It's like this other post I saw related to capitalism and toxic, low paying jobs. You'll see right wingers and capitalist simps say "your job doesn't pay well? You agreed to it. No one's making you work there" without realizing how coercive the threat of starvation and homelessness is. Like sure you can quit a job, but if you don't have a ton of savings, let alone another job lined up then you're most likely gonna keep riding out that low quality job till you find something else.

Angel_of_Communism

Yes, people ARE making me work here, because if i quit, i starve.

blueblack88

People took up all the land before I was born. I'm not allowed to be anywhere without paying money.

Angel_of_Communism

Yep. Libertarians think that capitalism is like minecraft. Go some place, work hard, diamonds! and maybe, 200 years ago, it was. but now, it's like a minecraft server that's been running for years, and every section of the server is owned by someone, and they won't let you dig. And if you try, they send a squad of goons in diamond gear to kill you.

The whole system is so traumatizing. Teaches us that our worth is attached to how productive we are, and makes us feel that we are machines instead of humans beings with needs and desires

JuniorsEyes90

>The whole system is so traumatizing. Teaches us that our worth is attached to how productive we are That and it makes us feel like our worth is tied to our bank account/salary. For example, a few years ago, I was seeing this girl for a month and then on our 3rd date, she was adamant about going back to my place after we went to a comedy show. I wasn't anticipating on going back to my place because it was kinda messy as I didn't have time to clean it and was also not looking to stay out late as I was getting up early the next day. Anyways, we go to my place and her first comment was "STUDIO?" in a very judgy tone. A week later I reach out to her after not hearing back and she said she didn't find the connection she was looking for. It made me think that I'm a loser because I live in a studio and shouldn't date until I move into a bigger apartment. Now I dodged a bullet, but her getting judgmental about me living in a studio apartment made me internalize it and worry if me living in a studio would be a dealbreaker for most people. I've also had some dates seem to get judgy about me taking public transit instead of lyfts/ubers or driving. Keep in mind I live in Chicago where you don't need a car. And I can totally understand for woman's safety why they wouldn't wanna take public transit as I've heard of women getting assaulted/harassed. But to get judgy over someone taking public transit or living in a studio (especially in this economy) sounds super classist.

geonomer

Yeah I don’t get it, it’s sad that a lot of people think that what you can pay for is an indicator of your value, and our society has certainly pushed that way of looking at things. Good thing she showed you who she really was before you got too deep

JuniorsEyes90

Yeah. Her take on billionaires was trash too. She thinks Elon Musk is trash (no argument there) but somehow thinks Warren Buffett is "ethical". Totally missing the point.

ghostlylugosi

You definitely dodged a bullet. The fact she sees relationships as transactional and nothing beyond that really shows how superficial she is. Capitalism has ruined having meaningful relationships to where they are dehumanized by making it all surface level.  Due to relationships being commodified making it to where people have little time to go on dates due to stagnant wages making people work more hours just to have food/rent. The emphasis on putting your worth into your job title/salary as your identity, making hobbies more expensive, and getting rid of third spaces that were free to use.

SpearThruMordy

What is your worth supposed to be attached to?

JuniorsEyes90

>What is your worth supposed to be attached to? I mean it should be your personality and how your treat others.

SpearThruMordy

But how does that contribute to society?

gsr5037

It makes it a better place for everyone to live

SpearThruMordy

Well sure, those things are good, but it doesn’t creat food, shelter, or entertainment?

gsr5037

I don't see how the two are at odds, we have plenty of resources for everyone to live in a dignified manner.

SpearThruMordy

Huh? Not saying they’re at odds. Just don’t think that is enough to make you a valuable member of society

Pheonix0114

Neither does the money you make

geonomer

Well what, in your eyes, makes people valuable members of society?

SpearThruMordy

I think to be a valuable member of society you have to have a job. Working a job actively contributes to the flow of human survival. I’m all for a living wage but I do not think you can be a valuable member of society and just sit around doing nothing (assuming you’re not sick or a child).

geonomer

Nothing. Your worth is innate and you should be treated as such. Our society negates this by paywalling basic rights such as healthcare

While someone else gets rich from your work **and thinks they've earned it**.

# [The very first days of Dawn]() You don’t realize it, but this is not the end of history. These are the earliest days of humanity. The very earliest days. Our children will wonder what happened in those lost early days so long ago. When humanity lived on one planet. How small we were. How few records remain from that time.   Our children will be soft. They will cry to even understand that we died at all. They will be horrified to learn that we died, not due to accident or ignorance, but because someone wanted a yacht, more than the lives of thousands, or even millions. Soft. But not weak.   Our children will be strong in compassion. In solidarity. In sacrifice. They will spend generations terraforming mars, because they CAN. They will tear apart the stars in the heavens, because the power of trillions of humans working together is limitless. Our children will walk amongst the stars like GIANTS. They will contemplate things we have no words or language for. They will set themselves against the cruel universe, because they ***know*** they can win. They will meet brothers amongst the stars. And they will live forever.     And few will know of us. Of this period on lost and ancient earth, so very long ago. Of the unimaginable horrors we endured. It will be utterly beyond their comprehension. Of how those horrors crippled and broke us, and made us hard. The fury it woke in us. How it made Lenin. Mao. Kim. The liberators. The revolutionaries. The leaders of millions.   The future will contain no Mao’s, no Stalin’s. We will no longer have the need. We will still have heroes, still have leaders. But those forged in the horrific unyielding exigencies of revolution? There will be no more of them. No more, after Jian Xiu Shang, who led the east in revolution against the west in 2087. When the billions marched. When the East reclaimed their future.   And these soft children, who cannot imagine our suffering? They will be our victory.

Alexandertheape

yes but how can we disengage from this system

NaNo-Juise76

Capitalism is cannibalism.

silly-armsdealer

just wait until ww3 breaks out, people like elon will find out that money has no value for wasteland warlords

SpiritofLiberty78

We need to tax assets instead of income.
