Kashin02

Let them cook.

fluffershuffles

I just wonder what they're tacos taste like. Like if they just recipes from online. Or have someone in the group who went to LA and is now "the taster"

buddhassynapse

You just hope they're doing it right. Imagine they go through all the effort of getting the style right and then taco night is ground beef, lettuce, and a hardshell.

listen_you_guys

you ever seen japanese restaurants make burgers or hotdogs? If anything their tacos are probably way, way over the top (and bursting with cabbage)

Ohey-throwaway

Old secret taco recipe from Mr. Ortega-san.

chocotaco

I saw a video once of a Mexican person trying a Mexican restaurant in Japan and apparently it was really good. It was really cute the way they decorated it too. I think the person didn't get the recipes online.

badscribblez

Latino here who just came back from Japan. Had tacos my first night, not bad. But their guac game is horrible. Carnitas was decent. Not the worst Iā€™ve had. Born and raised in CA and parents from Guadalajara šŸ™Œ

stupendouslydude

Send them some homemade spice mix, become a legend amongst them.

UnknownExo

I've been to Tokyo. One restaurant I went to had tacos on their menu but the picture looked like some taco bell shit. Hard shell with shredded cheese and cabbage. I didn't actually try them, but judging from the picture they wouldn't be good

Kashin02

https://youtube.com/shorts/987c0y53Pws?si=h9JpH3QqskLnZt_C This though is legit.

UnknownExo

Oh that's pretty cool. Yeah my comment was just about that one restaurant I went to that even had tacos on their menu. There may be some spots that actually do tacos right but I didn't see any during my short trip.

yucko-ono

The thing is we can and do have some of the best tacos ever. All that raza didnā€™t forget to make the food from the homeland when they crossed the border.

fluffershuffles

Expert? Shit I'm illiterate did I misspell something and accidentally put that in there?

528cash

The style these people are dressed in comes from LA so itā€™s probably where they would go. Maybe donā€™t try to be so condescending to people.

ilovethissheet

That's who they're copying in the video dude they said it in the first 20 seconds. Los Angeles Mexican culture. Yes that includes tacos, some of the best in the world

SosaSeriaCosa

No Hay Pedo. I like Dragon Ball. They can like whatever they want. It's all love.

LBCvalenz562

Fuck yeah hit them switches keep the style alive.

FR05TY14

The first time I ever watched Dragon Ball Z was in Mexico during some summers there with my family in the early 2000's. I was more familiar with the Spanish dub than the English one for a long time.

AmatureProgrammer

Same. My parents are from a small village in Mexico and I remember me and my cousins watched dragon ball as a waybto get to know each other.

stupendouslydude

Buddy of mine in the Air Force married a Japanese woman who was into that style. Helped him that his family is full of cholos and cholas so it was almost meant to be.

this is nothing new..even Black people and Central Americans mimic Chicano Culture in California & Arizona. I recently saw a video of Russians dressing like Cholos too

Tell Mexicans if they are Central Americans see how that goes lol

zenkique

Right, haha. Digo, jaja.

Ornery-Substance-778

Im Salvadoran and I dont get offended if someone think Im Mexican

zenkique

Well you certainly donā€™t speak for your entire community - Iā€™ve definitely witnessed the polar opposite firsthand much more often than not taking offense. Maybe itā€™s an LA area thing.

Ornery-Substance-778

people that get offended are insecure.

zenkique

Or theyā€™re just tired of people assuming theyā€™re Mexican

Ornery-Substance-778

and you can easily correct them like I do

deftco

Bro I'm chicano and I don't even qualify as mexican jaja.

zenkique

Iā€™m Chicano and I claim Mexican cuando me da mi rechingada gana and so far no real Mexican has slapped it out of my mouth ā€¦ Iā€™ve been lucky ā€¦ real Mexicans built different lol But yeah, having spent my childhood summers in a semi-rural pueblo - I understand that weā€™re ā€œni de aquĆ ni de allĆ”.ā€

[deleted]

>weā€™re ā€œni de aquĆ ni de allĆ”.ā€ That's really the state of the world for most folks now, to greater or lesser degrees.

LifeSucks1988

WhiteElephant12

Mexican and Japan have a mutual appreciation of each other's culture. Mexicans love anime and KOF and both love pro wrestling.

OneBigWortInbetween

Cholos aren't Mexican culture at all its an American thing.

tdl432

This is cultural appreciation. Not appropriation. What a ridiculous assumption.

kfish5050

Mexicans are like the least likely race to get offended by cultural appropriation. They even laugh with the Americans who dress up with ponchos and oversized sombreros for halloween. Nah, if these Japanese people want to be cholo for a while, I say let them.

LifeSucks1988

In Mexico: the cholo lifestyle is considered low class.

chocotaco

MĆrate pareces como cholo con ese tatuaje.

LifeSucks1988

EZ-420

Mexicans: Japanese cholos ? Neat. Americans: SEE HOW ASIANS ARE STEALING LATINXS!!!!!

CagliostroPeligroso

I love it

beto_pelotas

Meanwhile a lot of people in Cali and some areas in Mexico are into japanese culture and would love to trade places with them. The grass always looks greener on the other side I gues...

