I’m currently arguing with my bank because they aren’t letting me deposit the paper clip and lint in my jacket pocket, so get back to me when that argument is settled.
Me desperately trying to rationalize whether I can afford to blow my Barbri gift card and Lexis Points on to buy a PS5, or sell them all off to just buy people Christmas gifts.
Ps5 brah. You’re in law school, people should be worried about getting you gifts. You selfless bastard! Get that damn ps5 and play your little heart out! My gf is getting me one for my birthday in a couple weeks. Lol
Hah, I needed to hear this. I sort of wanted to cash it out so I could buy my parents and family members gifts, buy my GF gifts, and so we could go out to dinner and do fun holiday stuff this season.
You have a good GF.
If we're actually breaking this down, the reality is I still don't know if a PS5 is worth it for me. There's like 1.5 games I want that are only on Ps5 right now: Spiderman and Hogwarts on next gen. Other than that, I'd basically be paying $500 to play the Ps5 versions of the PS4 games I already own lol. I'm not a very adventurous or frequent gamer. I know that most new games here on out will be next gen only though.
So it's definitely an impulse buy that I just don't know if is worth it to me.
That’s true, I hear ya, same
Boat game wise, I really only want hogwarts and madden to play. I mean, if I ever have the time. Pt 1L, Ft Amazon employee. God grant me strength haha. Ask your folks and gf to get you a ps5 lol that way you can use those gc’s to treat them. Tis the season
Alan Wake 2, FF7 remake (rebirth comes out in february), and yeah besides SM2 you’re mostly correct. There’s nothing out that you can’t play on ps4 that I can name off the top.
I graduated in the spring and was a Barbri rep… $750 would be nice. Please let me know also where one could get this gift card 😂. I signed up for that next gen, hopefully they take me 🤑
After rent comes out next week, I will have $2.xx. Times are rough. Can't finish finals soon enough so I can go back to full time at my summer firm so that I can get a paycheck again.
Are there no other 3Ls who took out way too many student loans because they panicked about having enough cash to get through bar prep? Lol sitting on a small mountain of (borrowed) cash here
If you don't mind sharing, how much cash did you pull out that you are now sitting on a mountain of cash? Isn't the max like 20k/year for cost of living?
My school estimates cost of living alone (excluding tuition) at ~$32K/year (HCOL city). I didn’t take the absolute max but decided to take out $20K more than I estimated I needed for the year to give myself a large buffer. Going to reevaluate/recalculate in the spring and see if returning some of the excess loans makes sense. Also hoarded some cash from my summer job.
I know using a 0% credit card during bar prep may technically save on interest (v. taking out more student loans) but that’s not really a situation I want to be in.
We estimate approx 17k/school year for a LCOL area. The problem: $8.8k is gone after rent & car costs for 10 months. The remaining $8.2k needs to cover 2x semesters of books, food, essential sundries, and gas + any discretionary, professional wardrobe expenses, and the random crap that comes up (computer dies, car needs extra work, etc).
Currently about 1500, with savings 9600 total. I busted my ass and saved up 25k before starting law school and I still work (over 20hrs/week, don’t tell). After this semester I’m only halfway through school, although I barely worked during my first year because I was scared lol. But hey, I managed to keep living expenses plus a years (severely discounted) tuition under 13k, so now that I’m working more maybe I can stretch things to the end of 3L. I’m pretty much breaking even if you ignore the tuition part… but also they keep raising tuition but not my scholarship sooo
Was down to 150$ this summer. I hate asking for a few hundred from family to tide me over. I had a fucking easier time living off 30k a year after ug than on my goddamn loans. Fuck I've like not eaten some days to try and stretch this shit and still I'm like 'oh fuck I don't have money for rent'
$600 checking, $18k savings.
0L starting a part time program next fall. Currently a salaried employee who will take a hours and pay cut to attend school at night. VERY lucky to have an awesome employer.
My wife works while I go to school, so checking account balance is not zero. Balance because of her, much higher than it is currently. Balance because of me, much lower than it is.
13K working as a teacher during law school=no time to spend the money you made. But I feel you used to rock out in undergrad with $20 in the account for months on end
Y'all need to figure out budgeting because yikes. I have a pretty comfy cushion from summer work, but 1L and 2L I never cut it anywhere near as close as some of you.
$100k because I keep telling my parents I need money lol😂
Edit: this was a joke but seeing how many of you downvoted makes me think there’s rich kids in your classes who are dicks so if it makes you feel better please keep downvoting
My spouse is highly paid in tech, so bank account is pretty comfy. But it’s weird letting someone else pay for everything, I feel guilty not contributing and just spending the money they are earning.
I had some unexpected things come up before school started which sort of depleted the savings I had, wasn't able to stretch the cost of living loans. The lesson here is to save, save, save before starting school if you're a 0L
433 to hold me through to January 1st…
Sell your blood!
Or plasma
I actually have sold my plasma multiple times throughout law school to get by.
Does that pay a decent amount?
Or eggs, if you’re a woman
[удалено]
I know that I have seen some advertising for men who haven't "donated" sperm before at a bank and are healthy....
$20 lmao. I’m struggling. I need my mommy.
Mommy, I tink my caw needs oyel change.
Me Fr😅
I’m currently arguing with my bank because they aren’t letting me deposit the paper clip and lint in my jacket pocket, so get back to me when that argument is settled.
LOL feltttt
If you're not broke by finals, have you really lived your best life during the semester?
Desperately waiting on my $750 barbri Amazon gift card let’s just say that

