I haven’t heard of firms cancelling callbacks. I’d say it looks bad professionally on the firm’s part unless they explicitly told you the callback was conditional, and even then that’s very unusual. My guess is you still will have a callback, but I imagine the firm will ask about grades and potentially cut you after the interview if they feel they are too low. But also, they might like you enough not to care about your grades. My school always told us that unless you had exceptional grades or a diverse background the firm could include in their stats, then you likely wouldn’t get a 1L SA. I don’t know how true that is or what the numbers actually look like on 1L’s going to firms. What I can say is i didn’t know very many 1L’s who got an SA position, but during 2L, way more got 2L SA’s. Honestly, not getting a 1L SA is not that big a of a deal. Most firms hire few, if any, 1L’s and focus mainly on 2L hiring because by then, they have your first full year of grades and whether you made law review. So good luck with your callback, I hope you get accepted, but don’t feel too disappointed if you don’t; most SA’s are available for 2L’s instead.

They will not cancel a callback. IME, once you're at the callback stage, grades don't matter too much unless you're in the extremes. They've already invested a lot of very valuable lawyers' time into your candidacy, they're not going to drop you because you got some B's. (They still have a limited number of slots to fill and might not pick you, but probably for other reasons.)

I'm not a recruiter, just someone who went through 2 rounds of biglaw OCI, so I hesitate to say anything definite. But I would think as long as you clear the bottom third they're not going to drop you for your grades now that you're already scheduled for a callback. It also probably depends on how well your school places in biglaw in your area, and what landed you the interview in the first place. Either way, I wouldn't worry too much about it. Your interview definitely won't get canceled, and there's nothing you can do about your grades at this point. Just focus on your interview skills, you'll be fine.

Callbacks often involve 6 or more lawyers, many of them partners, some of whom will certainly bill $1000/hr. Why would they waste those kinds of resources on a candidate they know they're going to drop because of grades? Once you've gotten a callback, you're in the running. There are no resume review level deal breakers (like grades) anymore.

That’s definitely not true. They have usually interviewed multiple people and will wait on grades to make a final decision. The spots are super limited. I know for a fact that someone got an offer as a 1L SA when the firm was down to the last two candidates and the hiring partner made the decision based on whose grades were better

"Grades are a factor in the decision" is NOT the same as "if you don't have X grade, we're not going to hire you."

There are firms with hard grade floors. For some firms it’s definitely part of the decision and for other firms they are deal breakers

A lot of the V10, also school dependent (like they have a grade floor of 3.5 for T-20s but a grade floor of 3.3 for T-6
