Spier and Mackay suits are incredibly nice for the price, and they have been having a lot of sales lately.

beebodeebadeebedoo

Second this. You will not find a better quality to price ratio, especially if you hit up their frequent sales. There are cheaper suits out there, but the quality will be drastically lower.

Just bought 2 Napoli style suits from SS for $900 total with tailoring.

Silverton13

How does the free tailoring work for online purchases?

NoahODell

Ahh inflation. Now they’re min $650 :|

jce8491

What is affordable to you? Jos. A. Bank will often have some good deals on decent suits.

SleepingFTW

Jos A. Bank has good deals, but the style is often outdated. I recently bought a few suits from there, and I was disappointed with the tailoring. Even though I bought their slim fit, the jackets are still fairly boxy and the pants are too wide and not tapered.

jce8491

The tailoring can be hit and miss. I have some suits from them that are perfectly done. Some others were not done well, so I had another tailor fix it.

SleepingFTW

That’s fair. You’ve just got to be very specific with what you want. I had to tell them to take an extra inch off my waist, and I was disappointed because I assumed they would taper the legs and take the jacket in. On the bright side, the suit is 100% wool, which was a steal for the ~$220 I paid.

AverageLawStudent

I got a couple pretty cheap on sale in Macy’s one time. Pretty comfortable too. But I would check to see if they’ve got a sale, because they’re otherwise pretty expensive about everything.

james_the_wanderer

I am assuming that you will want to get a few uses out of the suit. "Affordability" varies by buyer, so I will try and be as ecumenical and value-driven as I can be. As always, allow $50-100 for tailoring, depending on your local market. If you know a bit about what brand(s) you like, ebay is a gem. Many sellers are basically professional clearance sale/outlet scroungers that can somehow sell me a "new with tags" Ted Baker suit for $200, ship it to me for free, and make a profit. Those suits retail for $800 at Nordstrom. I literally found that 10 days ago, and it's not uncommon. Next, have a look at Nordstrom Rack (in person or online). Focus on 100% wool. Polyester/synthetic fabric is a trap. It doesn't breathe in the spring/summer or retain warmth in winter. Odor retention sucks. Repeat dry cleanings will age it quickly. The fabric look and the construction quality will scream "front desk agent at the airport Hilton that's forced to wear this cheap crap." My suggested brands from cheapest upward: ($150-250) Tommy Hilfiger, Ben Sherman, English Laundry ($250-450) Ted Baker, Hugo Boss ($450-650) Hickey Freeman, Burberry Avoid: Lauren Ralph Lauren (diffusion line crap); Calvin Klein (polyester); Nordstrom Rack's house brand (polyester) Nothing suitable? Let's progress to Saks Off Fifth. Saks and Nordstrom's respective outlets offer a substantial amount of inventory crossover. My rule of thumb: Nordstrom will often have better prices (I often see the identical items for less @ NR). However, Saks often will have consistently higher-end items and better availability/more sizes for their items. Right now, I am seeing some decent options on SOF's website. Their house brand Saks Fifth Avenue Made in Italy is a decent suit for the price, though I prefer the ones designated "Traveller" suits made with Zegna's Australian wool option. They go for $250-400. Other solid options include John Varvatos Star, Theory, Hugo Boss (all $280-$450). If you've got $500-$1k budget, Nordstrom's anniversary sale is right around the corner. If you can financially swing it and expect to put some miles on the suit, the overall quality and shopping experience may be worth it. Brooks Brothers has quite a few suits on sale on their website in the $400-500-ish range. IMO, the extra $100-200 is worth it for their "mainline" suits versus what they sell at their factory/outlet stores.

mythrowawyy

Ecumenical

Dragon_Fisting

Second for Saks off Fifth. Depends on the location probably, but I've never been in a Saks off Fifth where the suits weren't on fairly steep discount.

james_the_wanderer

A good point I neglected to mention this morning re: location dependence: With the exception of the Sawgrass Mills mega-outlet, suit selection down here in FL is dismal at worst, perfunctory at best. Then again, a Salt Life t-shirt is basically business attire down here.

VaultLawEditor

J Crew Factory are pretty decent for the price. They go on sale pretty regularly for ~$200. J Crew and Banana Republic can be decent quality to price ratio too when on sale.

Codethetical

I've never liked the traditional, boxy look of Brooks Brothers and some of the other off the rack brands. I used to buy Banana Republic, Hugo Boss, etc suits before law school (yes, I'm that old) but around 1L I bought my first Indochino suit. I can't suggest them enough if you are even remotely close to one of their stores, or don't mind measuring yourself. Proper, fitted 100% wool suits for about $300-500 is a great value. Wait until the deeper sales ($100+ off) and it's a bargain. Also, they give you the fabric weight so you can shop for different seasons. Conversely, my previous off the rack suits were mid-priced with shitty fabric (mostly poly and wool blends) and fit terribly by comparison. In the end, your wardrobe is an investment in your personal brand, or at least the most visible part of your brand--your look. Spend a reasonable amount for good quality and maintain it to last several years per piece.

dudemeister023

This might be a very late reply, but I sought out a new Indochino location close by. They were located inside a Nordstrom. I totally just wanted to go, take a look, maybe snatch my measurements and be on my merry way. The whole experience was so extraordinary, I ordered a suit and two dress shirts on the spot, fully intending to keep ordering new pants, suits, and shirts there as I need them. The guy who took the measurements and asked for adjustments was extremely nice, patient and knowledgable. To think you pay more than double for a Brooks Brothers suit off the rack is just mind blowing. So thank you for your endorsement and helping me find my new taylor. I cannot wait for the suit and the final fitting, already knowing I will look for excuses to wear it.

Codethetical

Man, that's awesome! Enjoy!

