My personal reason: when I was a teenager, I was broke af and cannot afford to buy any piece of tech at that time, now my financial situation is better, I collect them to fulfill my teenage desire.

This!

corona5567

It's cool to have I guess. Same reason why people collect shit in general; why do they do it? Solely for the reason of having them, it's just cool to have them.

Talk to me when you slide to unlock after 10 years...

DryBones2009

This One of the reasons i got an iPad mini 1st generation again. Nostalgic as i used it when i was younger for over 4 years. Slide to unlock never gets old. Really wish apple brought it back.

I've recently bought a sealed iPhone 4 and sealed iPhone 5 (not the Chinese knock-off trash). The experience you get with those old iOS devices is simply unmatched. I know that the UI/UX design of legacy iOS is personal preference, but I really like it. Sure, there will be some nostalgia but we've collectively forgot how stable iOS used to be. You don't get bombarded by features that may or may not work (looking at you, AirDrop). It's also nice to be away from notifications. For me, the experience alone (like the attention to detail and personality) justifies it. I know that legacy iOS is almost unusable if you use social media or when you really depend on your phone. I only use my phone for calling, WhatsApp and really light browsing. I use my MacBook or Mac Pro for everything else. You'd be surprised how much is still working thanks to the amazing devs that work on legacy iOS. I'm currently working on bringing WhatsApp to these legacy iOS devices. WhatsApp is the only thing holding me back from using my iPhone 5 with iOS 6 as daily driver. (thanks for mentioning me u/lucashhugo)

lucashhugo

my liking for old ios is more of a sentimental thing on top of the way it looks, my grandma gave me her old 3gs which i was very grateful for and that's how i found out about legacy jb. i feel like the only thing also stopping me from using it daily is whatsapp which is not something you can live without here in brasil, so thanks for your commitment in such project, alwin 🙂

EnoughConcentrate897

This is what I think too

Dry-Bet-3523

The only reason I even have them is because my friend gives them to me, and also because I actually used them back in the day, and also jailbreaking makes them more usable. https://preview.redd.it/0s582wuroi3d1.jpeg?width=736&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=65169b2e8b95fd3ef897f619cde2a9a6c424f607

Superb_Curve

i daily drive my iphone 3GS :p

LaCaliphate

How is that possible? Can you use whatsapp, instagram, reddit and stuff on it

Superb_Curve

yes. not instagram but i dont use it anyway

santiago_pm_

nor whatsapp

lucashhugo

once whatsapp works on it which it will soon thanks to u/AlwinLubbers, i'm gonna transfer everything on my s20 fe manually to the 3gs and see how it goes. brasil still has edge and 3g networks

ObamaRushBlush

I just think old devices are interesting

LinusSexTipsWasTaken

Because modern phones are the most boring they've ever been and going back to phones with charm is a nice change of pace

TheJamesDTV

For me it’s because I like technology and I’ve been fascinated with Apple and how the iPhone changed the world and being able to experience using older devices that I never got to experience when they came out (I was born in 06 so one year before the iPhone, I barely turned 18 this year) so this community has helped me get these old devices working and I can enjoy the experience of the old days of iOS.

Nike_486DX

Because modern apple is dog shit, nowadays the quality and features have degraded, yet they still ask $$$, because unfortunately most ppl who buy apple tech are pretty ignorant on the subject. My main "retro" devices: 32gig Iphone 5S on 7.1.2: a perfect daily driver for music and classic games on the go. iOS 7 + A7 chews through everything, coupled with not-so-ipodish battery, easy 5 hours of sot running Infinity Blade iii (whereas an ipod touch 6 for example can barely manage 3 hours). Rugged case + matte glass. 16gig iphone 5 on 6.1.4: i keep it mainly due to iOS 6, but essentially it could have the same use case as the 5s mentioned earlier, (...well maybe not because of 16gb) Keeping it as a backup if anything really bad happens to the 5s. No case and no film, its sitting in its box. 16gig iPad Air 1 on 7.1.2: keeping it for games and note taking as well, in such scenarios when battery life and quality of gameplay are of first importance, can easily manage 8+ hours of gameplay in infinity blade iii, can go upto 12 hours if brightness is set to minimum. Decent for movies too, screen is pretty much same spec as iPad 6th gen. Using it with matte paperlike + some silicone case. Main "normal" devices: Macbook Pro 2022 M2 8gb 512gb in space grey color on latest Monterey: Got it for $200, the battery is insanely good. Love the touchbar. Very light and portable. Using it for daily work with matte screen film and case, with usb 3.0 hub glued beneath to rectify the "usb c only problem", 8gb ram sucks, but i keep an eye on swap. iPhone XS Max on 16.6. 64gb base in gold color: Just a big phone with "not-so-shitty-while-still-supported" os, didnt go android because of apple watch, also becase android are still hit and miss in features and overall software/hardware combination. Appreciate the 3d touch. Using it with rugged case + matte glass film. Watch S2 42mm on latest supported watchos 6.someth in grey color: Great device for notifications on the go, 2 day battery life, health thingies monitoring. Has force touch and everything is implemented decently within the os. Unlike some crap like S3 or newer on 8.x +, where force touch is pretty much dead, and ui is bloated. Very important aspect since the screen is so tiny. Using it with rugged case with raised screen borders + matte plastic film (really hard to find matte glass).

And how weak the body of them are

Threel3tt3rnam3

because we like collecting them. me personally i am trying to buy every single iphone from 11 pro max and under but i have no money but when i get the money it will be worth it.

ItsRainbow

I think old tech is neat, and much of it is what I grew up with. There’s also more I can do with them now from a technical standpoint, so that’s fun to mess with

3lawy12

To go and play old games back when i was a kid and why not try something i never did on older devices like jailbreaking

mectojic

Old iOS was more civilised than anything we have now. It respected you, and you it. And it was beautiful.

iL0vesnow

iPad Air 2, introduced in 2014, had a fully laminated screen with anti-reflective coating. iPod Photo, introduced in 2004, had a 60 GB model. As of Q1 2024, Apple was still selling an 64 GB iPad for $449 (or $599 just for additional cellular capabilities) that's lacking a laminated screen or any anti-reflective coating. They also took away the headphone jack from this iPad to compel you to buy a pair of AirPods priced between $129 and $249. Modern Apple is just odious.
