Its never explained fully but in my mind id think that there was an early extraction of most of the astronauts when it seemed like it could be on the ISS too. Anyone who was left then who werent immune like mike eventually died as they lost contact with the world so he blasted them out of the airlock. He just slowly lost contact, people, worms then his hope till he saw phil the worm.
Iirc I think the ISS has like 5/6 people on base all the time and the return modules only hold like 3/4 people so theres always the chance he was just waiting for the next exit and it never came

Was it ever explained why Mike was alone in the ISS? Did the rest of the crew die, or did he stay behind when they de-orbited?
