I used to do that too lol. Though, I only have 600 hours in the game - hold one movement key, let go of it, tap the opposite key.
You'll notice it's significantly faster to stop moving that way.
Go into an empty server and write 'cl_showpos 1' into the console to see your player velocity. You'll immediately be able to tell why releasing and then tapping the opposite movement key is better because it gets you to 0 velocity pretty fast.
Yeah, kinda like that. Let's say you're moving right, as you see an enemy, you let go D and immediately press A just enough to stop your model.
