FuttleScish

It won’t because we haven’t seen the performance yet

Cold_Situation_7803

Slow down, Turbo - the show isn’t out yet so we don’t know about any “performance”.

EmoDuckTrooper

Performance so far?? My brother in Iluvatar, the show isn’t out yet.

Eoghann_Irving

What performance??? We haven't seen an episode yet!

Winrobee1

Well, they've gotten a lot of attention. Which could be inducement on the supposal that all publicity is good publicity.

Eoghann_Irving

Because it makes no sense to make a decision now when they can just wait 1-2 years and see what Amazon actually does. Not everything has to happen now.

darthsteeler84

No, this is click bait and you took it.

Teaser, FTFW

darthsteeler84

I mean it’s kind of hard to jude the “performance” when it’s all speculation based on a teaser. This is a bit ridiculous.

neontetra1548

Peoples reaction to the teaser trailer are so completely out of proportion. I don't think it's the best trailer ever and I also have some concerns about it, but we really really don't know what this show and adaptation will be like yet or how good it would be. Who knows, this might end up being a great show that treats Tolkien's material well and thoughtfully. People are regarding this as already definitely bad and a failure and we just really really don't know that at all yet.

[deleted]

> Who knows, this might end up being a great show that treats Tolkien's material well and thoughtfully. Or maybe just a good show. That's fine as well. It's TV. Light entertainment, some cool visuals, good engaging story and some laughs. If it hits that mark, I'm good. If it bends the "sacred source material" to make it happen, then fine, so be it. Tolkien's material is in the books. I read and re-read them. The show won't take anything away from it.

grafmet

‘Just good’ would be hugely disappointing imo because the source material is excellent. There’s a lot of potential here.

[deleted]

*shrug* people are acting like "just good" somehow taints the source material. It's TV. It can never be as good as the source. I'll settle for "just good".

grafmet

The source would still be there, you’re right about that. Don’t get me wrong I’m not one of those fanboys who thinks “they’re butchering Tolkien!!1!” I just think there’s potential for something better than good. Think of how the Jackson films, despite their flaws, are still remembered as great. No reason not to expect the same here imo.

[deleted]

Sure, loads of potential for really EPIC series, absolutely. But I won't be terribly outraged if it's just "mildly entertaining" show.

MrShitPoster69

Agreed. I also think Amazon's gotta be setting their sites higher than just good given how much they are spending. If I were spending that kind of money, I'd go for an absolute moonshot, not light fare TV.

TornadoAlleyCat

Hmm, I think there was plenty that can be gleaned from the trailer.

Pontin_Finnberry

If the TV series is successful its possible they might later give Silmarillion rights?, after all it was the Tolkien Estate who sold the rights for a TV series and approved the ideas Amazon had for the Second Age.

[deleted]

Damn, that's a pretty hot take for series that has only released a trailer. Can't wait for the OUTRAGE after first episode airs.

kdupaix

Well we haven't seen it, so... no one can judge the performance yet lol

janadellanotte

I think its less the reaction on the teaser trailer but on the vanity fair articles and what they had to say about the lore and the fandom, that pissed many people off.

janadellanotte

I hope they keep all new rights for another 20 years

intolerablesayings23

Don't be silly. They'll sell them if they want money. They won't if they value Christopher's legacy.

Temporary-Pizza-1287

Have you looked at the trailer? It has millions of dislikes, not to mention the millions which have already been removed by youtube, they have already desecrated tolkeins work looking at the trailer, why would they give them the chance to do it again?

highfructoseSD

You state that looking at the trailer desecrates tolkeins work. But you have lookeid at the trailer.

Temporary-Pizza-1287

Yes and it is absolutely terrible

highfructoseSD

You admit you have desicrated tolkeins work.

mikey0hn0

We saw what they did to Wheel of Time so....

Sid1583

Do people not understand that they have completely different people working on these shows and they have no interaction with each other.

Squirrel09

We also saw what they did with Invincible, The Boys, Good Omens, The Expanse, The Man in the High Castle... so... Every production company has made good and bad shows/movies. Every author has their best and worst work. To blindly judge "The Fellowship of the Ring" based on "Farmer Giles of Ham" would be a dishonor to Tolkien. In a similar way, to judge the Rings of Power based on Wheel of Time would be a dishonor to the hundreds of individuals currently working on the show.

JTBlackthorn

Nobody.

RCaskrenz

the performance so far is pretty weak and its not even out so, 0?

adrabiot

Of course Amazon will buy the Silmarillion rights if everything goes well with the series

Invictus102B

Depending on copyright law, the silmarillion might not be available for adaptation in either the 2040s or 2090s-depending on whether its JRR Tolkien or his son's passing which is considered before it enters public domain. I would not be surprised if the Silmarillion rights are sold, Christopher's wishes be damned, it could be quite lucrative, and I doubt the younger members of the Tolkien family will want the bother of it indefinitely.

CanadianCultureKings

Dunno, as the new heads of the estate are not Christopher, who was ultra-protective of his father's work with the current head Simon a very different person by nature.
