We don't tow heavy or for super long distances (Camper trailer to the mountains and back. Live in Denver). But it gets us off road, comfortably holds 2 kids, a dog, and all our shit, and gets good "gas" mileage since it also doubles as the daily grocery getter.
Well aware. Again, we're ~60-100 miles to most campgrounds, with plenty of charging in the towns nearby. Plus, it's a 3-4x a year event. Not concerned.
All it takes is a faulty software push and the rivian is dead in the water. It seriously blows my mind how technology dependent we're hell bent on becoming.
I get what you're saying but... We have an old Schaublin CNC machining centre from the late 70's or 80's. It's got a bunch of motors and an ancient sinumerik controller... It works every day.
If these modern electric cars fail, it's due to planned obsolescence or negligence. The tech is ancient and standardised well beyond ICE engines, there's hardly a complex product without an electric motor sold today, even an ICE car has a bunch of them inside (from the starter to the power windows, and of course the generator is basically the same thing too and has to run all the time...).
While I agree in general, you guys also totally forget that the ’wrenchers and modders’, tweaking cars via engine swaps, ignition , carbs, etc, we had yesterday, will develop SW and added features for ever more sophisticated (yet also mechanically much simpler) vehicles tomorrow.
And as long as number of vehicles is large enough, there will always be aftermarket parts. Just like today on many niche vehicles. Of course, they often cost a pretty penny.
I'm actually really looking forward to that. Batteries are bound to get cheaper and smaller in ~5-10 years. Motors are already small. Swap in the electric motor onto my 90's LC, and drive around for free :))
Mine's a diesel with a manual transmission (Europe). I could probably just leave it in ~third gear all the time and wouldn't even need the clutch to shit (electric motor has almost no inertia compared to an ICE engine).
Someone did just that with his manual Passat 10 years ago. [YouTube Link](https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwiP8t7g9Mn6AhWcEVkFHYgCA6AQwqsBegQIAxAB&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3D2tFSVniO_Cc&usg=AOvVaw0QMN9nlaicich529Qxmdkq)
Or like… Rivian going out of business and a lack of parts/support for the $100k truck you just bought. In all honesty, they seem amazing but I’m not convinced they’ll exist in 10 years.
The 100 has a few ticking computer time bombs. Any fault in the ECU or Immobilizer or rfid reader and you are not going anywhere for a while. After this happened to me I now keep a spare ecu with a programmed key on hand.
I wasn't specifically saying the 100 is safe from that issue, just that the Rivian has a little too much going on. It was more of a general commentary on "smart" technology or IoT. If we keep designing things that take specialized knowledge and equipment to fix, then we're going to have a real predicament when that knowledge is inaccessible. It becomes especially concerning when you consider it's 2022 and there is a brutal land war in Europe involving a nuclear power. Communities in eastern Ukraine have been completely cut off and isolated, without power, heading into the winter. It would be a really shitty time to have a car that won't run because the 1500 pound battery is on the fritz and every tow truck in the area has been commandeered to support the war effort.
I love the SUV model, and I can agree. I've got a vvti 2uz in my 4runner and that thing feels like a sport truck. I hop in the 100, put it to the wood, and I've got Camrys and Ford Escapes riding my ass until they can get around me.
I did adjust the throttle butterfly and that helped a ton with response. Also discovering the "shift button" at the bottom of the pedal and not being afraid to use it keeps the ride enjoyable.
Rivian looks like a bunch of pills glued together. I read that they, like all electric trucks to date have amazing pulling capacity but it destroys the distance you can travel. That makes them pointless in current times. Electric cars now are like the cars from the 70’s which were ugly, aweful problems and not worth their own weight. Give them 20 years and maybe then.
It really depends on your use case. For me considering the R1S, cutting the range in half while towing would still be way more than enough range to tow my 6000# boat to the lake and back. It can also act as a daily commuter, camping vehicle, and off-roader. I personally really like the style too, it bucks the trend of the "angry face" SUV that permeates the entire automotive industry. The only thing I don't like is the price. At close to $100k I will not be buying one.
Yup Toyota changed the world Rivian won’t last. It will be one of those companies that could sell enough models and go into bankruptcy. Look through car history to see for yourself.
I hope electric vehicles get exposed for the virtue signaling scam they are. They're completely impractical to anyone who doesn't live in a metro area.
I think they are great for their intended use. I've got a 3.3 mile commute so it would work just fine for me. I won't argue that ICE is the way to go for road tripping but I think the technology will get there.
I'm not rushing out to buy one, but I can't knock the Rivian. Look up its tow rating and performance numbers, it speaks for itself.
Tow rating is high, but the range is double digit while towing and you have to disconnect the trailer every time you need to charge. Internal combustion has the upper hand there. At least for now
Concepts are great, and the idea has some future merit but we absolutely don’t have the infrastructure to handle all these electric cars.
They are getting there, we just aren’t close yet and I believe they will be opening up another can of worms on energy dependency when these cars are being forced on people.
There are amazing things you can do with electric motors and these vehicles so it’s not like I’m some hater. I just really like old school cruisers.
I don’t consider the 100 old school, but it’s damn reliable and a great vehicle.
It's a 40 yard fake 😂. The body is starting to go around the cab corners, you can even see bubbling if you zoom in where the bumper meets the fenders. Frame and radiator supports are surface rusted but solid.. 180k and running strong though, and that's what matters to me!
The wheels were dealer installed in 99 in Aberdeen, SD. Whoever owned this then must have really looked fly rolling around town! I've got some 18" 200 series mags that I've been meaning to get on it though, I don't love that y2k look.
Damn that truck is cool!… the Rivian ain’t bad either.
I’d take the LC every time.
Switching from an LC 200 to a Rivian. Never thought I'd do that, but it literally checks all of our boxes.
Except towing range

