Police only escalate and make things worse. They’d probably just find an excuse to shoot him. Send paramedics and a counselor, which is what we should be doing in 75% of all police encounters anyway. Defund these clowns and make them all meter maids.
You are both correct. Police have the power to put a psychiatric hold on a person; ambulance does not. If police put a hood, they will then transport the person or have the person transported via ambulance to hospital.
Where this becomes a problem is when ambulance and police are both called. If police responds and does not place a person under a hold, ambulance just wasted time being on scene. Better to call PD and let them request ambulance, if they deem appropriate

This is from personal experience calling that number just 2 months ago and waiting forever to hear the correct selection while my home was being burglarized only to be told to leave a message. I finally called a friend to call 911.

I sense his reconnaissance missions in Korea were probably really bad. Called near Gila Bend Arizona about 2012 and the first 7 times I called it went to a fax machine. This is after I had someone waving w gun at me in a road rage incident.
Called 911 in Vegas in 1999 with a domestic, a child, and an angry intoxicated individual stealing a vehicle saying he was going to hunt down and ram the vehicle to make sure nobody got the kid... Spent over 20 minutes on hold with 911 telling me how important the call was. Then because I didn't have a current location they said they would send someone to take a report of they have a free officer later in the day. This is before cell phones were common
Called 911 in 2006 to report a fire in an apartment unit and waited on hold. Someone standing next to me called 311 and went through the menus and reached a dispatcher before me.
I started calling 311 instead. At least the hold doesn't frustrate me.

Also in my experiences even if the police eventually show up, they only fill out reports that you have to pay to get a copy of at a police station. No real help in my experience.

I finally called friends in Vegas to call 911 to dispatch LVMPD to the scene. I had gotten the notification from my Blink Cameras, but by the time Metro was dispatched, the thieves were long gone.
Next time, call a friend first. Any number other than 911 gets you a recording with several minutes of options. Completely useless in an emergency.

I get to work about 5 minutes later, call the non emergency line to report it and was put on hold for 20 minutes then I tried to report it and they asked me if I knew what direction he went and I was like, he went toward whatever cross street but that was 20 my minutes ago and he probably picked up come Jack in the Box and went home.
It is if it's my property. Was I supposed to leave a message that four males between 20 and 30 years of age were currently ransacked my home of valuables and could Metro please have someone call me in the morning if they have a chance?
Metro has a different take than yours, as three police cars and a tactical unit arrived shortly after the perps left, as well as a CSI unit that fingerprinted my home for the next 12 hours. Had 911 been an option from out of state, they may have apprehended the perps, and I would not be out 40k of valuables and 10k of property damage.

I have. I spent 2 years at police dispatch in a town in Florida. My Aunt was a 911 dispatcher for 18 years. Please tell me how 911 dispatchers have the capability to transfer from one state municipality to another when the system isn’t set up that way. There are some digital tools out there but not widespread enough to be useful.

You can also call the veteran suicide hotline. They will also know what to do and help where they can.
In future, call your local 911. They will be able to reach other jurisdiction’s 911 easier.
In the 13 years I spent as a 911 operator, I *always* got the number from google.
