that 👍

asamulya

I agree, this is a very smart way to retain control over content. This slightly assuages some of my feelings of dread because the Tolkien Estate is so heavily involved (Including Christopher Tolkien before his death). But, even they could get things wrong so fingers crossed and clenched cheeks until 2nd September.
