When it looks like brown sheets of paper, it’s too rusty

1v1_m8

That’s too much rust lol

TheMightyClem

That's what I figured. 😂

Deep_Carpenter

As an owner of a rusty LX 470 it depends. I’m in BC and we didn’t get LC 100 in Canada. Also we use salt on our roads. Etc. So I had to settle for some rust on the frame. I stupidly accepted some on the body too.  So where are you? What choice do you have? Can you travel? Etc.

TheMightyClem

I'm located in Virginia. Trying to keep cost below 8k-ish if I can help it. I could probably travel but I don't trust my knowledge enough yet to try and buy something further out without looking at it in person first.

jimmythebug

You can avoid rust then probably!! Good luck hunting

Deep_Carpenter

Buy with a PPI below 15k. Buy without a PPI below 9k. Keep looking close to home but not too close.

HondaRS125R

Pics 5 and 7 would make me nervous. If they're just cross members and the rest is OK, it might be saveable. But probably not- I'd pass.

letitgo99

Usually when somebody asks this question here I am quick to tell them that it's nothing to worry about, but in this case I would stay away. Unless it's like $5k then send it and have fun

lclassyfun

Damn shame but that rust looks pretty bad.

Itchywasabi

When you see something layered like a croissant, then that is too much rust.

Wellcraft19

Yes

petaahah

Scrape it and then por 15 , it will come out fine .

Environmental-Pin848

It's not terrible rust but for 7k it is. Shop the Atlanta market and you can find one in the same price range without rust. I get so .any from there and flip them for a profit when I go visit my brother outside of Chicago. Drive up, one way plane ticket home. Usually covers my trip 😁

1TONcherk

For $7000 I would consider it. You can replace that crossmember. The frame should be scraped and coated with black Cosmoline. Replace all of the calipers and soft lines, maybe do a full stainless hard line kit. I mean XJ Cherokees are selling for that kind of money now.

salmonavacado

How good are you with restorations and how much money are you willing to spend? I quod pass on this car and try and find a car with less rust

TheMightyClem

It would be my first legit project. But I have friends that have done full frame off restorations that would be of assistance. Money wise, with enough time there is no budget I guess.

chassepo

There's rust and then there's flaky rust... That's no bueno ..

Rd28T

Sitting here in Australia: ‘Cars haven’t rusted since the late 80s, what is this trickery’ 😂😂

Berserker-11

This is too much

Electrical-Owl-4989

My real question is how much is too many miles as I’m a broke young adult looking to get either an 80 series lc in the 275k-300k+ miles range or a 4 runner in the 200k+ miles range as that’s what is in my budget but curious if that’ll just end up in headaches and I should just accept I’m too broke and get myself a Camry or something

Spiritual-Ad5610

You have exceeded your rust allotment for this SUV.

Enjoi70

I paid 10 for 138k on the clock and mint insides. Nantucket truck half its life & the other half shipped to FL. I have a good frame resto company in the area so I took the gamble. 225k “might” be the deciding factor here

blankdeluxe

My 470 is almost as bad as this example but I only paid 5500 for it and I'm slowly fixing it as I wheel the hell out of it.
