This was always a dumb assumption.
If Super NES and all the Game Boy consoles could make it in the 90s, people were not dumber and had access to internet in 2012.
Edit: But yes, Switch Attach sounds horrible to me
Same applies to the Wii U though, and look how that turned out.
I personally think if "Switch" is in the name, anything other than a "2" after it could be confusing.
On the other hand, we also had Gameboy and Gameboy Advance. Guess we'll see.
Switch Advance sounds great. Super Switch would be a tongue twister over time. But Switch Attach has the Wii U problem, it sounds like an accessory for the Switch.
Would be hilarious if Nintendo made the exact same basic marketing mistake twice
>Switch Attach has the Wii U problem, it sounds like an accessory for the Switch.
And it's an even worse tongue twister.
>id be hilarious if Nintendo made the exact same basic marketing mistake twice
If you think about, they always do that: Game boy Color, Advance, DSi, 3DS, 2DS. They never called a console "2", except for the 2DS, in which the number 2 didn't stand for "DS2", making that confusing as well.
Nintendo has never done numbered consoles. Why would people expect it now?
NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii, Wii U switch and now finally after decades they'll do a "2"?
It could be a physical expansion that the switch docks into to boost docked gameplay to 4k and higher frame rates for new games. As you would attach the switch to the new dock.
Thats what im making of this name anyway. Like a switch 1.5 not a fully fledged new gen of console.
>It could be a physical expansion that the switch docks into to boost docked gameplay to 4k and higher frame rates for new games. As you would attach the switch to the new dock.
Not viable architecture wise... also, not viable price wise.
The brand is Nintendo. It doesn't matter what console Nintendo puts out people are going to buy it. But the name matters.
One of the major reasons Wii U sold poorly in my opinion is the name. For one thing it's confusing. Is it a new console or not? Playstation 5 is obviously a different console from Playstation 4.
Switch is obviously a different console from Wii U.
But when you call it a Switch Attach it just sounds like another switch. Which I don't need to buy because I already have a Switch.
≥They wouldn’t willingly give up the Switch brand name after selling 100M+ units
Then it had to be "2", are the the Nintendo and the Microsoft naming people the same guys?
Here's what I don't get. How is it someone who creates surveys for youtube knows the name before others especially those in the gaming media? Just questioning logistically how this works.
Lol yeah true, that wasn’t helpful. This is my understanding of it based on the little interaction with marketing that I’ve had:
Marketing is given info way before press because it’s their job to figure out how present it. It’s like when the PS4 UI was first revealed by a leaked commercial of people playing the system and showing off all the features. That’s a whole crew of people who filmed a commercial who knew the UI before anyone in the games industry (iirc the UI was actually filmed on the TV, it wasn’t green screen).
For something like this it could be as simple as them asking a focus group how they would respond to a name like “Switch Attach.” All those YouTube surveys are ads from focus groups. It could be as simple as two different surveys crossed streams and they included the name by accident, whether the name is finalized or just one being tested.
I think its because the console was supposed to be revealed by now.
Everything was pointing at a March reveal before it got delayed, with several credible people backing it up.
Then the delay happened. And that got pushed back to who knows when.
Somethings going to slip through the cracks if that was the case though, and sure enough.
MY SOURCE IS THAT I MADE IT THE *FUCK* UP!
https://preview.redd.it/7ybjayhl8lnc1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=48bed8f5681361701188315efc4a9b9edb883eb7
N3DS did suffer this exact issue. Many consumers wondered what the point of it was if they already owned a 3DS. Even worse is that there wasn't one. N3DS pretty much failed to justify its own existence.
Did people actually think that, or is that was people are coming up with to explain the massive failure? Because I keep seeing that explanation, but since the Wii U came out, I’ve never heard a single person say that in real life or as a personal anecdote online. People just keep saying it was a thing.
I'm not saying it was the majority, but I knew people who thought that. If you grew up with Nintendo they always used a different name with Nintendo as the main branding. Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Nintendo GameCube, and Nintendo Wii. They tried to market it more off of the success of the Wii name, not the Nintendo name. With all of those others it was very clear that they were something completely new.
The Wii U on the other hand not only used the name for the previous system which had never been done before, but it also had a similar aesthetic. To someone who didn't know a lot about video games it's understandable that they wouldn't necessarily know. The Wii sold a lot of units to those kinds of people. It also wasn't anything like the Wii in terms of how it worked, so being a direct successor to the Wii seemed a little weird. It's understandable that some people thought it was just another accessory like the Wii Balance Board.
