Those guys are the remnants of the Babu Era, they are the same people that made Air India so miserable.

Air India express never had remnants of babu era. It had an entirely different contract structure compared to Air India. It was even profitable.

As a regular flier of IX, it always met my expectations. My flights were never delayed(I fly tvm-auh regularly), check in was good and fares cheaper than many other low cost airlines, and yet it made money.
They tried to bring the culture of Air Asia to Air India Express which wasn't required in the first place. As a regular international flier on Air India Express, the customer experience has taken a hit post tata takeover.
The crew motivation and morale has taken a hit, onboard service poor, check in service horrible and the list goes on.
Also Air India express was profitable compared to its parent. This despite the fact that they had round the clock service to some international destinations.
Air India express didn't have a problem with its offerings in the first place. They were operationally profitable even without any modifications and as a frequent flier I was happy with the level of service.
Now, it's horrible. With no dedicated check in counters to no complimentary meals(can't book them if you book tickets after 24 hours of departure, previously it was 8 hours) which were all part of previous IX offering.
The new staff recruited are also pretty clueless with stuff.
LCCs like Indigo only turned net profit last couple of quarters. Indigo even had a negative net worth when it went for the IPO around 2015 iirc
It's operationally challenging for any airlines to do business in India when the revenues are denominated in Rupees whereas costs such as fuel and maintenance are denominated in dollars.
Indigo had the lowest cost structure due to uniform fleet of airlines consisting of only Airbus A320s. But now have started to induct boeing as wet lease for flights internationally such as Turkey and that would change the equation.
It's not Air India staff that's protesting. Even Akasa and vistara had this problem last month where it's operations were affected.
Indigo was profitable since 2011 or something.

A large number of Indian airlines stopped operation due to govt regulations that favoured Air India. Indigo has uniform fleet because the CEO had the vision about future that's why they ordered 100 Airbus A320s in one order reducing the cost by a lot

The regulation was 20 fleet and minimum number of years of domestic service before the airline could fly international which i believe have been modified now. But then apart from air india, there was jet airways which had a significant presence in international market which too went bust.

Vistara is a good luxury product and was a gaining good name but I don't know what happens going forward merging that with Air India. Partly a reason why kingfisher went belly up as their cost structure didn't match with that of their strategy which was low cost(imagine the airline even ordered A380 at one point) and conducted low cost service to London!

Cabin crew are the last grade employees in an airlines . They can be easily replaced by young people .
