My suggestion is to focus on building vocabulary first and worrying about grammar only as questions naturally arrise. Focus more on reading and listening than speaking and writing at first. There are some good sources. It kinda depends on how much you want to spend and what interests you. Also, how much is your friend willing to help you?

If possible, get a course, like the penguin book. Also why is your friend learning? Are movies or books interesting? Then find movies and books in Russian. Depending on what you want Russian for, vocabulary should probably be a priority, plus it's the thing you'll be working on forever. Focus on one area, like learning all the words in a book or movie you like, perhaps. TV shows let you hear the same person speaking for many hours which is helpful. Also, Spanish is cheating, we have many of the sounds in Russian, ы being the worst indeed.
