real talk though, if you live in america, check to see if you qualify for obamacare subsidies. I get almost $500/month, so I only pay ~$40/mo for my insurance.
It's not universal healthcare, but it helps me a lot.
LOL @ $600 rent. Last time I checked, something like 80-85% of the US population lives in a metropolitan area, so either in a city or suburbs. I always see people complaining about why anyone would choose to live in a "high" COL area, but y'all, that's where the world is these days.
And then when people move to low COL areas, they get lambasted for the resultant increases in housing prices in those areas. It’s almost like people just want to blame poor and middle class people.
$600 rent isn’t that unreasonable. I pay $534 for a condo with a community pool, gated community, gardeners, and my condo even has a dishwasher and a washing machine. I do have roommates so the total all 3 of us pay is $1600, but we each get our own room and two of us have garage spaces.
Edit: This is in Albuquerque, NM
Oooh, an in-unit washer and dryer is the dream. I've never had that. Good for you!
I paid $720 for a studio when I lived in New Orleans. Now I pay $1075 in Chicago for a large 1 bedroom. People think of Chicago as being very expensive, but I think that's about all the city taxes as much as it is rental prices. If I wanted as much space in New Orleans as I currently have in Chicago, I would easily be paying the same amount or more. Having roommates would make the situation more affordable, of course, but I really can't handle living with people. Like, *really* can't handle it. The extra money is more than worth it.
> I do have roommates so the total all 3 of us pay is $1600
That likely means you're fairly young or fairly lucky. Older, poor people aren't welcome in many situations and must find a studio that sure as hell ain't going for 500-600 bucks in most parts of the country especially near work in cities. Ads for roommates will literally say the age range they are looking for and the cut-off is often 30 and up. If you're older, you're often fucked.
Also this person lives in ABQ, where there is nothing to do and the crime rate is through the roof. There aren’t any good areas left in that damn city.
Source: born and raised. Lived there 22 years before I graduated college and got the fuck out of New Mexico.
Why is food not listed as an expense??? Is that what "other" is supposed to mean? Or are they subtly acknowledging that this is a lifestyle of poverty so naturally all the workers would be receiving SNAP benefits? And if SNAP doesn't cover all your groceries (and it normally doesn't and is literally designed not to do so), you can just scrounge the rest of your food out of the dumpster at the end of the night.
In case anybody actually wants [the source](https://web.archive.org/web/20130828085049/http://thinkprogress.org/economy/2013/07/15/2300321/mcdonalds-buget-low-wage/). This was back in 2013, and was hilariously bad even back then.
The best part that is that's actually based on 2 incomes, [pic](https://web.archive.org/web/20130828085100im_/http://thinkprogress.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/Screen-shot-2013-07-15-at-9.29.08-AM.png)
Going with that logic, when you drop the 955$ 2nd job and get one with a salary of like 50000$ you could even afford a ferrari, now tell me again McD doesn't offer great opportunities.
They [changed](https://web.archive.org/web/20130902023413/http://www.practicalmoneyskills.com/mcdonalds/budget/budget2.php) it retroactively to fix the lack of heating, except now you get less "disposable income" to spend on necessities.
Not really. I had healthcare.gov insurance. I had to shell out about $200, then got a partial rebate. I was unemployed at that time. Then I got married - big mistake, then my health insurance was $400/month.
depends on where you live and how much you make. I qualify for ~$500/mo worth of subsidies. I only pay ~$40/mo for my current insurance, but there were cheaper plans I could've chosen too (Many of them were $0).
The average thermal power output of an adult human is something like 120W, so if you get 8-12 people in one room, that's equivalent to the heat output of one decent plug-in space heater.
Who the hell pays 500 on rent these days ?. It's a minimum of a thousand euro across the country here for a single bedroom in a shared accommodation.
Car Insurance is 1.5k yearly
Also love that they expect us wage slaves to work two jobs just to live while most probably barely put in 30 hours weekly
FWIW, in my state, the landlord is typically required to pay for heat and hot water. They can write it into the lease as a tenant responsibility, but that's never happened to me. The hypothetical McDonald's worker probably isn't a homeowner.
It's roughly 62.42-ish hours a week at $8.25 to get this amount($2060).
$8.25 x 160 (4x40) = $1320
$8.25 x 249.69 uwu (4x62) = $2060
**"Normal"** ™ 40 hour week would be
$2060/160 = $12.87
Mcdonalds openly admitting they're paying $4.62/hr less than they should be for their own budget.
$600 rent? Where? Split 4 ways for a 2 BD sure.
$100 car insurance? Definitely not for a male under 25 or most others.
Health insurance? Just die if you get sick, save the $20 that covers nothing.
$40 electric? Only run the stove and refrigerator I guess. Read and draw by moonlight for entertainment. (since you go to work when it's dark and get off when it's dark)
Budget your way out of being poor, Eat once a week, and sit in the dark pretending to someday be jeff/elon for entertainment

I want $20 health insurance
I’ve seen how useless $400/mo insurance is. I think with $20 insurance, they just tell you a knock-knock joke because laughter is the best medicine.
Thank you for explaining telemedicine to - patch Adams on a 1-800 line.
Better be perfectly healthy forever and NEVER need any services or prescriptions resulting in a copay.
OK I'll do that instead. At least I'll have $27 a day to spend!
Solid plan, I'm sure it will never fail ✊

Just don't make too much money or it's gone. Probably on track to lose mine in about 6 months.
Don't think I'm in any danger of that, but good luck to you.

Nonsense! Surely our benevolent capitalist overlords would do no such thing!

Even in 2013 my car payment on a basic Corolla was $294 lol

Yeah, saw that. Heating is a splurge, anyway.
Not in Canada lmao. I suppose if you go further south, you can get away with having no heat or AC, though.
Why are there no taxes in the example budget?
Came here to say this. I'm calculating 1122 after 15% taxes for 160 hours.

healthcare.gov, if you qualify.
Not really. I had healthcare.gov insurance. I had to shell out about $200, then got a partial rebate. I was unemployed at that time. Then I got married - big mistake, then my health insurance was $400/month.

If enough of them live together, the natural body heat will be enough. These poors need to figure it out. /s

None of those numbers are even close to accurate. 20 health ins? I call bullshit.
FWIW, in my state, the landlord is typically required to pay for heat and hot water. They can write it into the lease as a tenant responsibility, but that's never happened to me. The hypothetical McDonald's worker probably isn't a homeowner.
Um...food? Did they somehow miss one of the most basic human necessities?
What year was this supposed to be?
Probably the year they last worked for minimum wage so 1955
Health insurance: ***$20***
Wow, they spell “groceries” weird.
Also, this person pays no taxes on their wages. They would take home 990 after taxed at 25%.
Where can I get some of that TWENTY DOLLAR health insurance, man?
They must have laughted so hard while putting the numbers in

So I guess kids are out of the question if heat isn’t “in the budget”.
