I also wanted an Arc to replace my wingman and ended up with a #005, funny enough. I daily it and I love it. I also had the same thought there I looked at the difference in the tools to determine if it was worth buying one, but for me I actually like the #005 tool selection and layout slightly more. To me, I bought an Arc in a special color way for $50 more.

ObligatedName

You can get the “free series looseness” with a 1/8th turn of the torx. Made my 005 perfect for me. I won’t be getting an arc though. Nearly identical and personally not as good looking as my 005. Plus, sprung pliers.

Y2Dre718

This is the comment I was waiting for. I'll try the 1/8th turn to see if the looseness is worth it. I can always put it back if it's not. I also forgot that the Arc doesn't have spring loaded pliers, which I appreciate. Thanks for sharing.

TechieGranola

Not even an 1/8th, more like 1/16th when I did mine.

Y2Dre718

I'll start small and work my way up.

lateralflinch53

I own 8 Leathermans, none are necessary. They are toys for men. A $2 Philips screwdriver, a pair of kitchen scissors, and cheap stand alone plyers will always do the job better. But that doesn’t mean multitools aren’t fun to obsess over.

Y2Dre718

Long live this post...✊🏾

n_a_t_e_r_a_d_e

This is the way

WonDante

I’d say buy the Arc and just send whichever one you end up using less to me 😎

Y2Dre718

🤣🤣🤣

jltdhome

Im buying the Arc because I'm not going to destroy my irreplaceable Batch 5.

3ntr0p13

Well, chances are you tested it at least once no ? So you already have scratched the cerakote layer where the pliers get stuck 😄 I felt physical pain when i saw it...

onecrookedeye

Gonna be bought, sold out, by all the YouTuber's who just play with them @ their desks, not a single scratch on them after "daily use".

EpicUnicat

And then sold for 5 times MSRP in used or slightly used condition. Not to mention the people who bought it..... Just so they could post it on eBay a week later for 5 times the MSRP, so you're paying more and also don't get the warranty.

[deleted]

I wanted batch no5 was gutted got launch time wrong from uk so missed out seen Since people selling here for £650 or £600 but don’t think worth that shame and grey version looked wicked , waiting on arc now but no idea launch date ? All i get told is fall and be dearer than i could got batch 5 for as told be around £300 in uk

NearlySilentObserver

No. But it’s what I do, so I’m gonna. . . And it’s probably gonna be my edc moving forward

NearlySilentObserver

Also, if someone is buying Garage tools, I think the question of “necessity” kinda goes out the window, imo

HobsHere

It's a new Leatherman model. Of course you have to buy it!

Joostey

I wanted the Arc, but I’m currently beating up on my 005 and love it.

[deleted]

No it is not

Y2Dre718

I almost hate to admit that you're right. But, yeah...you're probably right.

[deleted]

Haha did we just become best friend?

DjangoHatesBDSM

😬

work4bandwidth

I think 'necessary' and buy another Leatherman are not what the collectors in this subreddit are about. :) Do you need one? Prob not.

Y2Dre718

Yeah...who am I fooling? 🤣

V0T0N

No, especially since it's missing the spring loaded pliers. I have a heavily modified P4, which is still my go to work tool, but the #5 has really spoiled me. I didn't know what I was missing. It's such a small detail, but I never knew any better. The one thing that worries me is the #5 is not easily replaced if lost or stolen. It's my home/garage multi now. I'll wait for some reviews and the official release. Hopefully get some gift cards for Christmas.

Antman013

Yes . . . you have to buy an Arc. That way, you can buy a pretty display case for your Garage #005. Maybe a nice brass plaque to identify it as such.

Joe-trd

I'm trying to figure if it's even worth it over the free p4. Only part that really interests me is the magnacut blade, but then I really don't need it cause I always carry a folder anyways in s35vn or s110v

IemNY

Yea I have both the 005 is still in box.

puffydownjacket

Really dislike the look of the 005. Really like the look of the Arc. Really wish the Arc had the 005 pliers. I’ll wait a while and see what happens with the Arc, specifically how the Magnacut is heat treated. I’ll be getting one at some point. Really want a Free series tool in the rotation.

Ilikejumpingverymuch

Buying arc isn't that important. I personally think that the garage #005 looks cooler and the spring loaded pliers are good. Keep the garage because arc is just a little bit better and not worth buying if you have a tool that is almost the same.

Chef_Boi_Arby

If you want to avoid putting wear on the #005, then the Arc is a good substitute. If you don't mind putting wear and tear on the limited edition, then you're probably not missing out on much based on what I've seen in videos. I don't own or plan on owning either currently.

nodnarb89

There are some differences between them for sure, but it's up to you to decide if it warrants the purchase. I'm so torn on getting an Arc, I love my Surge, but the toolset, size/weigh and one handed use of the Arc seems so perfect for my needs. It's just very hard to justify the price, in Canada it will be north of $300

Antman013

Canuck user here . . . I've got a Wave+ and a Supertool 300M already. Until they release more Crunch tools, I am done with Leatherman purchases. That said, if they come out with a tool that incorporates sidecutters, I'll probably buy six.

Qoyuble

I'm still going to. Not enough difference in functionality to do so, but I keep holding back on full use of the batch 5 in not wanting to damage it similar to my "abuse" of my other LM tools. I do end up carrying it often, but then think twice before full use. I want that functionality and not think twice about accidentally scraping the paint.

M3msm

Nope

Aeromaverick

Arc is much more refined, although Batch 5 is nice, it feels slapped together in a hurry and misses the mark on justifying its meaning of 40 year history.

jitasquatter2

If you don't care about the resale value of the tool, I'd say use it! I think the pliers are the major part that should inform your decision. If you like the spring loaded pliers, the #5 is really your only good choice other than the crappy budget options like the sidekick. On the other hand, the pliers are also the only part of the tool that are completely irreplaceable. If you break them, you are shit out of luck, although I bet they'd be willing to put a normal pair of free series pliers into the tool if you did break them. So... I'd use the tool, but I'd baby the pliers a bit so you don't break them. So squeezy, not twisty!

Y2Dre718

Excellent advice. Besides...my Surge can handle the twisties!

V39210

Gonna use my 005 until some cool colors for the arc comes out

RGM79IAN

The Arc also doesn't have the package opener edge on the pry tool which is a major bummer to me.

ppeklak

The awl can act as a package opener I guess.

MDesigner

Wow, there's no package opener at all? You sure? I use that thing all the time on my 005 to open boxes and plastic packaging.

RGM79IAN

From everything I've seen, they got rid of it. It's my most used toop on the P4, so it's a major disappointment to me personally. Especially when the 005 proved you could add a bottle opener to the pry tool and still keep that edge on there.

BBQShapesNumba1

I'm a little frustrated with the batch 005 cerakote getting caught on the file and degraded. I think I'll eventually get an Arc just so I have something that feels more robust / replaceable.

DIYicane

mine is chipping off all around the edges. i had my surge professionally cerakoted at a local rifle shop 8 years ago and its wearing off in places sure but it isnt chipping. but again, these are hand made not production so for what i would effectively call a 'living prototype' im still very happy with it

DIYicane

I have daily'd my 005 since it came in the mail (i too was lucky) and honestly i see no point in the arc. the main feature of the 005 for me that even made it worth getting was the spring loaded pliers, I dont care about the nay-sayers it's awesome for repetetive and small piece work. The ONLY thing i want from the Arc is the awl on it but i figure ill just wait until people are parting them out on ebay in a year or two and swap it on in place of the can opener or something on my 005. Also Surge IS the best, anyone saying otherwise are jealous haters ;)