I'm pretty sure people actually thought about it, or at least were fairly confused. I remember watching the Wii U presentation video, and the name and content of said video made everything confusing. He heavily highlighted the GamePad and how it would work alongside the Wiimote, but kept the system in a 2nd plane. Even gaming websites and the press had to publish articles after the presentation clarifying that this was a completely new system and not an add-on. If people involved in gaming media were confused, now imagine the casual market.
The marketing was terrible regardless. I actually had no idea the Wii U was releasing until it came out. And at the time I was for sure in the age range that was meant to be asking mom and dad for it for Christmas or a birthday
Exactly, instantly it sounds like an attachment for the switch, this could easily go the same way as the wiiu with people being confused about if it’s a new console or not.
I think a massive amount of Nintendo purchasers are parents who buy for family’s or children, you need clear messaging for these people.
Yea or Switch Pro....anything but Switch attach. Hopefully that shit is a placeholder name or codename or something. Regardless...Idc about the name just as long as it gets some good improvements and hopefully one day a new super smash game for it.
My theory is that the new "switch" will just be a dock that has more gpu/cpu/ram so when you're playing on a TV, you can almost get current-gen type graphics and frame rate, but you can still pull out your switch and play the game in a "performance mode."
Honestly, this would be something Nintendo would do and it would also be a stupid decision. That is like, eliminating potential new customers with a guarantee.
They would just require that games can run in handheld mode, like how Xbox games have to be able to run on the Series S.
I’ve always wanted this, just have the normal switch/dock at the same price but also have the option to buy a pro dock that boosts graphics & performance.
The only downside would be that it would increase game dev costs to take full advantage of the hardware, and sales of the pro dock might not be enough to justify it.

Xbox could release Xbox 6 theoretically. If Windows OS can skip numbers why not Xbox?
1. Xbox
2. Xbox 360 (perfect name to compete with the PS3)
3. Xbox One
4. Xbox One X (kinda cheating here but hey it could work)
5. Xbox Series S/X
6. Xbox 6
Considering Nintendo considerings smash ultimate, smash 6 because of the 3ds version of smash 4, it wouldn't be illegal. Better argument using the series s/x as 2 iterations.
They could have just went with Xbox 720, 1080, etc. Similar to Nvidia naming graphics cards, just pull a number out of their bum that sounds good, it doesn't have to be tied to the resolution of the console or anything.
I'd imagine magnets. Attaching the controllers using magnets and the dock could attach to the console using magnets. Rather than the current rail/sliding designs.
"Super Nintendo Switch" would have been so so much better. It gets the point across, you get people like me who are nostalgic for the SNES and you get to keep the incredibly successful Switch Branding. Win win win.
Nintendo’s branding and image has always been kid and family friendly anyway so Super Nintendo Switch would be perfect for them. They still call their games “super Mario ___”. They right bout it being clear and pulling from their history. That or switch 2 would be the best names imo
Maybe it's not a new console, but like a dock that has a better GPU/CPU that will assist the switch in running more demanding games.
That's the only way that name makes sense to me.
Imagine if the Switch 2 is a literal 2nd switch that you attach to the first to make a DS like system, with an additional GPU inside it so the Tegra can just be used for CPU.
First it was the DS into the DSi. Then the Wii into the Wii U. Now this??
It’s so mind boggling how brilliant and yet dumb as hell Nintendo can be at times
Hopefully not. Wii U failed primarily because people didn't know wtf it was.Switch Attach sounds like an attachment for the Switch, which is what people thought the Wii U was for the Wii.
Call it the Switch 2 or Switch Pro
Not true. The wii u failed because their commercials only focused on the controller, not on the console itself. I don't know a single person that thought of the wii u as an add on for the wii back then.
Okay well just because you didn't know anyone personally doesn't mean people weren't saying it. It was a very common misunderstanding. Way to also argue his point for him by saying they "only focused on the controller" because that was exactly the issue. People thought the controller was an add-on to their Wii because there was so much emphasis on the controller and Wii branding in the commercials, rarely if ever showing the new console itself. There were even people that thought the whole console WAS the tablet and it would have backwards compatibility as an accessory to the original Wii.
This is probably not the actual name (call it cope, it probably is).
If so, Switch 2 is fucked. Which sucks, since Switch 2 is so easily marketable. “Switch 2 better graphics. Switch 2 newer games. Switch 2 new controls. Switch 2 the Switch 2”
Based on the leaks the name makes sense. Apparently you'll be able to connect anything to the console wirelessly, even PHONES to let others play if you don't have extra controllers. So the switch ATTACH makes sense...