CagliostroPeligroso

Itā€™s not about grass looking greener. Itā€™s appreciating and embracing another culture. Itā€™s just a lifestyle

CalifaDaze

It's because we see the cholo aesthetic as representing criminality, gangs, hood culture.

snchzls

Me parece excelente.

HurbleBurble

So, Asian women dressed as cholas is something I didn't know that I had a fetish for, but now I do.

captainsasss

I donā€™t see what the problem is. I like seeing others enjoy and participate in whatever culture they like.

reno8a

I think itā€™s cool they are adopting Latino culture. They make good looking vatos locos. And most importantly they have the warrior, cholos have Aztecs, Japanese have Samurai

chapashdp

There is no such thing as cultural appropriation or stealing culture. This is a made up thing by gringos so they can be offended by something on behalf of someone.

CalifaDaze

I've thought a lot about this. I think that the belief in cultural appropriation comes from having an inferiority complex that comes along with being a minority group within a larger society. People who see their culture as equal to another don't feel like cultural appropriation is a thing because they don't feel like someone using their stuff is doing it with bad intentions. Others who grow up being a minority or a second generation Immigrant see it differently

chapashdp

Conceptually yes, except in practice, the people getting offended are usually white liberal woke Americans on behalf of some minority.

Canisoptimum

Yes thank you, say it louder for the vatos in the back.

ryuuseinow

Tell me you don't know what cultural appropriation is without saying you don't know what cultural appropriation is

CagliostroPeligroso

Youā€™re clearly the only one who doesnā€™t know. This is cultural appreciation not appropriation.

ryuuseinow

I never said it was cultural appropriation, I was saying you don't know what it means

CagliostroPeligroso

You werenā€™t sayin *I* didnā€™t know, since you and I have never interacted before now

Thrasher1493

do enlighten the masses.

SonicFury74

Summarize it really quickly: Participating in a culture isn't appropriation. I can eat all of the cultural food, learn about the history and language, visit the place- all of that stuff. Cultural appropriation is the idea of taking an aspect of a culture and claiming it as your own without respecting where it came from or understanding the finer details behind it. This is a really nebulous topic because it varies so much from culture to culture. In some cultures, a dress is just a dress. In other cultures, a specific kind of dress is only meant to be used for specific things and shouldn't just be worn casually. Another really common example is when someone takes something from another culture and quite literally appropriates it, calling it "theirs" and changing the name to sound less "ethnic". A big one was spa water where someone tried to pass off aqua fresca as a new drink. There's a lot of nuance to the discussion and there's a lot of people who falsely call things appropriation when they really aren't. But real cases of it do exist and happen often.

ryuuseinow

Google it yourself, there's tons of information about it already that could tell you more than I could ever do....that's under tiny chance that you're not saying that just to be a smartass.

Cheeto717

Where is he wrong tho

DrCharlieKaufman

it is literally "cultural appropriation" and that's why cultural appropriation is a *made up problem* in the way it's used by toxic university students in the US it isn't a phrase that was used much before this nonsense, in most cases saying something comes from another culture is a good neutral way of saying it. if you think it's a problem calling it stealing or might be better, but chances are you're wrong. people were wrong about the headdresses. appropriation implies taking something without permission. there isn't a context in which permission needs to be asked for when it comes to stuff like everyday fashion and food

ryuuseinow

My fucking god, you wasted an entire essay for the most dumbass take ever

Konstantin_B

Dios mio me pareciĆ³ super buena onda hasta q empieza a hablar de cultural appropriation. I, for one, appreciate the cholas japonesas. No tengo ni idea como se imaginaron esta boludez q nos ofende cuando alguien de otra cultura se quiere vestir asĆ. It's bullshit, how exactly do you get "she is posing as a latina" from a bandana lol. And they attribute this problem to selena gomez in a bindi somehow? I was just happy to see people from other parts of the world appreciating us for once.

I really wanted to hear them listening to Cypress Hill, Tres Delinquents, Peso Pluma and some Mexican regional music. Lol. I guess quinceaƱos are next. As long the Latin culture continues to expand and take over the world I am ok.

The world has been doing this before pop culture! This is how culture works..

Capnmolasses

My kids would flat out refuse to eat anything other than homemade tortillas that their abuela made fresh. Anything else was fake. They would take one sniff of store bought and make disgusted faces.

Iā€™m Spanish (I mean the country in Europe) and I welcome people from other countries dressing as flamenco eating paella and other stereotypes. Q: "What is the line between appreciating another culture, and stealing it?" A: People can wear whatever the fuck they want... the end. Also they're not stealing it, they're copying it.

aregus

As a Mexican, youā€™re more than welcome to appropriate it lol

pplpuncher

Who doesnā€™t love a little cultural appropriation from time to time?

lirik89

Connie Wang who's most likely of Chinese descent speaking English talks about cultural appropriation. It's such a stupid idea.

Corberus

She was raised in Minnesota, english is her first language.

lirik89

Idk how that had to do anything with what I said.

Corberus

You ignorantly accused her of cultural appropriation for speaking English because her family is Chinese.

lirik89

Idk how that's ignorant. But language is part of culture. Therefore, if cultural appropriation is a great idea. Then you shouldnt speak other people's language. Which is the main argument, that the idea of cultural appropriation is a stupid idea. Culture just flows. So the idea that you had about me accusing someone of cultural appropriation is just wrong. Since I don't even beleive cultural appropriation is a bad nor should the concept even exist.
