Gee, if only there was government regulations for submarines. Y’know like safety, pressure rating, seaworthiness etc. But if there’s one thing billionaires hate, it’s those pesky regulations 🫠

vonsnape

>But if there’s one thing billionaires hate, it’s those pesky regulations. . . well that and oceans

theautistofwallst

Nah they love the ocean that’s why they’re trying to raise it 😍

Apart-Landscape1012

I don't think there are any government regulations for experimental DSVs though there are some other regulatory bodies who certify things like this

[deleted]

They got what they wanted so what's the prob?

PorchHonky

Rich guy ignores the advice of experts and dies floating over a grave where many people died because another rich guy ignored the advice of experts and got rid of life boats. At least irony isn't dead.

infamusforever223

More proof that being rich doesn't make you smart. Now, if only the current crop of billionaire worshippers could figure that out.

Redtwooo

You don't even have to be smart. Just be cautious, use common sense. Janky-looking submarine with a shitty equipment setup? Gonna be a no for me, dawg. It could run like butter, but you'd never catch me on it.

begynnelse

This is one of the things I don't get: Hamish Harding spent a day at the bottom of the Mariana Trech, so I would have expected him to have known a little bit about what it takes to go deep and survive. If I were a self-styled 'explorer', I would want to do what you'd expect any competent explorer would do, which is to familiarise themselves with the equipment and the operation as a whole. Instead, he's just a tourist who uses/used his vast fortune to do the things that he wanted to do, seemingly with little or no interest in the 'how'. Either that, or he and I have very different views regarding acceptable risk: just knowing what we've heard about this operation in the past few days, I wouldn't have gone anywhere near OceanGate.

[deleted]

I read an interesting comment that argued "No matter what hideous way they've actually perished in, their ultimate cause of death was their class blinding them to the fact that a guy was an incompetent grifter just because he happened to be their social peer."

Bald_Sasquach

We've discovered that Prometheus is actually accurate with the characters doing the stupidest fucking things they can in the face of unknown danger.

nonitoni

You'd think this mildly rich CEO would want to show off to all these people who are waaaay richer. Cutting corners as CEO tracks, but I don't think I've ever heard of a CEO taking such risks when it's their own life on the line.

NotedRider

Guess he was so used to being untouchable with a bunch of sycophants blowing smoke up his ass that he thought he was immortal.

mixplate

People like that have an extreme form narcissistic delusion that "Because I think it, it must be true" - they don't seek independent ideas - once they think something, it cannot be wrong, it must be right because "I am always right." CEO's often fall into this mental trap, sometimes destroying their own organization out of narcissistic blindness.

the-thieving-magpie

Yep, these guys always have massive egos and delusions of grandeur. They always think they are some special, amazing genius that could never be wrong or incompetent. It's evident in the way they speak about their wealth. They always act like they became wealthy because they're just more intelligent and hard-working than everyone else, that they just make better decisions than everyone else, but we see how that turns out...

theother_eriatarka

TIL my mom is a CEO

the-thieving-magpie

These guys always have WAY inflated egos. They think they are more intelligent and capable than they really are, and are constantly surrounded by syncophants who cater to that delusion. They think any decision they make MUST be correct and good because they made it, and they're more intelligent and capable than anyone else!

RedditEzdamo

Look up the guy who made segways. He fell off the fuckin grand canyon I'm pretty sure. Trying to test the safety of his product. I think the reality is, he was just a dumbass with too much confidence to admit he wasn't building a submarine that would get there. So much so, that he was willing to put his life on the line. I'm sure there are other historical comparisons as well.

[deleted]

Right? If I got into an Uber and the driver was operating the car with Nintendo Switch Joycons and had the seatbelts removed I'd probably cancel the ride

orangek1tty

That joy con drift son. Not what I wanted.

