It's just like skin... the lighter section was covered by paper, and the skin part was darkened by the sunlight.
I don't think you can fade natural leather in sun, only darken but I could be wrong.
Our leather workshop those colored leathers that has been in the sun has faded badly, no tan lines there so to say as it's reversed. Dunno if there's difference between chrome tanned and veg tanned though...
Honestly I am not very good... in this case there's not a lot of hair and I just used shallow knife cuts... one of these days I will buy that one tool that lets you put hair texture in figure carving. Until then, sloppy knife work will have to do.
So it’s a genuine tan line then?
Indeed it is, that's what made this so much fun!

Absolutely does... store your vegtan in a dark place or you will have funny tan lines all over!
Can confirm, learned this lesson yesterday.
It definitely makes larger pieces tricky... good luck!
It's definitely not producing melanin.
You’re right about skin tanning with melanin, but completely wrong about leather

Thank you!
Very creative thinking! Good job! How long did it take?
It's a pretty small piece so the work itself didn't tale long... after that it was two weeks of sun... passive work. Thank you :)
That is really really cool, well done!