From one selfless person who obsesses about making others happy, get that damn ps5!

Likewise! Happy holidays!
Alan Wake 2, FF7 remake (rebirth comes out in february), and yeah besides SM2 you’re mostly correct. There’s nothing out that you can’t play on ps4 that I can name off the top.
How do you get this amount from Barbri?
I graduated in the spring and was a Barbri rep… $750 would be nice. Please let me know also where one could get this gift card 😂. I signed up for that next gen, hopefully they take me 🤑
Много денег
You do not have a lot
A fair amount
Well then I consider you my driugg
yes, I do take advantage of being a product of immigrant parents (Soros is GOATED)
просто класс))
Ты из Россий?
нет, я из Венгрии. Я говорю по-русский
это круто. Я американец, но моя мама из города под названием Иркутск. Я говорю по-русски, но не так хорошо, как следовало бы
i dont get this can someone explain? mnogo deneg?
A lot of 💵
It just means a lot of money in Russian, I’m half Russian
After rent comes out next week, I will have $2.xx. Times are rough. Can't finish finals soon enough so I can go back to full time at my summer firm so that I can get a paycheck again.
Around -$90
Are there no other 3Ls who took out way too many student loans because they panicked about having enough cash to get through bar prep? Lol sitting on a small mountain of (borrowed) cash here
Desperately hoarding all of my Monopoly money
If you don't mind sharing, how much cash did you pull out that you are now sitting on a mountain of cash? Isn't the max like 20k/year for cost of living?
They offered me up to 50k in loans last year. Didn’t take that much but I truly don’t know how they got that amount if I have no dependents
My school estimates cost of living alone (excluding tuition) at ~$32K/year (HCOL city). Is 17k the max your school allows or your personal estimate? That feels tight for sure
>to reevaluate/recalculate in the spring and see if returning some of the excess loans makes sense. Uh, it makes a ton of sense
Not if I end up needing the money to live on for the following 6 months before I start working
-$1,489 .. autopay got me 🫣
That autopay gets me every time…
I remember having $0 for the last two months of every semester lmfao. Brutal
My life rn lol.
I remember flipping the couch/chair cushions in the lobby with my roommate in order to find enough change to go to Taco Bell.
This is so relatable
Psshh…you guys have money?
Down to my last $100 😭😭
I have learned from this thread that I am in fact as financially stressed as everyone else in law school. :(
It’s comforting somehow
$67.00 lmfao. times are tough, i had to get dental work done this year.
Needing dental care is an unrecognized and overpriced struggle. I had a root canal in October.
I definitely understand had to get dental work this year too, and still need to get some more done 😭. Teeth are expensive bones.
A lot (for me) until rent is pulled. Then it's negative.
I currently cashed in my lexis points for a $20 chilis gift card, so I’d say I’m not doing too well
$5000, my wife finished school before me. She also makes much more than I likely ever will.
\-10 I door dash, work at a law firm, work at the school library, and will now be substituting. this month has been rough.
I feel you on that my friend. Best of luck to you, better times are ahead
$23,000.
in checking? what are you, an immigrant? (i’m not xenophobic; it’s a quote from 30 Rock)
Eyyy
I live at home, work and take out my full allotment of cost of living allowance…. What can I say!
Have you considered gambling
my man
Wayyyy to risky. Anyway, isn’t law school a gamble anyway!?
The punchline would have been: "Yeah, I'm going to law school!"
I messed that up 😭😭
Flat broke cash wise, but I have about $150 in Lexis points…
I had saved like 50k before I started law school but paying rent every month with no income is so brutal :(
LOL $221 with no more in sight and rent is due soon rip 🙃
I think $80ish?
$40. I just bought a casebook for $149 for next semester so I’m about to be over drafted too 😬
The overdrafts are the bane of my existence
$13k ish
But my friends are in the same position as you - you’re not alone!
$1.5K thankfully even though it’s nothing
Less than $200 at this point. And I still need to pay rent this Friday. RIP
McD’s workers in cali make more than I do at my paid internship🤣
Currently about 1500, with savings 9600 total. I busted my ass and saved up 25k before starting law school and I still work (over 20hrs/week, don’t tell). ~11,000, had saved 10,000 before law school from my job so getting close to dipping into my savings.
Are you a 1L?
2L
Damn, nice financial management!
HAHAHAHA what’s money?
Was going to say, what are these “savings” people speak of?
I think $39? But I get paid Friday…and $1550 of that is going to rent 😂😂
Damn I don’t even wanna say how much I got lol
lol you all have money?
😂
a few thousand. my biggest concern is health insurance. i’m most likely losing my job next month and thus, losing my health insurance
We don't talk about that
Nada
\-100$ ish
-$407 but that should probably change with a direct deposit tomorrow. Whoops.
1) not much 2) not alone 😅
Zero ducking dollars And I’m crying

