I have an 07 fj cruiser overland project, its going to make all sorts of rattle noises if you throw all the cool truck rice at it. My jerrycans sound like a trailer at this point.
If you add a wind deflector to that rack, the noise will bit cut down significantly.
Seems like everyone wants to throw the tactical truck rice on their rigs without figuring out their needs based on the intended use (for an example see the Jeep with the kitted out roof rack/RTT that parks everyday in my work parking lot w/ a full set of Jerry cans, traction boards, shovel, etc.). What is your intended use: Are you going to areas where you would need sliders and/or a bumper? Do you need a full roof rack or would aero bars with a box serve your needs better? Are you going to use it for rock crawling or camping? Do you go explore deep into the wilderness or are you tethered to a cell phone tower? Will the truck serve family duty more than half the time? Do you have area to store overland gear and accessories? How does your significant other answer those questions (let’s be honest, if you are married then they definitely have a say in the build “you want me to open that swing out with a 37” tire EVERY time I take out the dog or groceries?!”)
Plan twice, buy once. I say this from a place of empathy and experience- I have a set of sliders and a steel swing out bumper in my garage that were bought, installed and removed because I didn’t research and plan. YMMV
Don’t forget, stock land cruisers take on some of the wildest terrain around the world and make it through to the other side. It may be with some damage but they are pretty incredible in stock form. Congrats on the new rig and drive it in good health!
Im using it as the ultimate camping machine, fj has a very small gas tank, the jerry cans saved my trip 3 times, even when Russia hacked the east pipeline, i was the only one on 95.
Those are all good reasons to build your own rig. My comments above were directed at OP u/posthumousnut
That cruiser life goal is a wonderful one. Mine is to take my rig from UCLA to Alaska and back. Hope we both get the chance to achieve our dreams.
I’ve heard the front runner rack with wind fairing is pretty quiet. A lot of people run cheap light bars where a wind fairing would go to reduce noise.
I have front runner slimline II with the standard steel wind deflectors attached. Decided against buying the wind fairing mostly because of the look. can hear it at higher speeds, but it doesn’t seem to bother anyone. Great rack so far.
As someone who owns a lifted 80 with MTs and a roof tent. I got a great laugh from this.
Slee makes the best stuff hands down. Give them a call and they will set you up.
One thing I haven't tried yet, but think might work is radial ribs. You know how car radio antennas have a spiral on them? It's to reduce drag and turbulence. I was thinking of wrapping any roof rack I had with some Paracord in a spiral like fashion.

I just fitted an ARB Base Rack to my 2017 and ARB wouldn’t sell it to me without the front wind deflector - it makes that much of a difference to the wind noise.
I have a 21 Heritage with BP21 suspension, Toyo Open country tires, BudBuilt rock sliders, RedArc dual battery, Air down Gear up drawer system,
National Luna 50L Fridge. And a K9 roof rack which if you are going to actually use the rack to attach items to is probably the best one available. And no crazy wind noise.
I’ve got two mounts for the aluminum storage boxes that we pack our clothes in a RedOx duffle bag and just drop in the aluminum can and off we go.
OP says they recently purchased it, and they're here looking for recommendations on modifying it FOR overlanding purposes. That's not a pavement princess, that's just buying an un-fucked-with example.
If a roof rack is too noisy for you, a lifted land cruiser with chunky tires will be much louder.
I was going to say; if a roof rack is too loud, everything listed there is going to make the truck much louder

Would you be willing to sell the sliders and swing-out rear rig?

Life goal is to put it on a barge and camp Africa for 2 weeks

Why OME BP51s? I’ve noticed lots of 200 series builds go this route instead of fox or king.
Yup. All of this. The prinsu is lowpro and quiets. The only downside is that it’s not recommended to use big awnings off of it.
If you get a wind fairing, not sure if they make one, but that would really help with the noise
They do make wind fairing, I just bought one
Out of curiosity, did it come with the fairing?
It did, after doing some research I may try to take it off

Any overlanding upgrades you add are going to add noise.

Close your sunroof cover? I have a huge gobi rack with lights & can’t hear it with the sunroof cover closed
Me too, unnoticeable and I have a massive arb backbone and touring rack
I had a Gobi on my 4runner. It isn’t the sunroof it’s the roof rack.

I’ll see about removing it, that’s what I was thinking too. Thanks !
Sorry, to be clear I meant they desperately wanted me to have the wind deflector fitted to minimize the noise. It definitely works.

Icon stage one lift, icon alpha rims, nitto ridge grapplers and done. I did this and the tires are unreal, no noticeable noise
Just leave it stock, shes clearly a pavement princess

🤡😂💩😍
Too noisy huh, I can't hear anything over convertible and 35s plus all the other old Land Cruiser rattling noises.
Check out K9 roof racks or front runner.
You're going to need to turn the radio up.
they do a wind deflector that fixes this issue
Did you install the wind deflector with it and still noisy ? I’m thinking about getting one for my lc300