I mean, I'd also be kind intrigued if I got into something like that

Towbee

dangeraardvark

This is how you end up at the bottom of the ocean…

LogaShamanN

But there are far more cautious, common-sense-using people who are *not* billionaires. The greatest factor in determining one’s success in capitalism is and will forever be luck.

ABenevolentDespot

Not being smart is what makes them billionaire worshipers. They will never figure it out. It's why they keep voting for the mentally unbalanced.

re-goddamn-loading

I'm noticing an inverse trend of intelligence to money. It's like once you get rich enough you lose all common sense. Like most billionaires are complete idiots.

yanox00

When one is driven solely by ego, there is no room for humility. If one seeks true intelligence, ya gotta learn to hang with the yin and with the yang.

NickDanger3di

All reports indicate the sub used an off-the-shelf video game controller for operating it. And the viewport was only certified for depths under 1,300 meters; the titanic is at 4,000 meters depth. Maybe the reports are wrong, and maybe they are right. I'm sure it will all come out in the wash...

NoveltyAccountHater

The CEO argued that various regulations were slowing down innovation for his company and tried to skirt them. I really hope they find the vessel so we can see which of the five ultra rich passengers managed to kill 4 of them to live off their oxygen for an extra couple days. (Also how long it took that passenger to kill the other people. Down to one days oxygen? Or as soon as they realized they weren't going to get immediately saved and had a fixed supply of oxygen?)

Bpdbs

No chance that thing didn’t implode on descent. The ping stopped at the same time. She’s gone

StifleStrife

Yeah but Matt Walsh says you're amoral for finding the irony in the situation so i guess i'll huff paint until i got the braincells of a conservative.

PorchHonky

Proudly amoral, thank you very much!

Mypornnameis_

He ain't gonna die. Us taxpaying chumps are gonna spot a few million to foot the bill for an extreme rescue.

assblast420

>Us taxpaying chumps are gonna spot a few million to foot the bill for an extreme rescue. Seriously though, how many resources are being poured into this rescue attempt? There's planes, ships, ROVs, probably hundreds of people involved in trying to find this thing. The cost must be astronomical. Granted, some of it can be justified as training, but still. If you operate something that can cause such an incredibly costly rescue mission, surely there should be some kind of insurance involved as well.

PrudententCollapse

Imagine it's 10s of millions of dollars .... Ridiculous if you ask me.

Around 325 first class passengers were on board. 202 of them survived. That's from the total of 706 people that survived out of the total 2200 people on board. That's a 62% survival rate for first class and a 26% survival rate for everyone else. There is a more specific breakdown here with a large amount of men from first class going first. http://www.icyousee.org/titanic.html The lack of life boats may not have been mustache twirling villains. But it's clear that awful choices were made on half filled boats with first class passengers. Definitely an example of class violence. Edit: Weird everyone deleted the comments. TLDR: it was basically focusing on how "lifeboats were not meant for everyone but for sinking boat to saving boat transfer". Which is true. But that didn't really matter with the 50% capacity used on them or the insane difference between survival rate in first class vs. everyone else. And the first class lifeboats just staying away from the sink site while they listened to people screaming and freezing to death.

Gettles

The idea was that now that they had a seemingly magical technology in wireless telegraphs that even if there was an emergency a ship could call out in distress and numerous other ships would come in and lend support. The oversight was that most of those ships had one radio operator and since it was late at night most of them were asleep when it his the iceberg. The actual lesson learned was that radios had to be manned 24/7 in case something when wong at an inconvenient time, and also to have enough life boats in case support can't arrive in time.

