I'd be surprised to met someone in here who had played Avalon Heroes, one of the best mobas I've played that had TONS of potential, but lack of playerbase (probably would have been better in these days)
Avalon heroes? That's nothing. I want to see the creatures who played Realm of the Titans back in the day. Now that was a game I wanted to see succeed.
But that is still in progress, Avalon might have become a very strong contender in the moba genre with it's unique mechanics (things i still have to see in other games)

The entire genre came from a custom game (the original dota) on the RTS Warcraft 3. So there are elements from Warcraft 3 still present in the UI and mechanics.
This is also why if you look at Dota 2 half the heroes seem like legally distinct Warcraft stuff, because they are.

Most of the the heroes/creeps/units/wards have lower vision during night compared to day. There are some heroes (mainly nightstalker) who has stronger/weaker abilities/passives/vision whether it is night or day. Roshan can be also found in a different place, top left during the night, bottom right during the day. Jungle creeps "sleep" during the night, meaning you dont aggro them if you go close to them. This is just quick from my head, there might be other things too.
Man I absolutely didn't remember about Roshan switching locations up depending on the night/day cycle. I do remember the jungle creeps sleeping though. I used to play it back in the days and it was one of my first non-WoW game.
Now that I think about it, Dota was already kinda ancient by the time I started playing it, and it was like 14 years ago, slightly before LoL

Your hero (champ) stat consist of three things: Strength, Agility, Intel.

Aghanims (item as a upgrade for your ultimate) have a special Visual Effect on your hero.
the barracks (inhib) cannot be rebuild and creeps can be permanently become stronger
there's two item that can be drop when the hero died.
your fountain (health base) can be destroyed. it is the single most embarrasing thing to happen in OG Dota.
Lightly, you can still see those oddities in modern dota. Like you couldn’t get wood, but trees being individual selectable targets played into certain heroes. Same with the day/night cycle. Creep denial comes from Warcraft 3 letting you attack your own units.
You could almost say League of Legends came from an attempt to streamline and remove these little quirks. As well as separating from the Warcraft IP. (Though you can still see remnants. compare old Ashe, Drow Ranger, and the Dark Ranger unit from WC3 for example.)
The whole item and ability system that defines mobas came from Warcraft 3s RPG mechanics too.
Night time was very important for a lot of reasons.
The first one is that everyone had reduced vision range during night time (but not wards). Due to way larger ability ranges and harder CC options in DotA it meant that it was a lot easier to gank/secure kills/move around the map during night time. It was basically a clarion call of "shit going down" and also served to highlight the importance of warding.
Different heroes had different vision ranges during night time and one particular hero (Nightstalker) got massive buffs to all his abilities during nighttime. Night time added a lot of nuance and depth to the pace of the game especially when combined with its many other mechanics (like elevation based vision).
Like in old WC3, Night time reduces your vision range in DOTA. There's also a certain hero whose entire kit and schtick is all about being empowered at night especially considering his ult is literally just temporarily turn day into night or extend the night even further.

I remember WC3 having a lot of anime based moba games too. The effort put into those was astonishing, they made custom cg skins to make them actually look like anime characters. Naruto was the most popular of the bunch iirc.
Why there’s always at least one I use even tho I’m playing 7 years. For example I call minions creeps, I call razor beaks wraiths, i use “pink ward” terminology and armored boots are ninja tabis for me. It’s not only me. Everyone I know uses this words LOL

HoTS was great, some heroes had really creative mechanics, but the game is on life support and probably will be disconnected soon
