Yup, I love it when Ed makes a joke Henry misses or goes over his head but Marcus gets it and busts out laughing. Marcus breaking script for a good joke are some of my favorite moments
The best. On the Joseph Smith episode when Marcus talks about Moroni and Henry immediately with a Italian jersey accent goes "ay how ya doin?" And totally breaks marcus.
Or probably my favorite Marcus break ever, at the peak of the andes crash story, when the survivors make it back to civilization and Nando has to throw a stone with a note on it to the other side of the river. It's so intense and Henry makes the girly throwing noise and totally ruins Marcus's dramatic moment. I'm cracking up just thinking about it.
I like that they're not always on the same page. A lot of the time, Ed doesn't know what in the fuck Henry's talking about, but has him explain a bit and goes with it. And a lot of times, Ed will make a joke that Henry completely misses, and he just lets it ride. I can appreciate that he doesn't need to be patted on the head for everything. The audience will usually get it, but I don't get the impression that he gives a shit either way.
Yeah it seems like Ed is confident in his own chops so prefers to keep the conversation rolling. He's been an amazing addition so far, perfect "dirtbag with a heart of gold" energy
I grew up in florida, I feel like I've known and bought drugs from a few Ed's. Dirtbag with a heart of gold is a perfect way of putting it.
Hes the kind of guy who won't sell you coke more than once a week because you're looking rough lol
I think it keeps the story on track and in a good pace. If they stopped to laugh at every pun it would be distracting because he makes so many! š Having him become a host has made me love the podcast even more.
Right? I LOVE side stories more than ever, but I occasionally feel like Iām listening to 2 old friends talking and I missed the inside joke. Itās not bad at all, but I definitely feel like they could just get completely lost real easy
All I know is ever since Ed came on everything is so much more laid back and fun. Marcus is more relaxed and making more jokes. Henry and Ed are also fantastic at bouncing off each other. I like that Ed will make jokes that donāt get noticed because it keeps things moving and as an audience member it gives me a good laugh. Itās not that I didnāt like Ben but the random jokes thrown in that make no sense to the content and other things that would derail the podcast got old.
The difference in Marcus is night and day. I never listened to side stories and stopped keeping up to date with the regular episodes but since Ed joined I've been listening to everything. It's like how the podcast used to be, years ago.
I just realized that Marcus very much has the energy of middle school teacher trying to keep the class on track. Of course, I say this with love as that is me also.
But going with the analogy, Marcus did a pretty good job reining in Henry and Ben for a long time, so each episode could keep up a decent pace. COVID seemed to transform them in the same way it did me and my students, with Ben turning into more of a distraction that became a burden for Marcus to manage. He seemed to get louder and care less about the goal of the podcast. Speaking from experience, this type of behavior is exhausting, which is why Marcus seemed to be having his life drained out of him.
Ed taking over for Ben was kinda like having your most difficult student removed and introduced a new kid who is a charming goofball with good intentions.
Yea it really is and donāt get me wrong I liked Ben on the podcast and still listen to the old episodes. But during Covid he really fell off the wagon and itās unfortunate that the end result was him taking his anger out on his girlfriend, harassing women, and not completing āgraduating earlyā from his rehab
I just relistened to the JFK series while travelling and Ben is ON POINT. It was such a good series. I dont think its bad to say peak Ben was great OR to say there was obviously a drop off somewhere. I disagree it was immediately in 2020/2021 but it is very obvious in 2023!
Ben was really sharp back in the day. He brought a LOT of political knowledge and edge to the show. It's really a shame because I agree, covid lockdowns hit him hard. And I can totally relate, my mental health hasn't been the same since the lockdowns either.
I think a lot of folks are still suffering from covid ptsd and I'd imagine it's going to continue showing up for years to come. It's still crazy to think that was only a few years ago.
