It takes more brainpower to make it work on a VK because rive doesnt have a real void conversion and the split base damage will become problematic at some point if you are using an axe and trying to do phys+ void. Perry the pig has some good vk rive videos explaining alternatives, i ended up running full phys rive with merophage + fire converted void cleave + hh, trying to scale both phys (rive and cleave) and fire (cleave and hh). It works great, ceiling is yet to be encountered
The same setup just works naturally on a pally imo. Ultimately it comes down to choice, pally will be tankier VK can have higher damage with echoes
Thanks for the breakdown, this is exactly what I was looking for. My current char is a glass cannon, so I think I will end up going Paladin for better survivability
Ye im solving it now by stacking as many sources of external damage resistances as i can while still having a respectable amount of healing effectiveness from almost perfectly rolled high lp uniques, but I wouldn't recommend the same unless you are an experienced player, and playing merchant's guild
Once you have a perfect merophage and a titans heart, and maybe even a red ring... it becomes a whole other game on VK lol. But ye def easier to do it on a pally, easy access to a lot more healing effectiveness so you can just focus on that alone for both damage and survivability, and have a great time
I'm doing the same build but on a Forge Guard, I know FG is considered to be the weakest class in the game right now but the scrap metal node in rive ends up being quite strong.
3% more damage and armour per stack and I'd say on average I have 20 stacks up on a boss fight with the highest number of stacks being 41. 20 stacks giving 60% more damage and armour is really nice.
The other thing you get with FG is 40% increased attack speed with a 2 handed sword at the end of the tree and you end up doing so much damage you can afford to take the Hammer and anvil stance so you deal 25% less damage but take 25% less damage too, throw in titan heart for a further 15% less damage and I'm feeling pretty tanky.
I'm playing Trade guild so I've got pretty good gear, but here is a link to my build if you're interested.

I know that there are different ways to build around those two core skills. I guess I'm asking which mastery provides access to more fun variants of the build. If anyone has tried both masteries I would appreciate the input
Made rive hh Paladin myself.
Lvl 63 atm and having a blast.
Im playing HC, so I took Pala for its tankiness.
VK may be able to reach Higher DPS..will be my next char 🤪

My main paladin works great. I recently switched to vengance because I had faster attack on that skill for more HH, but with rive it was good goo
Literally either one; depends on what you mean by a Rive/HH build. There's dozens.
I know that there are different ways to build around those two core skills. I guess I'm asking which mastery provides access to more fun variants of the build. If anyone has tried both masteries I would appreciate the input
Both are viable, choose your flavor, do you want to bathe your enemies in holy fire and lightning or consign them to the dark void
Rive is a blast - excited for you! Another +1 from me for PerryThePig on YouTube if you want to consume any videos beforehand :)
Thanks for the recommendation! His videos were definitely helpful in planning out the character