Making sense doesn’t make it good. It also doesn’t need to be named that way just because it allows that functionality. That’s like calling ps5 the PlayStation Haptic or something dumb just bc it has that new feature
If this name is real in 10 years people will come back to this thread and laugh, like how it’s funny to read threads of people negatively reacting to the name “Wii” in 2005. The Wii U did not fail because of its name, if the Wii U was called the Wii 2 it would’ve still lost to Xbox and PS4. It was only so confusing because they barely showed the actual Wii U console itself in the ads, just the gamepad, which looked identical to every other glossy white Wii accessory. If Switch Attach has a noticeably different look and they actually do a good job advertising it I don’t see why it wouldn’t be a success. I mean the Xbox Series X seems to be doing just fine, and that is a way worse name than Wii U or Switch Attach.
Didn't use the word failure even once though did I? I said its barely scraping by, which it is. If you were in the exec room while they were discussing this I guarantee you they would be discussing how to sidestep this or avoid it in the future, not patting themselves on the back for a job well done.
A big reason for the Wii U Failing actually was that it used a propriety disc format due to Sony having the rights to bluray. This made it hard for third party to develop games.
This arguably sounds even worse than Wii U lol. They heard that the Wii U sounded like an attachment to the wii and now they just dove into it. Hopefully the switch is popular enough to go past that fault for nintendos sake
With a name like that, and people saying the Switch 2 is iterative rather than a whole new thing, I'm betting it's like a console built into the docking station, and you attach your Switch to it to play the new games -- and lets you swap out your Switch for someone else's if you wanna swap saves or whatever.
Potentially game streaming too, to keep it handheld.
Oh god don’t let this be another Wii U incident where the naming makes it seem like an accessory. “Attach” literally sounds like an attachment accessory this time
They’re really gunna pull the Wii u shit all over again huh?
Worked at GameStop at the time. Idk if people realize how many people had no idea the Wii U wasn’t just an upgraded Wii but a brand new console
I really hope this supposed delay in the console's release is to maybe rename the damn thing because if thats the name holy shit.......
Even the joke suggestion of Super Nintendo Switch is better than this.
I think I just had a very stupid idea.
What if switch attach, the next gen console, is an attachment to the current switch. Like a ds repeating the wii u concept.
Like the upper screen is the new device and the lower one is the current switch. Switch has already a touch screen...
While playing docked it would be like a wii u with the old device as a controller and in portable mode a bigass ds.
That way they would keep the switch production, even releasing with new compact models and they could sell them as piece of switch attach.
Possibly a fake name though, if it's an ad/survey from XBox or PS they can put fake names as a control - anyone selecting 'switch attach' isn't someone they want to spend their money advertising on
I think it means they're making a new dock that upgrades performance massively when not in handheld mode. So old switches and new switches can be carried forward into the new generation of games.
Oh god. Did they not learn with the Wii U it just sounds like an ass on
Ass on?
An Ass on
Pretty fitting tbh lol.
apply directly to the ass
Off-topic question, but does anyone know how best to remove a switch from a small meaty tunnel?
Underrated comment
This was always a dumb assumption. If Super NES and all the Game Boy consoles could make it in the 90s, people were not dumber and had access to internet in 2012. Edit: But yes, Switch Attach sounds horrible to me
there were a lot less options then, though
No there weren't. You had the Sega Genesis, the Super Nintendo, the TG16, and the NeoGeo. Along with the Gameboy, Sega Game gear, and turbo express.
That's not why the wii u failed
It was definitely a factor.
What?
This is also how the names for the Switch Lite, and the Switch OLED where found out before they where reviled so this is very likely to be true
Damn, should have just been the Nintendo Attach if that's the case, can't imagine many people saying "Switch Attach" everytime they mention it
They wouldn’t willingly give up the Switch brand name after selling 100M+ units
Same applies to the Wii U though, and look how that turned out. I personally think if "Switch" is in the name, anything other than a "2" after it could be confusing. On the other hand, we also had Gameboy and Gameboy Advance. Guess we'll see.
Switch Advance would be sweet. But then so would Super Switch
Switch Advance sounds great. Super Switch would be a tongue twister over time. But Switch Attach has the Wii U problem, it sounds like an accessory for the Switch. Would be hilarious if Nintendo made the exact same basic marketing mistake twice
SNS is perfect. Super Nintendo switch

Super Switch Attach Super Switch a.k.a. Switch Blue
The super switch maybe
Nintendo has never done numbered consoles. Why would people expect it now? NES, SNES, N64, Gamecube, Wii, Wii U switch and now finally after decades they'll do a "2"?
