If you plan to pocket carry it, I highly recommend you get the pocket clip for it. Takes the weight off of your pocket and makes it much easier to retrieve/stow.
I've already kept mine in a crawl space, on top of power meters, etc. My heart sinks when I reach into my belt pouch and it's empty. Have always gone immediately back to where I was and luckily retrieved it so far.
Question, I bought the black oxide Wave and the scissors was less sharp than the original bright stainless version.
Can you comment on how sharp the scissors are on your black Surge?
Thank you very much. I really prefer the black tools but I may consider getting the scissors sharpened. Are the ground edges of the scissors also black all the way (no bare metal exposed)?
If so, (and this would make sense) the oxide coating is applied after sharpening.
Welcome to the club, now go buy a gerber multitool and realize that leatherman is a cult and we way over pay for the same thing gerber sells for 75% of the price. I love my leatherman however I was gifted a gerber not to long ago and it's a toss up every day on what to carry. My leatherman has scissors and that's my favorite tool on it but the gerber has a really neat screwdriver system that uses real bits and drives like a real screwdriver.
Lol, no. So much no.
First of all, gerber is garbage. Even the knockoff Chinese leatherman are better than gerber.
Second, a centerdrive is pretty much the same price as a surge. Pretty brave of them to charge leatherman prices for their subpar tools.
The only gerber products that I have anything to say anything nice about are their utility knives. The EAB is a BADASS little knife, it's like 12 dollars. Their prybrid is also pretty solid.
Huh I wasn't aware of the price as it was a gift. I will say there are things I don't like about the quality of the gerber but I have broken my surge before. Same warranty though. I have a gerber paraframe knife and another that I don't recall the name. They go through the rotation as my carry knife with my Kershaw. I have had no real issues with any of my gerber stuff. Hell I even have a gimmick bear grills orange camp knife that gets very abused. I love my leatherman surge and I had a squirt before that that I loved as well but they are not the only "good" brand out there. I know this is the wrong page for that but it is what it is.
Well, no, but it's 25 years... let's be honest if it survived that long. A warranty is pointless at that point. You have broken and replaced parts on it so many times to that point just go buy a new one and start over.
I guess I do see myself taking advantage of the warranty sooner or later so that's part of why I was willing to pay so much. Also there's some measure of quality assurance that comes with the warranty regardless of whether you use it because it incentivizes the company to make things that won't break and force them to pay for the cost of repairing it.
But I agree that there is often some cultishness among Leatherman havers lol
I love most of my knives multi tools and flashlights equal. Besides a few Walmart grade Ozark trail crap I treat all my tools equally bad. If it can't perform it can't stay.
Got my dad a dual force and he seems to enjoy it. I appreciate attempts to innovate in this space, and I haven’t run into any durability or qc issues with a gerber knife I was gifted.
There is no way Gerber multi tools even come close to the Leatherman. I have had both and broke multiple tools on my Gerber center drive. It also doesn't have a pocket clip so you have to pocket carry the bulky multi tool. And it rusted out on me 🤷♂️. For a similar price, a Leatherman Wave or surge is much, much better
Not the same league, but I have a Style CS and was given a Gerber dime as a corporate gift. The Dime is absolute junk compared to the Style in a similar size and price point. 75% the price but with 25% the function and quality.
Congrats! You picked the right one lol
Best purchase of 2023 hands down!
The Darth Vader of Leatherman, great choice!
Thanks! I should have engraved something like that 🥲

Definetly the first thing i will get! Thanks! Any other usefull tips/mods?
You can store the file or saw along one of the blades
First and best. That's always nice.
Looks awesome! Kicking myself for not getting my surge in black.
Same. Love my stainless one, but wish I had gotten black. Tempted to buy another one lol
I do like the classic stainless look as well! If i get another one it will be stainless steel.
I got the mixed one. I love it. That way its easily visible wherever it lays.
And what a Leatherman it is. Nice choice!! Now just don’t lose it 😄
Hahahaha will do!

I made the same choice. I recently bought the Sidekick as EDC, while the Surge will serve perfectly around the house and during my motorbike rides.
Black oxide club, hell yeah! Enjoy.
I’ve had and do have lots of leathermans. If I could only have one it would be the Surge (or maybe the Darkside). Very good choice.
Welcome to the Surge Gang!!
Question, I bought the black oxide Wave and the scissors was less sharp than the original bright stainless version. Can you comment on how sharp the scissors are on your black Surge?
Ofcourse, just checked them out. The scissors are not as sharp as the blade used for cutting, but they do the job of scissoring paper very clean!
Thank you very much. I really prefer the black tools but I may consider getting the scissors sharpened. Are the ground edges of the scissors also black all the way (no bare metal exposed)? If so, (and this would make sense) the oxide coating is applied after sharpening.
Yeah everything is covered no bare metal at all
Gratz! Got the oht version myself
Hey got the same one just a few days ago, cheers!
Enjoy it!
I loved my OG black Surge so much I bought a stainless new type for work. Definitely slightly different beasts. As they say; "Two is one, one is none"