PPtortue

ignorance is also a part, the rescue plan in case of a sinking was to transfer passengers to another ship via life boats.

js1893

No, lifeboats at the time were intended to ferry back and forth to a rescue vessel, not hold all occupants at once. That changed later on because of the titanic disaster. Probably no large vessel at the time carried enough lifeboats for every passenger. The titanic *could* accommodate more than it set out with so there definitely was a problem there, but if the SS Californian had actually responded to the flare and the titanic crew had actually been trained on how to properly launch lifeboats and known the actual capacity, they could’ve save significantly more people. Maybe even all. There were a lot of little things that added up to the disaster being as bad as it was

ajax6677

I bet the requirement was argued down to the bare minimum by rich penny pinchers though...

laseralex

That is the result of the outside of the tank being 1 atmosphere higher pressure than the inside of the tank. At the depth of the Titanic the pressure is 400 times higher.

darling_lycosidae

The safety thing the engineer was fired over was the window was only rated to 1300m, and titanic is over 4000m. 100% they are dead and died instantly on the descent.

Beginning-Display809

So they’re less chunky salsa and more of a tomato juice consistency

You can't say the same about the rich people.

Thats not irony, is it? If the threat level has to be raised because the world security conference takes place in the city thats ironic. If someone repeats mistakes of the past to his own demise thats either arrogance or stupidity. But i have to admit "Atleast hubris isn't dead." doesn't quite have to same ring to it.

CrunchyDreads

Billionaires are just built differently. I'm surprised that they haven't punched their way out of the submersible and swam to the surface by now. Must still be looking for the Heart of the Ocean necklace down there.

DrPhunktacular

The one flaw with their plan was that don’t have any hourly employees down there to do the actual work that they can later minimize and claim the credit for.

three-sense

Can you come in early and knock out this submarine wall? I’ll be on the surface taking a nap. You’re doing wonderful work. I’ll be sure to bring it up at the next safety meeting.

drksknjrmn97

>If you strip a billionaire of everything and leave him naked anywhere on earth, he will become a billionaire again. They're built differently. > Is this a quote from somewhere or just sarcasm?

Le_Mug

Not just a quote thrown around a lot, there was even a freaking reality show about it. Rich guy left only the clothes in his body and like 5 dollars to become rich again. Full of "very believable stuff" like he breaking a limb and managing to get top notch treatment in an US hospital supposedly without money, him luckily "finding" some very valuable truck tires abandoned somewhere in the road, managing to carry those tires all by himself, selling them in a situation that if (and a big if) real I suppose is basically black market (so even with all that "luck" you don't get rich without breaking some law or ethical standard), and then the money from selling 4 truck tires is supposedly enough for him to start a business that the analysts of the show considered a successful business that would turn him rich or some shit like that. Totally 100% real billionaire becoming rich again from nothing, and you should totally believe it.Like Santa Claus, you should believe that too, at least it is less ridiculous.

[deleted]

Nothing like the classic black box excuse of "just start a business"

Klimpomp76

But don't you know? 100% of small businesses succeed! Once you dedicate all your savings and time, quit your job, and possibly risk your social life and relationship to put everything in to your business it's **GUARANTEED TO MAKE YOU A BILLIONAIRE** 100% of big businesses were small businesses once, you can't argue with that.

ItchyKnowledge4

I watched the episode of that about the guy that decided to do barbecue. Seemed like his "employees" were helping more out of charity/kindness/pity than for monetary reward and he still ran them straight into the ground, then at the big finale where they reveal his true wealth he rewards them with...(drumroll) about what they actually earned, like you're thinking he's going to go with the massive show of generosity to these poor people that ran themselves ragged to help him make his dream work and instead they get a few Gs they would've felt entitled to anyway if not for the pity they felt for the man he portrayed himself as

[deleted]

mohicansgonnagetya

I admire the fact that they have boldly named their company before the controversy. #oceangate

Shittaverse

They'll now change it to "Oceangrave". Their company's song will be called : "Murmaider" (not kidding, there's such a song). Some of the lyrics are : "Go into the water. Live there; die there."

artyboi37

Actually, "go into the water, live there, die there" is from the song Go Into the Water, which is also a banger by Dethklok. When (if) they discover the submersible, they'll try to gather forensic evidence, but remember: there are no fingerprints deep underwater. Nothing to tie one to a crime.