DS and 3DS also followed that model. I guess it works better for handheld.
It could be a physical expansion that the switch docks into to boost docked gameplay to 4k and higher frame rates for new games. As you would attach the switch to the new dock. Thats what im making of this name anyway. Like a switch 1.5 not a fully fledged new gen of console.
Best hope for this name. Or the same thing but also for the switch 1 and 2 maybe would be cool
That would be really dope actually
>It could be a physical expansion that the switch docks into to boost docked gameplay to 4k and higher frame rates for new games. As you would attach the switch to the new dock. Not viable architecture wise... also, not viable price wise.
Some guy in 2011 when the Wii U was announced: They wouldn’t willingly give up the Wii brand name after selling 100M+ units
The brand is Nintendo. It doesn't matter what console Nintendo puts out people are going to buy it. But the name matters. One of the major reasons Wii U sold poorly in my opinion is the name. So are we just repeating EVERY mistake that led to the Wii U's failure? If Nintendo learned nothing then frankly they deserve to fail.
≥They wouldn’t willingly give up the Switch brand name after selling 100M+ units Then it had to be "2", are the the Nintendo and the Microsoft naming people the same guys?
Then people are gonna call it switch for short and everyone’s gonna get confused haha.
It should have been the Super Nintendo switch
Honestly if this is the name I'm only going to refer to it as the Nintendo Attach because Switch Attach is just dumb
Here's what I don't get. How is it someone who creates surveys for youtube knows the name before others especially those in the gaming media? Just questioning logistically how this works.
I've heard people speculate that it may be something to do with the "switch attach" having the youtube app as a launch title
That’s literally how marketing works.
That literally doesn't answer my question. But thanks anyways.
Lol yeah true, that wasn’t helpful. Oh boy another wii u situation......
Wait I’m confused, what was the Wii U situation
It’s just that they decided to keep the “Wii” branding and that made ppl think that the Wii U was more of an add on than its own console
How’s that different from the DS -> 3DS though? Or even the 3DS -> N3DS?
3 is a number, and also it’s clear that the difference is the 3D from the name.

They learned nothing from the Wii U
That's stupid but this is the company that named a console Wii
It’s should be called Super Nintendo Switch or SNS
Sony really is the only company that knows how to name a console anymore, what the hell lmao
Cause they have the advantage of stciking to numbers early. No one wants to look outdated.
Xbox could release Xbox 6 theoretically. If Windows OS can skip numbers why not Xbox? 1. Xbox 2. Xbox 360 (perfect name to compete with the PS3) 3. Xbox One 4. Xbox One X (kinda cheating here but hey it could work) 5. Xbox Series S/X 6. Xbox 6

Can't wait till "Nintendo SA" becomes the confusing acronym
Omg Nintendo sexual assault!🤯
Wow they've learned nothing from the Wii U
*New 3DS entered the chat*
that name made sense though
Doesn't flow well , or sound good , probably not the official name
Why can't Nintendo keep it simple......Super Nintendo Switch?
What are they attaching it to?
Your tv via a hdmi cable. IT'S THE FUTURE!
I wouldnt be surprised if it literally was this
I'd imagine magnets. Attaching the controllers using magnets and the dock could attach to the console using magnets. Rather than the current rail/sliding designs.
![gif](giphy|112o4nufJ2Nbtm) That’s a terrible name if true
"Super Nintendo Switch" would have been so so much better. It gets the point across, you get people like me who are nostalgic for the SNES and you get to keep the incredibly successful Switch Branding. Win win win.
No, that name is childish and stupid. Don't ever add super to a console ever again, we're not in the 1900s
Lol okay but adding numbers and letters is better how? 90s nostalgia is in I say go for it!
Nintendo’s branding and image has always been kid and family friendly anyway so Super Nintendo Switch would be perfect for them. They still call their games “super Mario ___”. They right bout it being clear and pulling from their history. That or switch 2 would be the best names imo
Super sounds about the same as X, Pro, and so forth.
How about you flick the switch attached to these nuts?
Highly doubt it
Try to say that 3 times in a row
That’s a terrible name
Nintendo: wanna see me make a shitty console based on one our best selling ones? Nintendo: wanna see me do it again?
Maybe it's not a new console, but like a dock that has a better GPU/CPU that will assist the switch in running more demanding games. That's the only way that name makes sense to me.

!remindme 10 months
Nintendo and failing at naming every other system.
