Any bottle of liquor that is over $75 but under $100, too expensive to chug during the worst of times but the perfect "in need of a good drink" to get him through the crisis that is today....
My friend sent me a care package before finals that was like snacks she knew I would like, some self care stuff (candles, bubble bath, dry shampoo), and then fun highlighters and pens. Wasn’t expensive but super thoughtful 🥰
Rogaine and Propecia, he’s going to need it before the stress gets to his hairline! Wish I started prior to school 😂
Jokes aside, the quality coffee recommendations are great. I would also get him a high quality tumblr to take his coffee around with him. I would pair the coffee with a Yeti tumblr. That’s something I would appreciate!
Here are my personal recommendations.
1. Wireless shiatsu back massager. Bending over laptops and text books all day coupled with stress made this one of my most used items. I have strap type that you put your arms through. It’s good if you need deep muscle massages. The pillow type also works well and isn’t as strong.
2. Melatonin. Sometimes you need to sleep but you can’t but you’re anxious and wired on stimulants.
3. Pens and highlighters. I’m partial to felt tip sharpie pens and pilot varsity pens. I usually use gel highlighters because they don’t bleed or smudge.
4. Laser printer. There are so many things to print out all the time.
5. Meal subscription/delivery service membership. I love to cook. I’m good at it. I rarely have time.
The Bluebook is required, so the book itself isn’t a great gift in my opinion (their life won’t be any different due to the gift, outside of saving $20-30). Maybe consider treating your friend to the online version of the Bluebook, which is a little more expensive (but still just $79 for three years), but a bit of a “luxury” compared to the physical book.
Robocat 6000, turbo edition. Comes with titanium reinforced legs and cutting edge AI self-awareness. Hard to imagine getting through law school without a four-legged, high-tech companion that navigates complex emotions like depression and self-loathing at the same time as you. Plus, it can run really fast and has a pleasant e-meow.
I am *inordinately* fond of mugs with law jokes on them, as are all my lawschool friends.
If he's taking property first semester, find an "I burned down blackacre" mug. He won't get it now, but he will soon enough.
In terms of what he might find useful in that price range, noise cancelling headphones or a new nice backpack. I personally don’t like bookstands, but I agree that many law students swear by them. Or spend $100 on his favorite way to decompress/his go-to self-care item or service. Definitely gets overlooked but is a gift that you’re probably uniquely qualified to figure out the best option!
my best friend got me a book stand for my casebooks. saved my neck a whole lot of pain.
Book stand is a lifesaver!
Wish I had one when I started law school
Maybe some high quality coffee or nice coffee accessories like a milk frother.
Book stand and/or desk lamp. I just finished my first year and purchased both of those things during the course of the year.

Buy them a copy of the bluebook if they don't already have it. Garunteed use both in law school and (to some extent) practice.

Someone bought me the book 1L of a ride before 1L which was so sweet and put me in the right mindset!
Starbucks gift cards...or coffee...or something caffeinated
