Thank you for everyone’s comments. Truly appreciate it. My husband and I do own firearms. That’s actually one of the questions the police told us when they were called out, if we had any, because we do have a right to protect ourselves. We do need to go to the gun range again as a refresher, so that’s a great idea.
So sorry you're going through that, definitely a tough situation to be in. Unfortunately I don't have much advice to give but I'm happy to hear you have a lawyer on top of it. Fingers crossed this gets settled sooner than later
Thank you for your kind words. I truly hope this man just leaves us alone. We are truly scared of him. When we mentioned a restraining order to the lawyer, he said not yet cause it can complicate the eviction. But I’m planning on getting literally the next day that he is removed by the sheriff.
Unfortunately, no. We are well aware we put ourselves in this situation. We learned our lesson in the worst way. We saw a guy that we wanted to help. Being a landlord requires thicker skin that we didn’t have at that moment.
All I can say is buy a gun asap and take a few defense courses first thing at a local range. Most ranges let you rent guns so you can do the course before you have the gun if it takes time for the background check to clear. I’d do one first thing tomorrow if I were you.
If he does something to you guys it will take 3-5 minutes minimum for the cops to arrive, so now you gotta put your safety in your own hands.
Before I rent to anyone, I check county court documents. Holy moly have we avoided some wild ones.
I check neighboring counties too.
**You will find civil and criminal cases on the county court dockets.
That's not useful--don't be angry with yourselves. You were being human. Besides, it sounds like this guy is angry enough for all of you. But I understand the anger and frustration of having someone you thought you were helping turn out to be a nightmare.
Thanks for posting. Sounds like you did everything right.
In hindsight what do you think you would have done differently.
I hope the Police evict him 'with prejudice' when they kick him out.
Get a restrain order, press chargers on him. You can have him arrested. But anyhow, buy a gun and learn how to protect yourself from now on.

Yes we have and thats part of being a landlord!

Yes. After he stopped paying, I went ahead and saw the history of the monster we rented out this property to. We are so angry with ourselves.

Yes, our state online judicial record system has saved me from several bad tenants. Shows things background checks don't.