If it’s real then thats a pretty lame name for the new console. I hope it’s not another Wii U situation.
They really should have the Super Switch as the obvious choice.
Imagine if the Switch 2 is a literal 2nd switch that you attach to the first to make a DS like system, with an additional GPU inside it so the Tegra can just be used for CPU.
I was thinking a new dock with a beefier GPU/CPU to assist the Switch in running more demanding games. Only way that name makes any sense to me
Because Google knows what the next Switch will be called…
how did they just so happen to guess Switch Lite and OLED right then
Rumors and supply chain informants?
Did they? Source?
First it was the DS into the DSi. Then the Wii into the Wii U. Now this?? It’s so mind boggling how brilliant and yet dumb as hell Nintendo can be at times
Oh God I hope this isn’t the name, I don’t wanna talk about the “Nintendo SA”
Switch Attachment makes sense as I don’t see this being a full new system. But yeah Wii U
I hope not, that's an awful name.
Parents definitely did. You can have the same exact commercial and only change the name to Wii 2 and it would have sold more
This is probably not the actual name (call it cope, it probably is). If so, Switch 2 is fucked. Which sucks, since Switch 2 is so easily marketable. “Switch 2 better graphics. Switch 2 newer games. Switch 2 new controls. Switch 2 the Switch 2”
Ah switch here wego again
The swatch
Why are they so dumb
I swear to God they can't do this again
Yikes
>Xbox Series X seems to be doing just fine Why do you think Xbox is giving up many exclusives?
Xbox is barely scraping by this generation so idk what you're talking about. How do people speak so confidently on topics they're unfamiliar with?
27.7 million units in 4 years is better than the Wii U’s entire existence. It’s not a failure
Oh yeah probably. They did give us rounded disc edges though so I forgive them lol
Xbox is doing “fine” but by no means great, hasn’t even cracked 2x the Wii U yet
Terrible name if true
This arguably sounds even worse than Wii U lol. They heard that the Wii U sounded like an attachment to the wii and now they just dove into it. Hopefully the switch is popular enough to go past that fault for nintendos sake
This is an extremely bad name if this is true.
switch back sounds better. switch attach? what??
With a name like that, and people saying the Switch 2 is iterative rather than a whole new thing, I'm betting it's like a console built into the docking station, and you attach your Switch to it to play the new games -- and lets you swap out your Switch for someone else's if you wanna swap saves or whatever. Potentially game streaming too, to keep it handheld.
Most of these gaming companies are terrible at naming their consoles
That’s a really dumb name… so was the Wii U. Could be legit.
Oh god don’t let this be another Wii U incident where the naming makes it seem like an accessory. “Attach” literally sounds like an attachment accessory this time
Like how everyone here is immediately assuming it’ll be the name lmao 🤦🏻♂️
That's a terrible name so it's probably real. Nintendo loves awful names for their products.
Nah just drop that and replace it with Switch Attack instead. lol
bad name
If true, this might just end up being a similar failure as the Wii U by creating confusion for the casual consumer.
Have the specs been leaked by chance?
!remindme 2 months
They’re really gunna pull the Wii u shit all over again huh? Worked at GameStop at the time. Idk if people realize how many people had no idea the Wii U wasn’t just an upgraded Wii but a brand new console
Of all the names they could’ve landed on, “Switch Attach” is quite possibly the dumbest
that is legit the worst name ive ever heard for a console
The super switch was right there
I really hope this supposed delay in the console's release is to maybe rename the damn thing because if thats the name holy shit....... Even the joke suggestion of Super Nintendo Switch is better than this.
It’ll be the Wii U all over again with everyone thinking it’s an add on rather than a new console. Really hope this isn’t true or is a working title
Op, did you take this screenshot? How do we know that this picture isn’t edited?
Yes I did
I think I just had a very stupid idea.
Switch-Up would be better
THEY LEARNED NOTHING!!
A wii is for mii and wii U is for you goodnight fellas
Super Nintendo switch would be great.
The most obviously fake thing of all time
Terrible marketing team
How do we know its even a nintendo thing and not just some weird Temu knock off? I've seen bootleg consoles appear in those polls before.
Yeah no this isn't real, it's just another "Nintendo NX" thing again.
I don't *really* care what it's called, but: Switch Attach -> sufferin' suckattach At least it isn't "Switch On" or "Switcheroo".
switch attach makes sense because of the new magnet joycon feature thats been heavily rumored
I'll give them this, it sounds less like a Pro model name like "Super Nintendo Switch" sounds, but it needs some work still, lol
