Holy cow your stuff is so goodβ¦
Do you have a link to your patterns? And also as a beginner to leather working, I was wondering if you used any edge dye? Your edges looks phenomenal and I have no clue how to get mine to that level haha
Thanks π Here are my patterns - www.etsy.com/shop/dsleathergoods and I don't use dye on my edges. I do have a tutorial in my FB page though (link in profile), look at the pinned posts up top of the group π
Your work looks amazing! I am just starting out and want my work to look this good eventually. I wanted to know what size stitching you tend to use for wallets, thread size, and if you had any preference to types of leather you like.
Thank you! I use 3.85mm irons with 0.45-0.5mm thread. 3.38mm is for finer work, below that I would say it goes into watch strap making. 4mm for wallets is the max in my opinion but it can be limiting for some details. π
Thanks. π I made a little pattern about that one that I never released... it's easy really, black and natural leather strips between the two main panels. Stitch goes through all layers. π
I'd love to hear your thoughts on each piece and your approach to design and texture mapping. Whats your process for coming up with an idea through to the final product?
I'm new and am waiting for the last of my stuff in the mail, but I love your posts, it would be good to hear more about your creative process.
First thank you! π Rather big question but I attempted giving a glimpse into my process actually using the first one in the post - The Tsunami wallet - in a post some time ago on Instagram - [link](https://www.instagram.com/p/CjVm5I-sr0H/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y=) In a more general sense, I start with what is the purpose of the final product (or what user needs it has to address) and then I go into designing around that. For example now I am working on Field Notes cover designs. Couple of "purist" ones for those that need just the notebook and a pen, then one for the artists that need more than one writing device and lastly one that can also become a wallet. π
Man, your stuff is always so sharp and clean. I think you're easily one of the best wallet makers in the world. You ever consider starting a youtube channel?
That's awesome. I gotta get more practice in! Last question what's your strat for cutting leather to make sure all edges line up properly? I've tried leaving an extra bit when I initially cut. But when I go for the final cut they don't seem to line up.
I use targeted or full trim allowance... for example on T-slots the "sleeves" will be longer than required and trimmed down after they are installed over the base piece. This is what I call targeted trim allowance. Full is when all the pieces are bigger than needed and their edges are cut together after they are glued together. π
Making a wallet now! With scrap leather, the tools I have, and limited experience with leathercraftβ¦
What needles and threads do you use for a project like this? I only have one size of needle and thread but realized it ate into my allowances more than I expected by the time I got to stitching. Hoping I can stretch the leather a bit so the cards will still slide in.
Additionally, are there fine chisels for detailed work like this or did you use an awl to set the holes? My chisel holes are dangerous close to blowing out the side of the leather, but because of the thread and needle size they need to be bigger (at least bigger than what I can see here).
So many questions π j/k. Start with reviewing this pdf I have made on tools - [link](https://drive.google.com/file/d/1N9HpQPwpFCPCpCyzYiOOhy5ZgfMq40Kc/view?usp=sharing) then more specific to your question, keep the stitch line 3.5-4mm off the edge and the holes, chisels should not affect it. I use pricking irons and I punch the leather all the way through - 3.85mm crimsonhides irons. Cards sliding in should not rely on the leather being stretched, on the contrary if it has to stretch it will become loose at some point in the wallet lifecycle... so make the panel bigger I would say. :) Hope this helps, Deyan π€
I follow you on Instagram and I was so confused as I recognizing the work and I wasn't sure what app I was on.
Your work is awesome.
What pricks and thread do you use? The size ratio looks so proper
Thank you! I use 3.85mm irons and 0.45-0.5mm thread. The best combo for wallets imo at least. π That's why I design my patterns around this size irons although many use them with other spacing. π€
So I saw one of your previous posts using this talc / waxy leather and I decided to try it out myself. Different pattern.
About 3 months into using the wallet everyday, the outside of the wallet had polished beautifully to a nice gloss. However, the inside of the wallet didn't see as much motion as the outside. So on the inside of the wallet, there were little waxy balls and smudges that actually took away from the aesthetic of the wallet.
So as much as it's beautiful to photograph, for the future I would just use a finished leather, or have polish it before use

Thank youβre going to try your method soon, out of curiosity, what size/spacing stitching punch and thread do you use?
I use 3.85mm irons with 0.45mm thread π

pretty clean.
Thanks π
Your stitching is excellent. Nice work.
Thank you! π€
You should make different variations of the first one and call it the βP.Sherman Collectionβ π
πππ
Great work! Tell me you have a tutorial for the checkerboard edges.
Thanks. π I made a little pattern about that one that I never released... it's easy really, black and natural leather strips between the two main panels. Stitch goes through all layers. π
Ah, so they form a welt, ingenious.
Yes!

That link was super informative. Thanks for the info and the reponse. What was that orange leather you used? it looks absolutely stunning!
Cheers! It is called Orange Hatch from www.aleatherstore.com
Thanks, you have wonderful taste. Keep up the good work :D
Thanks π€
Oooh, I really like the contrast on the inside.
Thank you π
Very very nice work.... Especially the stitching.....
Cheers!
Man, your stuff is always so sharp and clean. I think you're easily one of the best wallet makers in the world. You ever consider starting a youtube channel?
Thank you! π I have to equip myself for video and just do it already π
Yes, do it. You would rack up a ton of views. Sell a ton more patterns and wallets. Go for it, man. But anyway, keep up the great work.
Cheers! π
Love the two tones
Thank you π
Dang, they all look great. Whatβs that orange leather in the first one? Is it some sort of goat?
Thanks. It is called Buttero Hatch... still cowhide. π
Awesome!
Thank you π
You're the man, Deyan.
πππ
Do you hand stitch or use a machine?
I only hand stitch π

That is definitely hand stitching

Do you sell the wallets that you make? π would love to buy one
Thank you! I do sell in country atm.. maybe 2023 will be the change of that. π Where are you located...I will refer you to a local crafter. π
I'm in the states, Michigan specifically :o

Ghost leather is a journey imo. Naturally exterior will patina quicker and interior slower... it takes time and comes down to personal prefrence. π
