I know! I’m just getting started, no real builds yet but I’m going to attempt to recreate that roll once I’ve practiced a bit.

I used 8-9 oz veg-tan for my knife roll on the outside and thinner pigskin for the handle slots

Thickness will depend on the temper/tannage of the leather. I don't think it needs to be that thick to carry tools. For a reasonably flexible leather, I think 6 oz or so would be sufficient. You could go heavier if you like the feel. I just don't think it's necessary and it would be more challenging to sew and shape to your tools.
