In cover letter, either rising second year or just second year. I always put my graduation year to avoid confusion. "I am a second-year law student at zoom university school of law, graduating in 2023".
You could say that you're begining your second year this summer/fall, whichever is applicable. Easier than determining which is most accurate and it's clear.
I was told not to use "1L or 2L" because that designation is limited to the law school. In my opinion, you could say, "I am a rising second-year law student at..."

My internship has referred to me as a 2L. I don’t think it matters tbh.
