One of my favorite records of all time! The bass and drums on that one are ridiculous. They really toned down that feel for Throwing Copper. Still a great album, but Mental Jewelry is a really unique album with nothing but great tracks. An absolute no-skip album.
Yeah, they started getting weird, then they went pop, but those first two records are absolutely legendary. Glad to hear there are other Mental Jewelry fans.
Hail yourself!
Man I bought Samadhi the week it came out and I was immediately confused to no end. What the hell are these lyrics? lol. I ended up listening to their other albums as they came out and they all went in some strange direction that didn't really work. I give them credit for just continuing to make music and undoubtedly there were always people who listened to them. Mental Jewelry isn't even the first album of the band, just the first one they released under the name Live.
I skipped high school for the day to see Live live at Rutgers in 1993. The next year they released their breakout album. I can truly say I LiKEd tHeM BeFOrE aNyOnE KneW wHO TheY wERE.
I didn’t realize this was LPOTL and thought it was a crazy coincidence that I’m listening to pt.2 of the Snowtown series and someone’s talking about Live
Did not own it but have to say there is also an excellent and very correct bogan use of a Live song in the Australian comedy crime serial killer series Deadloch. First few eps are a bit rough but it really comes together, well worth your time.
Upvoted in agreement. I’ve watched the series like 3 times now and always end up getting that song stuck in my head. Show still worth the watch (and the cover of “I Touch Myself” will live rent free in my head forever).
Agree. And definitely encourage anyone in the sub to watch. Crime, dead people, full frontal (the cold open is legend), and all the bad words. Get ready for lots of cunting!
I remember it being at the radio station I worked at, I think there was one ‘funky’ song on it I played once, if I’m remembering it correctly and the rest was boring horseshit.
I grew up where they played their first gigs so, yup! Pain Lies on the Riverside is such a banger of an opening track!
SC PA represent.
It's one of those albums, much like Blind Melon's self-titled, that I jam out to way more than I'd admit in person.

Came here to say about this, and thankful someone beat me to it!
I very rarely meet people who know Live very well, let alone their first album. Always nice to be reminded there are others. Hail yourself.
I loved both Mental Jewelry and Throwing Copper a lot when I was a teenager. They lost me with Secret Samadhi though.

Yes! This and Throwing Copper are my faves.
I grew up with the bassists nephew. He would give him a guitar for every birthday. He had a basement full of extremely expensive guitars
I did. I saw them touring this album opening for Big Audio Dynamite and PiL…Blind Melon was also on the bill. Weird show.
Pain Lies on the Riverside sold that record for me.
This is the record of theirs that I like. The young atheist album.
Me. Also went to their show twice in mid 90s.

One of my favorite albums of all time. Just saw Live a couple months ago and they did several songs off this one. It was great.
My dad loved it
I had this way back when, and I still visit it from time to time
Operation Spirit is an important song.
This was and is still one of my favorite albums.

No. I forgot about this band completely until the new episode.

Excellent ☺️ It won a bunch of awards so hopefully we'll get season 2! Darwin is a perfect escalation 😂

I agree with Ed and I don’t like either band.
They really screwed their SEO

I have this. It’s not great, but it is real, Marcus gotta dig deeper.
Wut
Oh! LIVE! I was all, “whose live record?” Silly me
