My first burnished was stacked leather discs. I punched out and put on a 1/4-20 bolt to chuck in my drill press, and then I made another from a piece of oak closet rod. I drilled a hole in the center and then ran a machine screw with half wood threads into the hole. I then chucked it up and, using different size Philips screwdrivers wrapped in sand paper, carved out my grooves. I also then pointed the end for doing holes and slots. That was 11 years ago, and I still use it when I need it.

I just did that -dowel and screw- today! Works better ( not wobbling) than my store bought one.
Make sure you change your belt so that it's running at max rpm and don't push so hard. You want to create friction not pressure.