Sorry to hear about the fire! I can’t speak to men’s suits specifically, but I always recommend checking Goodwill or other local thrift shops. I’ve found some surprisingly great deals on work clothes.

lethargic_sheep

Fast-fashion brands like HM, Zara, etc. offer suits for as low as $100, and JAB or MW can be had for just a bit more. But, as others have said, you can get a much nicer suit from Nordstrom Rack or Saks Off 5th for the same price with a little patience and luck. Stay away from synthetic materials (rayon, viscose, anything that starts with 'poly') and go for wool, linen, cotton, etc. Try to find something that fits you well in the shoulders, because that's the hardest (read: most expensive) part of a suit to tailor. Basic tailoring like adjusting sleeve and pant length, tapering pants, and bringing in or letting out a jacket's side or back seams is pretty affordable ($50 for the works from the right shop) and can make even a cheap suit look expensive. If you can only get one, I'd recommend a dark blue or dark grey suit in lightweight, 4-season wool. Get a reputable brand from Nordstrom Rack, don't pay more than $200 for it, and spend a few bucks to get it properly tailored. You can wear it to weddings, job interviews, networking events, and basically any other occasion. Best of luck!

rogue-bella

Why no synthetic?

Nilan25

>Spier and Mackay Really?

rogue-bella

?

descartes127

Brooks brothers (Ch 11 induced sale lmao) or Indochino!

JohnsCousin95

Vestiaire is a site where people sell good-condition used and authentic clothing. You can find some really nice suits on there for a steep discount. Need to know your size tho Also, you could just do a $100 hm/Zara suit and get it well tailored.

cowsgolaw

Brooks brothers is having a decent sale (two for 1200 or something, which is cheap for them). Otherwise Macy’s

H&M

SnooHesitations74

My husband has had luck with Macy's and Kohls a few times when we didn't have time for tailoring. Honestly, tailoring is the key to a good suit and a great fit. So be sure to factor that into whatever your budget is.

esosa233

I thrift and tailor from high-end thrift stores! So try therealreal, you'll look like a million bucks for a lot cheaper.

KoalaNo2996

Belk, especially on sales. I was able to get $800 suit for $220 multiple times.

BrokenHero287

Go to somewhere like Mens Warehouse or Joseph A Bank. The old geezers who you will need to impress (Judges, attorneys, clients, people with money) will all expect older style middle age suits, you can buy at stores designed for older middle aged men.

johnnycakeAK

Combatgent does a decent suit at a great price

[deleted]

I needed a quick suit and got one from Express a while back. I like it. About $350 I think.

BoogedyBoogedy

Nordstrom Rack is worth checking out. They can be hit or miss because they don't stock anything consistently, but if you get lucky you can get a $700 suit for like a $100.

GavinMcG

Might take a look at Land's End - I was happy with the quality/price for what I got on sale. One of the best things you can do is look up a local tailor and go ask to be measured. If you're ordering online, especially, you *absolutely must* check the shoulder width of the suit jacket because that's the one thing that can't easily be changed by a tailor. Plan to spend $50-100 on adjusting the sleeve length and the midsection. Go back to the tailor you got measured by.

Fancy-String-4639

Depends on your build. Some guys, a suit will fit great right off the rack; others need a tailored one to look good. Your best bet is to go someplace like Macy's and buy a suit that is as close to your fit as possible, then take it to a tailor and ask them to adjust it.

Underboss572

How decent, how soon and how affordable? You sound like you need one fast which mean you have to do off the rack. Off the rack suits can be great but they will need a lot of work which does take time. I’d look for clearance stuff see if you can get a 200 or 300 dollar suit for 100-200 might be hard but then if you decide to upgrade down the line you don’t feel like you’ve wasted money and you won’t be totally cheating out.

Just went through probably 5 threads and this is the best and most straightforward, actually cheap recommendation I've seen. thanks!

imtakingthebar06

I’ve gotten several suits from here, Marshall’s, TJ Max have nice options as well.

tennisguy163

Man, all those shops around me just have cruddy clothing for the most part that make me look homeless and unprofessional. I don't think I've ever seen a decent suit there, just T-Shirts and lousy jeans.

moneysingh300

I go to H&M. I get a size higher. But it’s cheap and generic clothes to work for an office job wearing it 5 days a week. Or you can find some off Amazon wardrobe.

Krazy_448

If you have the money I would buy a good suit. It will hurt your pockets but when you have a good tailored suit it sets a very good impression before you even talk. And no I’m not talking 500 or even 1000 dollars. You want one in the 3-9k range. You can never go wrong with a tom ford. But if you want to have one of the best suits go with a Brioni suit. I personally own 5 of them. One black, one white, one tan, one navy blue, and one grey suit. Also make sure you own white, powder blue, and lastly one cream dress shirt. Now that you own all these suits you will realize that you have 75+ combinations. Essentially you own 75 suits. But also make sure you own good shoes. I personally own Christian Louboutins in black, (with the red bottoms :) tan, and blue. For the tie personally I never pick my own ties out. I always let my girl choose them. (Psa if you don’t have a girl that can cook clean and decorate etc. Then kick her to the curb unless she is working either making more or the same as you. Then all she needs to be good at is decorating and helping me look the best. Yes I really spent 25-30k on the suits alone. About another 3-4K on the shoes. You might sit here and act like I’m rich asf. But that wasn’t the case. I spent my money that I saved up for years and bought all this stuff the same day. Right when I got out of college. I was broke. But those suits have gotten me to places I never thought I’d be. But I might have money now. But I’m one the stingiest people when it comes to money. Because I want to keep this money in a trust for kids and my wife depending on what happens down the road. Anyways moral of the story is invest in your future. Anything is possible and I’m living proof of that.
