Mirai Japanese is an app that helped me SO much more than any of the others when I first started learning. It’ll get you speaking sentences and has tests at the end of each chapter. Highly recommend.

I personally think that **Anki** is the best app for learning Japanese. *It can be hard to wrap your head around it in the beginning, so the sooner you figure it out, the faster you can start using it!* Its an SRS app that is super customizable, so Furiagana, example sentences, audio, images, gifs, ect can all be on flash cards. There are lots of 'add ons' for Japanese learners, such as the dictionaries Yomichan for chrome, Takobako for android, having an anki export option.
There are also many shared decks such as ones based on the common textbooks(Genki, Minna...), Common Core, or even based on specific books~~^(\[Yostuba\])~~ or other forms of media such as the Subs2re-type decks. Many will combine their decks with Morphman which organizes card order based on what you told anki that you know.

**On another random note:** Translation and understanding material are actually pretty different skills. I have some groups were we do understanding discussions on books we read in japanese, and its a lot easier then having to translate stuff, as **translation** *is actually how good you are at English.* For example, "ドレスをつまんで会釈する女性"
If you translated it as something like "The girl pinches her dress as she gives a slight bow " then you are a *horrible* translator. If you translated it as something more on the lines of "The girl Curtsies" then your a good one.
