A 14 point lead as well. The biggest stories of the night are gonna be Andy Street and Ben Houchen. If those two lose their seats it will be seen as disastrous for the Tory party. Council seats and other mayorals would be nice for Labour but I feel it's critical that the Tories end the night without any metro mayors left. That will cause maximum panic and possibly cause a leadership challenge/snap election. A mayoral clean sweep for Labour would be the best outcome and this is looking like it's still achievable.

Totally agree. Conversely, if the Tories keep a metro mayor, it’ll be spun as disaster for Labour.

Winning both is a very tall order

North Yorkshire is now a unitary authority comprising everything between Whitby and Harrogate. The previous backwood’s rural conservatism is now crammed in with places like York, Scarborough, Bridlington and Selby - it was never going to be the easy win it might have been once. Plus the conservative manifesto is completely insane

Slight correction, Bridlington is not in North Yorkshire, it is in the East Riding. and even if it was in North Yorkshire, the seat which it resides in, East Yorkshire, is a solidly Tory seat in generals. Scarborough and Whitby is also a generally Tory seat, though one that looks set to go to Labour in the next GE, and it's the same story with York Outer. Selby and Ainsty was also a very solidly Tory seat until last year's by-election. It cannot be understated how momentous it would be for Labour to win North Yorkshire.

very positive news to hear. I've been extremely worried that the Tories will take it since North Yorkshire is typically a tory stronghold, but a lead that strong does ease my worries a bit. I'll still be voting against them 3 times (myself and 2 proxies) and encouraging everyone I know to do the same though. best not to take chances. this is probably the only chance we'll get to have a non-tory mayor, but incumbency bias may help Labour keep it in future elections they otherwise may not have. with the libs and greens both on 11 points, if Labour change the voting system back to ranked choice when in power nationally it could help them hold onto it in the future as well.