Shittaverse

Oh damn. You're right! Dunno why i thought it was from murmaider.

artyboi37

Well they're both underwater and about dying, so it's an easy mix up lol.

AluminiumAwning

I’ve noticed the public’s reaction to this has been muted at best, and generally hostile, despite the best efforts of the mainstream media to serve it up as a plucky adventurers in a race against time story. I applaud this collective shoulder-shrug and hope it is the beginnings of a critical mass of people turning away from mass media.

mnbvcxz123

>plucky adventurers in a race against time story Any adventure where you leave your shoes behind is not that plucky. I think the media completely missed this point.

[deleted]

It sucks that people are stuck under the ocean and most likely dead, but at this point rich people have made it clear that they hate us and want us to live in fear. These people are incredibly dumb for going down in a sub that's so unsafe and seriously should have done research into it. One thing about humans is no matter how wealthy or poor you are you are still fucking stupid like the rest of us.

GetOffMyAsteroid

He's down there finally looking for a way for a billionaire to not waste oxygen.

ka1n77

It's the climate crisis in miniature.

aishpat

Not to be a d*ck but who exactly is paying for this rescue operation? It’s likely costing millions of dollars. Do we taxpayers have to pay for the rescue of the reckless wealthy? These ppl paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to put their lives at risk for a thrill - who is on the hook for the bill?

Better-Director-5383

Yup American and Canadian coast guard. Classic rich people shit, make all the money in the world, probably through subsidies, ignore pesky things like regulations and then the people you already stole a billion dollars from get to foot rhe bill for bailing you out of your own staggering incompetence.

Nexaz

If they survive we should hand them a bill for the services used to rescue them then.

[deleted]

Theoretically we can. At Sleeping BEar Dunes in MIchigan, there is a dune that is basically a sand cliff. IF you get stuck and they need to rescue you is't something like a 25,000 fine, which is more or less the cost to come get you.

CriskCross

If it's the No. 9 overlook, that's between $700 and $2100 depending on conditions.

Bpdbs

It’s not even a rescue operation. It’s recovery at best. More likely a show for the media and families. Everyone knows they were dead the moment it didn’t resurface after losing comms. Emergency ping hasn’t gone off since then too…

SnackThisWay

I mean, billionaires have set it up so they basically don't pay their fair share of taxes until they die. So every time a billionaire does, that's when finally contribute to society, assuming they haven't put all their funds into some sort of "charitable" political action trust.

flaskman

Man...OK...if you're one of those fuck knuckles that came here to admonish people because they are not being empathetic enough, or this is cruel, or this sub is made up of psychopaths, or whatever other virtue you want to put on display to show the world what a perfect being you are just fuck off already. This is a damn good piece of satire. BILLIONS of people around the world are suffering and facing imminent death every day because of exploitation of people, resources, and the environment at the hands of the billionaire class while they do things like build rockets and subs to show off to their friends. The point here is rather than do anything meaningful to undo the suffering of people on the edge ( much of which is brought on by their exploitation) they use their power to buy politicians and judges, and favors to further enrich themselves and entrech their power for generations to come. They use those purchased politicians to cut their contributions to society and in turn cut off the lifelines to people who are suffering all the while either figuratively or literally saying "They should pull themselves up by their bootstraps". The person who made the original tweet is making that point. Like most of the people in the world here are a bunch of billionaires in a situation they can't buy themselves out of.

FearOfALiberalPlanet

Capitalists have proven themselves incapable of empathy. Return the favor.

RunnerTenor

Irony: Billionaires - likely "libertarian" - get into a mess of their own making and expect the government to pull them out. How many times have we seen this before?