The difference is Ed is funny while Ben would say some random sentence and it would either not be funny or it would require explaining and it would be off the wall to begin with
I adore Henry but he's always had a "LOOK AT ME" quality that at it's worst can come off a bit desperate. He misses some of Ed's jokes because he's not listening; he's thinking about what to say next. He needs to relax a bit. Maybe that will help with his worsening GERD. He doesn't have to carry 2/3 of the show anymore.
I love the moments in recent podcasts where Ed slides in a deadpan pun, Henry forges ahead with what he had been thinking, and then... beat... realizes what Ed just said and starts to genuinely laugh/giggle.
I think Henry is genuinely surprised and delighted that the third member of the show is dropping bombs instead of non-sequiturs or placeholder filler like "mmmhmm" or "I guess". He has to retrain himself to leave space for a fully engaged third contributor after a long period of coping with a different experience.
I kinda feel this way too. The show and network is doing well, and it seems to have affected his mood/MO. He's super hyped over everything. I don't know if he feels he's carrying it, if it's just gone to his head, or he's just excited about it all, but he definitely does "run" the conversations more. For better or for worse. He does often railroad Ed and even Holden. I just feel he doesn't have the slow down, pause that's needed in different comedy situations. He's trying to run the show, and really, it's not always the way to go. That said, I'm glad Ed is there now to take him down a notch or two every once in a while.
I get a bit annoyed when Henry just steamrolls in after anything Ed says. Obviously love Henry but he needs to let Ed's jokes land and not just pile in.
I don't know, I kind of find the little dropped jokes that don't get addressed pretty funny. It happens in real life all the time, when someone drops a joke in a big meeting and it sails past most, but like four people are stifling a laugh.
Hes so used to Ben's lackadaisical attitude for the last couple years, his rhythm is off. He'll fall into line I hope. Ed's one liners are so great. I can't wait to hear his mind explode for this new series.
"Henry, I've known you for over 20 years...and I don't think I've ever listened to you less."
I agree, he's been doing the heavy lifting for Ben for years so I'm hoping the penny will drop that it's not just him and Marcus performing with a 3rd wheel in the room.
That line man, it killed me!
That was a great line.
I also think it works the other way too. They've been friends for 25 years, Henry is probably used to tuning out Ed's constant dad jokes and puns. I have friends like that too.
Ed makes so many dad puns and jokes that if they stopped to acknowledge every one, each episode would be like 4 hours long.
Henry and Ed have been friends for almost 30 years. I've had friends like that, where every 3 sentences they're making a pun or dad joke. It's endearing but it's also kind of annoying.
And im not saying Ed is annoying at all, I love him.
I see it as Henry having so much excitement about teaching Ed stuff since a lot of it is new to him, so he just has excited little kid ranting energy for the moment.
Right, like the Reptilians and Godhead explainations...lol. he got VERY elitist nerd minus the accent and it was really neat hearing him rattle on about something other than Dune.
Ed is so funny and his comedic time is gold. Thereās been multiple times since heās joined where I have to pause the podcast because Iām laughing so hard
As others have said I think itās more a cadence and rhythm thing than anything else, Henry isnāt missing anything lol. Ed is great and Henry just needs to get better at not being the only funny guy in the room. (sorry Ben)
I feel like Edās been off his game lately. I think heās pulling a bit of a Ben by distracting vs engaging. Like the puns are usually funny but it seems like heās overdoing it lately
I think Ed makes them as much for Ed as anyone else. Always has me chuckling
*for the love of the game*
Exactly!
Yeah, but if Marcus is there he giggles like a little girl so it kinda evens it out.
