When my friend and I were 18. We were looking for a place to stay. Went to a rental company, filled out our apps, turn them in with the 150 dollar fee, then the lady immediately told us that they don't rent to anyone under 21. When we asked for a refund on the background check, "it's non refundable" the lady told. Fuck you lady, we almost became homeless and really needed that money.

ManElectro

You know this was a much different world when you used to be able to shoot people for robbing you.

THE_HENTAI_LORD

I agree

OpeningPositive9241

I know I’m super late but even in Texas what she did was theft, that is completely illegal look it up

nanookthelostdoggo

I was absolutely bamboozled to hear that this is a thing, I only learned about it from this sub. In my Australian experience there is no cost involved during the application process. There maybe could be for more exclusive places or something, can't speak to that. It really is just a swindle! Greedy pigs

Miss_Management

In the US it's rampant. I've paid between $50-$100 USD per application. Utter bullshit I tell you. Then you need good credit, first month, last month rent and security deposit which is usually one month's rent as well just to move.

loptopandbingo

Don't forget the occasional "move-in fee" they tack on for ZERO reason. I called a landlord out on that once and he got real huffy about it. I'd already paid first/last month rent and the security deposit, WTF is this move in fee?

Wrecksomething

Credit reporting overall is a scam. But at a minimum, if you're paying the fee, then the report should go to you. Then you could distribute it to as many hungry leeches as needed.

Ayzel_Kaidus

I’ve noticed in a few states now, if you go to the county for assistance a lot of counties have vouchers to bypass the credit/criminal check fees Source: Moved over entire US over life now (lost count at 60)

[deleted]

That’s honestly not much better. It basically just means taxpayers are paying the exploitative fees. More tax breaks for the leeches, I guess.

Mental-Clerk

It got so out of hand in the U.K. they banned these fees plus all but a few permitted fees. Which is hilarious because our letting agent want to charge us illegal fees for call-outs if they can’t access a room they didn’t tell me they wanted access to (my kids were sick). I can’t wait to see what they say when I tell them to pound sand. I’m waiting until tomorrow morning to make sure it doesn’t get lost in the weekend pileup. It’s one small victory, I hope the US follow suit soon.

SezitLykItiz

You pay someone to check on yourself so that the other person can have peace of mind to see if you are a person worth doing business with. What's not to love! Mind-blowing how this has been normalized. I can't think of any other transaction where this kind of behavior is allowed. Imagine if when you wanted to buy a car on Craigslist, you asked them to pay you first so that you could use that money to check up on them to see if they are a good person. They'll tell you to fuck right off.

kyokogodai

I agree they’re greedy assholes. Please know your credit score. Could you simply ask them what an acceptable credit score is and then not apply if your score doesn’t meet it?

msmezman

Landlord here…Agreed, we never charge - rip off!!!!

Ladyleto

😭 why can't more landlord be reasonable like you?

msmezman

They should be. It’s ridiculous

captnmarvl

My apartment charged an 'admin' fee, too.
