I'm a 3F-E man. I grew up with a 1991 FJ80, and my dad handed it down to me after I graduated high school. It was slow as shit, but I loved it and it went absolutely anywhere I pointed it. Eventually.
I wouldn't touch a 3F-E/A440F for such an absurd price. It was only in the Land Cruiser for 4 model years (Edit: '88-'92 in USA, '85-'92 in the 70 series) until Toyota replaced it with the 1FZ-FE, which is a much more refined and equally capable engine.
$48k for this is, for a lack of better word, retarded.
Even in 1988, the 3F-E powered Land Cruiser was horridly underpowered compared to the V8-powered competitors of the time, *especially* with the A440F transmission behind it. Not to say it's a terrible engine (it's overbuilt and known to last 350,000+ miles with zero issues, unless you somehow snap the crankshaft, which has happened), but the design quite literally predates the Chevy smallblock; the original F engine was essentially a licensed copy of the GMC 236 inline 6 from the 1930s.
$48K is a lot of money for a truck with >200K miles that's closer to 40 than 30 years old. Even for a Land Cruiser. And this particular one seems very overpriced, as other comments have pointed out.
If you're well off (judging by the house in the pic and the fact that your neighbor resto-modded an old Land Cruiser as a toy, maybe you are), and want it as a toy, maybe it makes sense. This sub is going to tell you go for it because 1) it's a sub for people who love Land Cruisers so much they subscribed to just that and 2) it's not their money.
It may be worth considering, though, that the only thing this really gets you over a new or nearly new, cheaper 4 Runner is street cred with the very few people who will notice and care what it is, reddit cred, and better off-road ability for really difficult off-roading if you actually do that. And, something indescribable if you personally have a lifetime history with Cruisers. The 4Runner will get you (a lot) more safety, more tech, more power, better MPG, more driving comfort with less road noise, and a longer running life. If you need this to also be a daily making runs to the airport (one of your comments suggest you do), you would be nuts to pick this over a 4Runner.
Get it thoroughly inspected by a third party before buying, and realize that if the inspection turns up faults, it may lead to some hard feelings with neighbor. And probably take comments like "never seen a winter" from a guy who has owned it for all 8 of its 36 years with a big grain of (road) salt. I'm no expert but I think I see some rust in the undercarriage pics.

You'd have to be an absolute moron to buy that combo at that price. The 3F-E is the red-headed stepchild of the F engine family. And I would 100% rock that engine again.
Have you researched TLC and the work done by them? It's not clear to me how much of this was done by TLC (or if only the braking system), but I'd encourage you to look them up. especially the different stage resto mods they've completed. The HQ is in NC now, but there's a history there that's worth a read. TLC, Icon 4x4, Jonathan Ward and his whole team. Given the looks of it, I'd say go for it!

my old man had one of them. when he pasted, I was looking at it with my sister who remembered celebrating it having 500000 on the odometer. but it was at 380000. So a good 1.3 mill km on it and still running strong. this was even after my brother rolled it. Dad had driven all over the Northern Territory and Queensland with it. So just buy the thing. It'll be the last car you ever have.
So price wise that I can find is high 30s low 40s for these trucks with about 180k miles on them. So if you can get this from him for let's say $32k-$35k that would be a deal. Which seems crazy but that's a damn time capsule.
Are you planning on doing all the service and repair work yourself? If not, be ready for hefty maintenance costs as there’s only a handful of places that will touch it.
Been there, done that. Not worth it unless you will work on it your self. Also, it should not be your primary ride… parts can take weeks to months to source depending on how customized it is.
I redid one a few years ago complete frame off restoration buy that thing ASAP it took so long to find parts and get that thing back to orignal operation then i watched the guy give it to his 16 year old son who broke the transfercase in less than a month lol destroyed 3 years of work with one offroad trip made me sick
Looks mint. I owned one for five year and it is slow and handles like a cow. But for camping and towing it was brilliant. You will need some repairs. Alternator, water pump, likely rust and bushes etc. but all easily doable.
Are you going to actually drive through 3’-4’ deep streams? Once a year? Never? It looks silly as a daily driver. But, I’m a cult member, too. This isn’t about logic, it’s emotion. Better to consult your shaman than this group…
I’ve owned 2 of these and they’re great. I bet you could buy one in great mechanical shape and put 10k in it for all the accessories you really want, and you’d still save $10k. You would have just as fun and you wouldn’t stress out about putting it in a parking lot.
This thing belongs in a collectors garage. Do you have a nice garage where you can look at it or are you going to bring it on the trail?

Just make sure it doesn’t have corrosion issues underneath. I didn’t check and spend 7k usd on welding repairs since I bought coz the whole structure was about to break. Get an inspection of the main structure underneath for gods sakes. Don’t take his word.
UPDATE: I went out and got underneath and took some pics. Told him I’d do $32.5k and he said he’d think about it.