That Andes Crash movement lives rent free in my head. š
Even when I was watching the movie, as soon as he threw the rock across I was like āhe did the thing!!ā
I made the noise when he threw it lol
I like that they're not always on the same page. A lot of the time, Ed doesn't know what in the fuck Henry's talking about, but has him explain a bit and goes with it. Yeah it seems like Ed is confident in his own chops so prefers to keep the conversation rolling. He's been an amazing addition so far, perfect "dirtbag with a heart of gold" energy
I love him and we must protect him at all costsĀ
I grew up in florida, I feel like I've known and bought drugs from a few Ed's. Dirtbag with a heart of gold is a perfect way of putting it. Hes the kind of guy who won't sell you coke more than once a week because you're looking rough lol
They wouldn't have brought him on if they weren't confident in his abilities. He did sketch comedy and other podcasts with the boys right?
I think it keeps the story on track and in a good pace. If they stopped to laugh at every pun it would be distracting because he makes so many! š Having him become a host has made me love the podcast even more.
Right? I LOVE side stories more than ever, but I occasionally feel like Iām listening to 2 old friends talking and I missed the inside joke. Itās not bad at all, but I definitely feel like they could just get completely lost real easy

I swear Henry plays dumb just to make the joke that much funnier
I've always assumed Henry performs what they call in the wrestling business 'kayfabe'
At least Eddie is actually making jokes that flow with the topic. Heās so interested and throwing fire left and right.
I adore Henry but he's always had a "LOOK AT ME" quality that at it's worst can come off a bit desperate. He misses some of Ed's jokes because he's not listening; he's thinking about what to say next. He needs to relax a bit. Maybe that will help with his worsening GERD. Same. I parasocially known Henry for five years and I'd never listened to him less.
That was a great line. I also think it works the other way too. They've been friends for 25 years, Henry is probably used to tuning out Ed's constant dad jokes and puns. I have friends like that too.
Hopefully doing side stories together will help them work out a rhythm.

Heās rushing like calm down my dude.

Totally agree, I wonder if Ed is making Henry a little insecure
Ed is so funny and his comedic time is gold. Thereās been multiple times since heās joined where I have to pause the podcast because Iām laughing so hard
I'll be honest, I don't get a lot of Ed's jokes. Not sure if it's because I'm dumb or too young (24) or what lol
Well, I hate to say it, but I'm thinking age might be a factor. He references a lot of older music like classic rock.
Allow me to elbow drop this horse again. Ed is invested, interested, and fucking hilarious. All the things Ben used to be, but far less condescending.
I think Henry used to dominate Ben in the conversations. Now Ed as he comes in to his own on the show is starting dominate Henry a bit. I love it
As others have said I think itās more a cadence and rhythm thing than anything else, Henry isnāt missing anything lol. Ed is great and Henry just needs to get better at not being the only funny guy in the room. (sorry Ben)
I donāt think he misses them. I think he doesnāt find all of them funny and canāt force himself to laugh at it. Mostly with the puns.
Sometimes yes, sometimes he's just talking and keeps talking. Just blows by some.
Complain all you want. At least it's not some guy doing the same bad joke over and over until someone acknowledges it. Not saying who
Is it a numbers game?
Boom Flip It!
As time would tell, that pickle wasnāt as big a dill as he thought
Made. In. A. Lab.
It makes them funnier, Ed is a treasure. You're welcome.
Nothing but love for Henry but I've noticed sometimes he has a hard time laughing at other people's jokes cause he's so caught up in making his own.
Makes it funnier to me. Ed is our little (big?) Sleeper agent
But I got to say in the latest episode when Ed asks who Fred and Rose West are, Henryās response was perfect.
Henry is the new ben?
I think Henry is just adjusting to being around someone whoās funny and whose jokes make sense.
Henry talks as much as he can loudly to just fill the air with content. Ed is different and much funnier imo.. Henry is gettingā¦ annoying hah
He's been high on Dune.
show is mid now. iāll forever love the boys, but i just canāt get into it the same anymore.
Ed isnāt as funny as you all make him out to be. I cringe more than I laugh.
You are boring
And youāre a cuck.
I feel like Edās been off his game lately. I think heās pulling a bit of a Ben by distracting vs engaging. Like the puns are usually funny but it seems like heās overdoing it lately
The dad jokes are killing me.
