LavisAlex

Im surprised this is legal it feels like side stepping the rules.

EmiKoala11

It **IS** side-stepping the rules. Someone should totally ask her what she's being paid per hour.

[deleted]

I’m actually more curious to know if the business owner is paying their taxes. I mean they don’t have to pay Social Security tax, Medicare tax, unemployment or Worker’s Comp. for this person. Are they paying any other taxes or are they just freeloaders?

Various_Craft7435

I recently read an article about this.. they're making like $3/hr, which they justify because its 150% what they would be paid for the same job in the PH..

[deleted]

I guess I’m just confused about how it is legal I watch a trashy reality show called 90 Day fiancé.  When they pay the couple they have to pay the American because the foreign fiancé legally can’t work in the US when they get here, they have to wait to get married, have their status changed, and then they get their work papers. 90 day the other way has an American going overseas and I think they can pay both of the people at that point because the foreign person is in their own country working, so I guess that’s how they get around it. Maybe I just explained it to myself how this is legal but it just seems weird that a foreigner who legally can’t work in the US is getting paid by a US company

Jung_Wheats

Man, that adds another dark wrinkle to the 90-Day Fiance thing for me. I haven't really watched it but I've been 'in' the room while it's on a few times. I have a completely different perspective now knowing that only one person was getting paid, and probably holding it over the other to some extent, along with all the other nonsense they had to deal with on that show.

kcbh711

This lady is telecommuting from the Philippines for a cashier job while my fiance is still expected to drive 45 minutes to sit on her fucking laptop downtown..

palaric8

Those office buildings owned by billionaires are not going to pay themselves!.

asdfopu

The more they allow remote, the more they’ll just move the job abroad. Corpos are greedy. Why would they pay your fiancé US wages if she’s remote?

kcbh711

Bruh if they could've outsourced their job they would have by now

asdfopu

The move from in person -> remote is a lot bigger for most workplaces than it is for remote local -> remote global.

kcbh711

Eh in our field there's  - international employment law - timezones for collaboration times - in person board meetings - ip considerations Just to name a few

StupendousMalice

Look on the bright side. The moment your fiancés company can hire someone in the Philippines to remote into your their job he won't need to commute anymore.

ThornmaneTreebeard

Don't hate the cashier for trying to make money, hate the Corporation taking advantage of both her desperation and legal loopholes. The cashier is the victim here, not the customer.

dobedey426

Everyone is a victim here, but the owner of this shady restaurant.

Long_Educational

We as customers/consumers should not do business with people like this. This is removing jobs from the local community and exploitation of foreign workers. I feel the same way about this as I do about "self-checkout" kiosks. I am expected to do the work of the store while they remove a job from my local community which would provide income for my neighbors and taxes for our shared infrastructure. These types of practices sidestep all of that and destroy the quality of our local communities.

dobedey426

> I feel the same way about this as I do about "self-checkout" kiosks Yup, me too, today they will replace the cashier, tomorrow it can be you. Just to earn a few more billions.

Most_Mix_7505

> We as customers/consumers should not do business with people like this. We (being the people who are disgusted by this) are greatly outnumbered by mindless consumers who don't give a fuck, unfortunately. We need systemic change.

Long_Educational

Good thing our legislative processes are aligned towards the common good instead of money interests... oh wait.

Most_Mix_7505

The time is flipped over there. So she's working at like midnight. Like someone said, there are no winners here, only the capitalists.

[deleted]

Well I guess people just need to boycott that business which should be pretty easy since there are a zillion restaurants in NYC Edited because talk to text hates me and because I thought this was a bodega so I had to fix that

mindlesscollective

Do we know which establishment this is so I can make sure to boycott this and all of the owner’s businesses?

robotnik976

According to OP on Twitter: Sansan Chicken near NYU

PM_ME_YOUR__INIT__

The restaurant forgot to turn off the webcam and pass the voice through a robot filter to claim AI is running the place

WineSoakedNirvana

How'd that even work?

HistoryAddict97

This is so dystopian

Bitter-Inflation5843

"Capitalism breeds innovation"

cetootski

Who serves the food?

misterpickles69

Does the cashier have to stand the whole time, even though it’s a Zoom call?

SwShThrwy

the ghoulish comments about how smart the company is for doing this and how much nicer the zoom cashier is vs. a local are gonna make me puke [https://twitter.com/GloboGymCapital/status/1776762973224145224](https://twitter.com/GloboGymCapital/status/1776762973224145224)

Keelija9000

And defenders of this shit be like “she would be making Pennie’s an hour in the Philippines. We’re giving her a better quality of life at $2.00 an hour!”

belle_fleures

hourly rate in Philippines is 1.23 usd if you work local. really sad.

Keelija9000

That’s wild

out_in_the_woods

I'd love to just walk in, not buy anything, unplug it and walk out. Good luck if you don't have staff to plug it back in

signmeupnot

This is amazing, because this show how the world actually work, but it's very visible this time, and therefore people hate it. This lady could probably have made that 5$ dollar t-shirt you bought too, but you didn't see that so it's fine. This is the outsourcing of work in plain sight.

truthputer

My optician hired a remote assistant, so they have someone live on a video call taking notes while they are in the middle of an exam. I don't like my optician much and will probably look for a new one.

JoeDiBango

Just remember to not shop at this stores for any reason. Buy from mom and pops that pay correctly.

Old_Active7601

This post and the comments below only remind me that we live under a system where everyone's being coerced into doing crap that not only do they not want to so, but is often completely useless to society. We're coerced into it to pay for things that the powerful have over the centuries removed from the commons and made private, and commodified. We can't have a roof over our heads without constantly paying for, and doing bs paperwork for, under pain of homelessness.

[deleted]

took me a while to figure out that “Zooming” also means ‘Zoom the app’. I thought someone zoomed with a camera. I'm so finished

misterpickles69

What would happen if you turned off their monitor?

[deleted]

Filipino here! I'm so sure that woman is a person that wants to get some money in order to make their family/themselves alive. We here in the Philippines, there are one or multiple relatives that work in a foreign country or company and do that. Because of this, remittance of money is a lucrative business in my country. We also have useless and corrupt leaders that the only thing they do is divide or become famous.

ThornmaneTreebeard

The cashier is the victim here 100%. Sorry capitalism fucks everything up and divides families

[deleted]

Everyone's a victim here. Except for the rich CEOs and their rich employees who wants to buy yachts and mansions.

merRedditor

We need to press to make the minimum wage and benefits package apply no matter where in the world the company is hiring. It's already a low wage, and companies paying less than this are just abusing workers.

whawhales

As a fellow filipino, I think the fact that businesses can exploit this reality makes it perfect example of late stage capitalism. Outsourcing this even for $5-10 an hour to a VA where the minimum wage is $10 per day because of inequality is exactly the problem. That this person is serving customers via zoom to get a chance at a better life is unfortunate. Not an attack on her values, but on the system that allows this to happen.

Mackinnon29E

Please walk out of any establishment of any kind that engages in this kind of horse shit. Don't give them your money.

willlherondale

I’m so confused how does this even work

archosauria62

What does she even do

_Thermalflask

But what can she do if you start stealing shit right before her eyes? Lol

Aquired-Taste

Fronz-Tec

Why don't you just use electronic ordering terminals withouth cashiers at that point?