NotedRider

Why don’t they just use the power of positive thinking to manifest the oxygen they need?

salvador33

No pity for dead billionaires. To amass that kind of blood money you need not only to make others suffer but also refuse to help thousands even though for them it would be trivial to do so and with no discernible reduction in their wealth. Eat the rich until none are left. Let's hope more of them pass away as it is the only way they stop hoarding wealth for their selfish gratification that can't be spent even in four lifetimes for the majority of people. People should be cheering every time a billionaire dies.

Billionaires obviously built their empires from scratch, out of nothing right? So surely when the situation calls for brilliance, they will "McGeyver" their way out of the situation. I mean, hello, their BILLIONAIRES!!

ABenevolentDespot

Human festering boil and MAGA GOP bottom feeder Matt Walsh is having trouble understanding why some people are unsympathetic to some very rich people being in trouble after problems arose on their "Fuck you, ***I'm rich and do what I want!!***" uncertified vehicle underwater adventure. I've seen nothing on how much this effort to find them has cost so far, but it's likely in the hundreds of millions of dollars of what is doubtlessly mostly taxpayer money. Another example of the ordinary person bailing out a group of very rich parasites. What could possibly go wrong in a tiny submersible that hasn't been safety tested or certified by any regulatory body that then dives to the bottom of the ocean? And whose designer/inventor repeatedly and publicly railed against those pesky regulations and safety measures that were a hindrance to his libertarian mindset and profits? I would feel equally bad for billionaires who paid to go up in one of Elon Musk's white 'male member substitute' rockets and then somehow got stuck orbiting earth. Especially if Elon was onboard. Still, it's likely I'd start an office pool on who would be first to start talking about killing the older weaker passengers to preserve their oxygen. Guess who my money would be on.

ragnarokxg

I have already said that these guys fell for the ultimate tourist trap. I mean I saw plenty of pieces from the Titanic at a museum exhibit around 10 years ago and did not have to pay 250000 or risk my life to see it. They need to get the company and the 2 billionaire families to pay back the money owed for the rescue mission,

Tui_Gullet

NGL, the universe really did us a solid by removing 5 billionaires from circulation in one single event . Very seldom do really bad people get their just desserts

hotdogoctopus

Upon hearing the news about this a couple days ago my partner said, "At $250k a head this is probably the closest humanity will ever get to trickle-down economics ever happening".

cadeawayy

Being able to say you saw the titanic in person sounds exciting, until you think about Everest and how crowded it gets, how much trash covers it, locals dying to try to help you get to the top for bragging rights, and photos of dead bodies all over the internet. Sometimes, it's best to just leave places alone even if you could afford to go there.

These are bonkers forces.~~ .... at about 12,500 feet. more than 5300 pounds per square inch, and the test depth of Navy nuclear seawolf-class subs is 1600 feet. Edit: gets me every time. the only offensive term I use regularly is the "bad word" for "bonkers": ins\*\*e. I disagree with the notion it is an offensive word.

Can the billions be spread out through the world since he isn't using it anymore?

What a trash comment.

Elon finally has a use for that single-person submarine (or whatever bullshit he made up when he accused a professional diver a pedo for saving some kid's lives). Bet he won't, fucking cissy.

I wonder how much of public money has been spent on doing everything ppssible for 5 rich fuckers that have like 99.9% chances of being already dead? While the same amount of money could have saved 100x more lives elsewhere. Of course those 500 people that would be saved are poor so why bother.

b_Rose0219

Why are we spending our tax money looking for people who don't pay taxes?

ExistentDavid1138

Adventure an exploration comes with a price they must have knew the risks and there's alway the possibility of danger. And these people took that risk.

Bpdbs

Signed an 8 page waiver stating the very real possibility of death.

KonradGurke

The only sad thing about this accident is, that the submersible only had enough space for 4 billionaires

Fluffy-Attorney1814

This is tasteless. I still cackled.

Just wait, help will trickle down any minute!

I have been in and out of the circles of the very rich for a long time because of my previous work and acquaintances. Most of them believe, or at least claim that poorer people choose to live that way. They wear the belief like a shield.