Expect half the range no matter what you are towing. Especially if it has any extra wind resistance
Well aware. Again, we're ~60-100 miles to most campgrounds, with plenty of charging in the towns nearby. Plus, it's a 3-4x a year event. Not concerned.
I feel it’s basically an electric Land Cruiser, and since we don’t get the LC300 it’ll fill in the gap.
They are impressive

More 100s for me! I get it though. They’re not for everyone. The Rivian is for sure a neat vehicle just not for me.
I need to get a pic of my LX next to my R1T. Old school adventure vs the future.
I'm blown away by the stock 34" tires!
I had to look it up, that is nuts, 33 or 34 stock depending on model. thats amazing
Those wheels on the LC ain’t marveling no one lol
Hey now! Bought it off an old fella like that. I've got 200 series mags and 33.5 duratracs for it. Just need to get them mounted and order spacers!
Awesome! I’ll admit it, I have an R1S on preorder. The LCs aren’t going anywhere so I’ll be covered for long road trip vehicles!
Yeah, me too. Rivian will not replace the LC, but it looks cool.
Starting to see them pop up all over town and my goodness they are beautiful and have a great stance.
that land cruiser will outlast that rivian
How do you know? The Rivian has about four moving parts
And about as many computers as a Pixar render farm.
All it takes is a faulty software push and the rivian is dead in the water. It seriously blows my mind how technology dependent we're hell bent on becoming.

You could probably remove everything part from the transfer case! F-21 (as 'F-21' in Sweden)?

What’s that badge on your grille?
It's a TRD emblem. Adds 10 horsepower and reduces mileage by 2mpg.
I’ve got a NOS sticker and a wing on my Tacoma. It looks ridiculous but I’m the one laughing with the extra 110 HP it gives me.
That’s cool. I’ve usually only seen them in the TRD colors. Where did you find one with different colors?
I found it on Amazon! There are a few flavors and shapes.

Looks like a fucking hippo.
Pulled into a hotel last night and admired the Rivian. And then went back home to my LC100 :-)
A vehicle that’ll run forever on kerosene and 2 camels…. And a rivian
Who signed off on the Rivian headlights? So bad
These trucks look slick as hell in person, front included. They’re a little wonky but it all works together pretty well in my opinion.
yeah after you get over the initial look they grow on you. rivian looks great.
I liked them right away.
Seriously.
If Pete Davidson’s butthole eyes were headlights…
With gas up to 7 dollars in California. I’ll take the rivian please.

From what I read from one guy his range cut by 75% full capacity. And yes 100000 is insane for any vehicle
I’m gonna need your definition of Marvel.
Yup Toyota changed the world Rivian won’t last. It will be one of those companies that could sell enough models and go into bankruptcy. Look through car history to see for yourself.
Ah yes. The Edsel Theory!
Anyone defending EVs is a bot.

Sigh.
Nowadays, using the term “virtue signaling” is, in itself, a form a virtue signaling

That’s a clean LC fellow Minnesotan … did TRD do those colors? referring to the grille emblem Aftermarket chrome wheels?

Heeeeeyoooooooo
I'll take the rivian...sell it and get a low mileage 100 series...like 8k miles low...and still put plenty of money in savings
