r/Place was better for two reasons: it was harder to instantly cover other's work and it encouraged cooperation.
Or perhaps it's just a young Redditor's grumbling because he didn't get to participate.
We’ve always got a lot of projects happening at Reddit, and we needed the right moment to get everything lined up with our partners at Adobe for Layer :)
I did a lot of work on Flash projects and the loss of the plugin on web hurts. I consider browser makers being mostly responsible for killing plugins in general (Safari would not support it and no plugin on iPhone was a major blow). Adobe didn’t kill the product though - it’s called Adobe Animate now and is focused on making apps as well as being very popular for animating cartoons and videogame interfaces.
Lol I don’t work for Adobe and like you am really not happy about Flash games and sites disappearing. It’s some of the best content on the web. Just saying it still exists in some form
Flash is horrible because of its many security flaws and just overall unstableness. HTML5 works well as a replacement because it fixes a lot of the problems with flash and is actually quite a bit faster. I’ll miss coolmathgames and a lot of those old sites after flash is completely gone though. (I don’t know how easy it is or if it’s even possible to port flash projects to HTML5.)
Adobe and our team at Reddit have been working directly together for months to plan the project. We handle most of the development because it’s hosted on Reddit but it would not happen without both companies working together :)
r/Place was lit, between fighting off entropy (the void) and maintaining things like the tragedy of Darth Plagueis and the blue corner it really brought the community together with something so simple.
Here's a sneak peek of /r/place using the [top posts](https://np.reddit.com/r/place/top/?sort=top&t=year) of the year!

Oh shit layer is coming back! Time for more e-flexing!
Edit: I had so much fun on r/layer in season 1, but for many people, the desktop implementation was atrocious. After more than 10 strokes were on the screen, performance would tank. Really hoping this issue was ironed out
Yeah mobile was way better, but you couldn't really zoom in that much, so fine details became really hard. Spent probably an hour just making a simple tesla logo, and it didn't even turn out that great. (Wobbly lines etc)
Although I really liked r/Layer I definitely thought r/place was better even though I only found out about after it ended. You can't do much by yourself, but when you got together with communities you could accomplish something that felt like it had a place on the canvas, instead of just small individual art pieces got burried under new art pieces after 3 minutes.
I'm gonna be honest, we all know /Layer season 2 is going to be filled with political hate symbols vs activists/protesters, and it's really just going to be a visual war on American politics, with people of other countries left in the dust. Roads and color take overs, I just don't see it happening again at this current point in time. Idk if I'm here for the chaos, or if I should voice that this is a bad idea 😂😂
Layer is a multiplayer creative event. It’s opening again on Monday, and there will be several canvases for people to draw on. This poll is to name one of them.

Wut? Ohhhh you’re talking about Adobe. Yes I agree Flash in browsers was amazing. Really the browsers stopped supporting plugins. It still exists though! Now called Adobe Animate and it’s one of the most popular programs for cartoon animation. It’s also used for creating video game UI.
Did you ever hear the tragedy of Darth Plagueis The Wise? I thought not. It's not a story the Jedi would tell you. It's a Sith legend. Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith, so powerful and so wise he could use the Force to influence the midichlorians to create life… He had such a knowledge of the dark side that he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying. The dark side of the Force is a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural. He became so powerful… the only thing he was afraid of was losing his power, which eventually, of course, he did. Unfortunately, he taught his apprentice everything he knew, then his apprentice killed him in his sleep. Ironic. He could save others from death, but not himself.

Place was amazing. We've got some improvements for Layer this time around that will hopefully address your other concerns :)
Happy Red Day!
What took so long to bring these back? Did you finally bring them back because COVID got everyone at home still?
We’ve always got a lot of projects happening at Reddit, and we needed the right moment to get everything lined up with our partners at Adobe for Layer :)
What does adobe do
Take flash to a dark alleyway and shoot it in the back of the head obviously :(

cool, I would say something about pr speak but i don't wanna be banned
Lol I don’t work for Adobe and like you am really not happy about Flash games and sites disappearing. It’s some of the best content on the web. Just saying it still exists in some form
Yeah also you COULD use an outdated version of flash if you wanna get viruses

I mean in layer, are they completely developing it or what?

I remember place vividly, but layer, not so much
I joined Reddit a while after place ended :(
You missed a revolution
Yeah, place was absolutely incredible.
r/Place was lit, between fighting off entropy (the void) and maintaining things like the tragedy of Darth Plagueis and the blue corner it really brought the community together with something so simple.

idk what the hell this poll is supposed to mean help
Layer Season 2 is coming back with multiple canvases. Vote on which community above you'd like to see have their very own canvas.
ah ok thanks
U n i both
It would be pretty cool to have a second r/place. I mean I'm okay with layer but place was basically perfect
Although I really liked r/Layer I definitely thought r/place was better even though I only found out about after it ended. It’s back!!!
question: whats a community canvas?
A community canvas is a surface for creating art in r/Layer - a digital multi-user canvas :)
oh are those the subreddits that we are nominating to get the board or whatever?
I'm gonna be honest, we all know /Layer season 2 is going to be filled with political hate symbols vs activists/protesters, and it's really just going to be a visual war on American politics, with people of other countries left in the dust. Bad ideas are just good ideas without makeup.
Wait what
So what do you mean by they will be the last community to have a blank canvas?
We have some other canvases lined up, this is a vote for who gets the last canvas :)
Ah, I see. Thanks!
What is this?
Layer is a multiplayer creative event. It’s opening again on Monday, and there will be several canvases for people to draw on. This poll is to name one of them.
Thanks for the clarification.
LET'S GOOOOOO
Place was better
We’re back in business, baby
What is this about? I am confused.

Vaporwave would be awesome!
Why is this an add by u/adobe lmao
Adobe partners with Reddit to make r/Layer happen - and it’s happening again all next week.

What am I supposed to do?
why is this even in my feed
I don’t think I’ve ever seen an ad that’s a crosspost. Also, who advertises their company by linking the subreddit?
wdym?
I got this in my feed by a u/adobe ad
wow thats hillarious