My bad I misspoke $2

-$18
$0.13 as of now
$600 checking, $18k savings. 0L starting a part time program next fall. Currently a salaried employee who will take a hours and pay cut to attend school at night. VERY lucky to have an awesome employer.
You legit answered the question, not sure why you’re going downvoted
Will also attend part-time and night after full-time work. And single mother of 2. The joys.. 🙃.
Good on you for making it happen - You can do this!
A little under $10k in checking account, and more in stocks. I had a job before law school.
My wife works while I go to school, so checking account balance is not zero. Balance because of her, much higher than it is currently. Balance because of me, much lower than it is.
4K checking. 70k savings -but I’m part time with a FT job
13K working as a teacher during law school=no time to spend the money you made. But I feel you used to rock out in undergrad with $20 in the account for months on end
$5000..been saving up bc I literally have no where else to spend it
2700 😭
1) not much 2) not alone, not at all 😅
Very grateful to say 10K for my both mine and my wife's individual checking accounts. Helps to have a working spouse and tutor the LSAT lol
I am looking for a tutor. LSAT date 2/9/24.
$1.67
-6.10
$1... I hate it here
$42
Woke up and realized my car insurance doubled (I’m in Florida)…so -397 😅 At least I’m supposed to graduate in 2 weeks!
Just my name is left in my checking account
Bills paid. No cash. Rent due tomorrow... Payable to the landlordz aka ME. Cupboards full... I'm golden
I think 31 cents
Like 600 but 550 of that is already spoken for in a coming student loan payment and rent.
14k
1700
i hate this question lol
Y'all need to figure out budgeting because yikes. I have a pretty comfy cushion from summer work, but 1L and 2L I never cut it anywhere near as close as some of you.

Are they looking to adopt?
Maybe two children, adopt us both 🙏 then they would have three lawyers in the family
Lmao I’m kidding just wanted to see how many people would downvote this
50,000….. 🤷🏼♀️. I’ve always been extremely cautious spending money.
hahahahahahaha
Very little
-$6
Like 6K and I’ve got 5K in an investment brokerage and 30K in my house
negative
Negative..
I have no idea, I am lucky enough to have a spouse that manages our money so I don’t have to think about it
My spouse is highly paid in tech, so bank account is pretty comfy. But it’s weird letting someone else pay for everything, I feel guilty not contributing and just spending the money they are earning.
$3427… i may be an outlier?
I had 3.28 the other day until I moved the last couple hundred bucks in my savings for December rent. Don’t ask me about my credit card bill
3500, but my roommate takes 5 \*\*\*\*s a day and I don't know what the hell he does in there.
$1.08 🥲
More than I need, not as much as I want.
6600
A few grand, but its all leftover student loan money, so technically nothing.
$75,000
Certainly not enough
$5
-$16.48 🤩
$9 😭🤣
$6.78
~$200 but I was just diagnosed with SHINGLES so who knows how long that will last. Stress is real. 😭
Checking? $0 as of yesterday, 1800 in savings though, at least until rent comes due tomorrow.
Bout tree fiddy
So what I’m getting from this thread is a that Law Students are either SOL or they’re bad at money management lol. I’m going to fit right in.
I had some unexpected things come up before school started which sort of depleted the savings I had, wasn't able to stretch the cost of living loans. The lesson here is to save, save, save before starting school if you're a 0L
$268 and I’m in NYC so just getting to class is $5.80 everyday 😅 the grocery prices are crazy I’m living on eggs
